The Quidell Brothers started as a way for me to push my writing boundaries. I am, at my core, a writer of high-intensity speculative fiction: My stories usually buzz with Fates and dragons, witches and shifters, spaceships and pulse-pounding time travel. I write tales of good people fighting the apocalyptic ends of multiple worlds and, for me, the erotic love scenes and daily life battles of the Quidell family represented a way to grow beyond my “familiar.”
Turned out that I fell in love with the kind of storytelling the Quidells offered.
In Thomas’s Need, Tom and Sammie explore what it means to live—and to face death—as a family.
In 2017, join me as I explore the stories of the men on the periphery of the Quidell family—Andy, Jason, Mack, Remy, and Juri—with Andrew’s Kiss, and later in 2017, and a return to Dan and Camille with Daniel’s Vows.
Topic:
Question One: Will you be continuing the Quidell Brothers series?
Yes. Next up is “Andrew’s Kiss” which I will start once I’m done with Fate – Fire – Shifter – Dragon book 7, “The Burning World”. After that will be “Daniel’s Vows” and maybe “Mack’s Wish” and a Remy story. I keep saying that I’m going to stop writing contemporaries and focus on the SF but I love the Quidell family and I’m a glutton for punishment. Besides, I can’t stop until I write Bart’s story. I think that’s mandatory at this point.
Question Two: How does writing contemporaries differ from writing science fiction?
It’s not all that different, to be honest. Every story consists of characters in a setting with problems. The key is to draw fully three-dimensional people within an internally-consistent universe, and I think this is what gives my tales a more literary feel. The contemporaries are a little easier in that I need to do less world-building, but the Quidell universe is still a “built” place. It’s cleaner and more dramatic than the real world.
About Kris Austen Radcliffe:
Kris’s contemporary romance series, The Quidell Brothers, brings her descriptive touch to the real world. Her fantasy and futuristic romance series, Fate – Fire – Shifter – Dragon, sets it free in the fantastic. She’s traversed many storytelling worlds—dabbles in film and comic books, time as a talent agent and a textbook photo coordinator, as well as a foray into nonfiction. But she craved narrative and richly-textured worlds—and unexpected, true love.
Kris lives in Minnesota with her husband, two daughters, and Handsome Cat.
