Ross MacDougal demands vengeance on the men who killed his young cousin, but his Clan Chief, older half-brother Gillis, insists that he produce an heir. Without one, they’ll lose their ranch to their brutish brother in Texas when their father dies. But no woman would marry the man known as the MacDougal Devil. An Eastern contract bride is the only way to save the ranch.

Amelia Smathers is desperate for her own home. Before dying of lung complications, her older sister Prudence insists that Amelia marry Nevin MacDougal, her husband Gillis’s kindly younger brother. Eyes tearing in grief, Amelia signs the marriage contract and heads west.

Amelia is shocked to discover a different husband, but Ross’s erotic touch soothes her. Still, she’s expected to share herself, just like Beth Elliott, their closest neighbor. Beth’s heated description of sharing three men has Amelia both alarmed and aroused. Then Ross’s past catches up with them...

My Review:

Butler took me back in time with quite the adventure in this tale. Not only is this a highly erotic tale that kind of makes me wish that I’d lived in the Montana Territory, but Butler also weaves an intricate plot of life, love, and family that is so heartfelt that I couldn’t help but fall for the characters. She also made me cry as she broke my heart. This tale was very emotionally compelling.

I enjoyed the differences between the different relationships within this less than traditional marriage. The emotions involved and even the way that they treated each other were all apparent; all the while the whole came together in a seamless manner.

Amelia’s sheer naiveté and curiosity were charming. She was such an endearing character. She was the perfect counterpoint to the three other, very distinct, personalities that we get up close and personal with. Each tugged at my heart in their own way, yet all four came together in a unique manner that suited them.

Butler has created something that is sizzling hot, yet that portrays the real emotions of the characters and that easily takes you back in time. I had a blast reading it.

Back Cover Blurb:

Having completed two years at a Virginia ladies’ college, required to gain her inheritance, Jessamine Elliott returns to Tanner’s Ford. Raised on a ranch with six wild brothers, she’s determined to keep her independence by becoming a partner on her brothers’ Bitterroot Ranch. But Ranger insists she prove herself by spending three weeks working for the Double Diamond, owned by a trio of greenhorn English aristocrats, posing as a boy.

At Ranger’s urging, Kenrick ‘Ace’ Langford reluctantly takes Jessie on, thinking she’s a bratty boy but needing the skills. His partners see through Jessie’s disguise but go along with the ruse, hoping they will marry. Ace feels strangely drawn to Jessie so stays far away. Three weeks later he thinks he’s finally free of the brat when he finds Jessie floating in his hot spring. When the uppity brat rolls over, showing lush breasts, Ace decides it’s payback time.

My Review:

What a rush! Combine the Montana territory and all its trials and tribulations with a cast of characters that I couldn’t get enough of and Butler has created a winning story here. Not only does the setting and scene come to life, but the entire story seemed so real. Yes, it was hot and Butler did a fantastic job of showing the dynamics of the relationship, but it was so much more than that as well. I felt as if I were part of these characters’ lives for a little while.

The Jessie/Ace dynamic in this story was priceless. Both of them trying to fit the other into preconceived moulds that just don’t apply made for some comical and very tense moments. Sin’s unending mirth stood at odds with his imposing persona. Henry as a painter was a fantastic twist to the rugged cast of this story (and of the series as a whole). I truly loved how each of these three men stood out so differently, yet how close friends they are. This is a family unit that you can really see enduring in the long run. I enjoy how Butler expands her cast to include those that we met in past stories, as well as other individuals that I hope to get closer to later.

This is so much more than just a novel that will leave you all hot and bothered (and trust me, if you enjoy the genre at all, it will). Butler combines romance with suspense, erotic moments with real live ranching in such a manner that you really get a sense of the big picture in these lives so far removed from the ones we live today, yet during a time that was essential to bringing about the world as we know it.
