Interview with author S.B. Boughton

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sure! My name is SB Boughton and I am the author of Wiley’s Grocery. I used to work at a grocery store, but none of the events in the book are based off of my own experiences. I was trying to right something wacky and far-fetched, if that makes sense.

Q ~ What’s something that you never leave home without?
I never leave home without my wallet. You never know what cool things are out there to buy. It’s a Marvel one with a collage of comic book covers.

Q ~ What’s one habit that you have that you’d like to break?
Procrastinating. I think there are a lot of fun things to do in the world. My short attention span leads me to my Facebook account, sadly.

Q ~ If you were stuck in a dingy floating in the middle of the ocean, who and what would you want with you and why?
For who, I think I’d pick my buddy, Trent. We’ve been friends since 5th grade, and our conversations are always pretty fun. For what I would bring, I’m going to go with my favorite snack, Wild Cherry Pepsi with Hot N Spicy Cheez-its. I love those! If I’m going to die in the ocean, I want to at least have a good meal first.

Q ~ Are you a dog person, a cat person, or does some other critter strike your fancy?
I’m allergic to cats so I have to be a dog person by default. I grew up with a beagle. She was a great friend of mine.

Q ~ Are there any new Authors that have grasped your interest recently and why?
New authors? That’s a good question. I think for newer people, it can be hard to get established. I know that personally. But I would say Regan Claire who wrote the Gathering Water series. It’s not for me personally. I really just respect how popular it appears to be on Amazon. Pretty impressive, in my opinion.

Q ~ How did you begin writing? Was there a single catalyst or a series of events?
I don’t know if there was a single series. I think my issue is the fact I daydream too often, and I needed some sort of vehicle to get that out.

Q ~ What’s the best thing that’s happened since you began writing? The worst?
I would say the best thing is when you have friends who appeared to enjoy it. That’s what is most important, I think. Getting a product out there that people enjoy is what I mainly do. I guess the worst is when people tend to misinterpret the book. I don’t mind if someone dislikes it. When they don’t quite understand the concept, then I kind of feel like I failed in a way.

Q ~ What are your biggest influences in life? Who are your biggest supporters?
Influences, oh man. That’s a tough one that I’m not really sure about. I’m sure my surroundings have influenced me somehow, but in ways I don’t know. For supporters, I’d like to thank my Facebook friends. A lot of them really gave me a shot. Whether they liked it or not, is a different story.

Q ~ When you write, do you lay out a solid outline before beginning, or start writing and iron out the kinks later?

Not a solid outline. I have a general idea of a start, middle, and end. Once the story progresses, I realized things aren’t supposed to turn out the way I thought they would.

Q ~ Can you tell us a little bit about your latest release?
Yep! I wrote Wiley’s Grocery back in March and it started out as a short story in one of my creative writing classes. I tried to make something as weird and bizarre as possible. I was kind of going for a soap opera feel. Some of the reviews try to make it seem like a realistic retail environment. That definitely confused me a bit.

Q ~ What music did you listen to while writing?
I actually cannot listen to music while writing. I would have even more typos than I already do if I did that. Sorry!

Q ~ What is your favourite part or scene in the novel?
In the book, the fourth story is called, “The Bladder.” I was trying to write something funny. Weirdly enough, if anybody gives me feedback positive or negative about the book, they never bring that one up. It’s odd. They usually like to talk about the second story called, “The Hostel.” Some enjoy it, and some really really do not enjoy it.

Q ~ Of the works you’ve written, which is your favourite? Is there also a character that holds a special place in your heart?
Actually, looking at the last question I think I can elaborate more on this. “The Bladder” is my favorite, but my favorite character is probably The Stranger in “The Hostel.” He is really out of place in the grand scheme of the book, and that’s what I find unique and interesting about him.

Q ~ Do you have anything in the works at the moment? Care to give us a hint about it?
Right now I actually don’t. I’m still trying to come up with a new, original idea.

Q ~ If you could give aspiring authors one piece of advice, what would it be?
I don’t know if I’m the best person to ask since I’m still working at getting “good,” but I would say seek out friends for help. Try to find the ones that are the most knowledgeable and have the best ideas. You’d be surprised in how much they can help.
