Reeling from the loss of his wife during childbirth, Erik Muth must find a nursing mother for his newborn daughter to survive. For their children’s sake, Erik and Antonia wed, starting a new life together on his farm on the prairie. But it’s no easy union. Antonia misunderstands Erik’s quiet personality. He finds her independence disconcerting. Both hide secrets that challenge their growing intimacy.

When Indians steal livestock from farms around Sweetwater Springs to feed their starving tribe, the outraged townsfolk demand retaliation. Erik and Antonia must work together to prevent a massacre. Will a marriage forged in loss blossom into love?

My Review:

What a beautiful novel. Holland’s seamless writing combines with her picturesque descriptions to take you back in time to a time and place that are both simpler and much more difficult than the world we live in today. Holland takes off on a high point of suspense, albeit of an emotional sort, and that emotion stays with the reader throughout the novel. She brings to light the difficulties of the time in which her characters live, while also showcasing the best parts of this ‘simpler time’.

The characters in this novel are quite real & realistic. Their emotions seeped from the pages, drawing me to them. I felt for and with the main couple. Seeing them embrace their second chance at happiness after such devastating loss was fantastic. At the same time, the hardships that they faced broke my heart. Not only were the characters emotionally engaging, they were well developed and enjoyable characters that I really liked getting to know.

Once again Holland has charmed me with her eloquently put together novel. She presents a world in which I’d love to have lived while telling a tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those who enjoy historical romance that really represents the time period in question.
