Hard Ride to Dry Gulch by Joanna Wayne

Title:  Hard Ride to Dry Gulch
Series:  Big D Dads:  The Daltons #3
Author:  Joanna Wayne
Published:  July 1/14 by Mills & Boon Intrigue
Length:  240pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  romantic suspense
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:
★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A dedicated Detective risks his life to save a woman and her son in this spellbinding Big "D" Dads: The Daltons novel by Joanna Wayne.

A haunting beauty with mesmerizing brown eyes is in desperate need of Dallas homicide detective Travis Dalton's help. Faith Ashburn's troubled teenage son is missing…and may be hiding secrets that could get him—and his mother—killed.

Faith will do whatever it takes to find her boy, even if it means turning to the rugged detective, a man shadowed by his own painful past. When the search reveals a shocking connection to the dangerous criminal Travis has sworn to bring down, Faith has to trust him with her life. And when passion flares, she has to trust him with something she vowed never again to give: her heart.

My Review:

Wayne presents her audience with a well written novel with an artfully developed story. This story is not simply suspenseful, but dramatic as well. Wayne balances the story so that it seems not only possible but painfully real. I really appreciated the variety of ways in which the story was developed, and the fact that there were so many aspects to the story. She takes a very raw and real look at the relationship between mother and son, especially when outside forces have a hand in it.

I appreciated the glimpses into the pasts of both the main characters. It gives you insight as to why they approach events in a certain manner. Also, the fact that they are dealing with more than just the focus of the investigation at hand makes them seem so much more real. Present reality and their personal histories impinge on all aspects of this story. Honestly, my pet peeve with this novel is the female lead’s view of her son. She refuses to see her son as an individual able to function on his own, even at the age of 18, and routinely talks about him as if he were 5. I really found myself running hot and cold with the female lead. There were times when I loved her and other times when I found her to be quite obtuse. The steadfastness of the male lead’s character really balanced this out, as did the subject of the storyline.

As a whole this was an intensely riveting and suspenseful novel. It’s a brilliant read for all lovers of romantic suspense.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Jack is an FBI agent, a playboy, a man who is happy tasting the flavor of the month and not staying for breakfast. He’s perfectly content with his life and has no interest in finding his happily ever after. So when he is attracted to Kennedy at his partner’s wedding, he naturally takes the opportunity to seduce her. Now it’s time to focus on the next good-looking woman who comes along, right?

Ah, you don’t always get what you expect.

Kennedy was burned by her ex-husband—badly. She told everyone he cheated on her, because the truth—that he stole all of her money before disappearing out of her life—is far more embarrassing. For the last three years she’s struggled to pay off her debt, ignoring her libido and refusing to consider allowing another man to get close.

A one-night stand with Jack is the perfect way to break her sexual fast—until she discovers that he’s pouring her morning coffee and frying bacon.

While Jack goes undercover at a male strip club, the two begin an affair that distracts him from his job and puts their hearts—and Kennedy’s life—in danger. Now there’s only one way Jack can stop this killer, and it involves making that declaration they both swore they didn’t want.

My Review:

Lund had me right from the very first chapter. I was thoroughly captivated by this multifaceted story. And did Lund ever make me laugh. Some of the story twists caught me so off guard there was just no other option. This novel is suspenseful in a very fun-loving way. You are always on edge, wanting to know how the story will end, wondering who did it, but at the same time, it’s not the stuff that nightmares are made of. This novel is definitely well written and edited. Lund’s one-of-a-kind writing drew me to her work and kept me entranced throughout.

I loved the interactions between the characters in this novel. Not only do you get to know their personalities, but Lund makes it very easy to picture their physical person with her vivid descriptions. The main characters are intriguing. Watching them dance around each other was singularly captivating. I was also completely shocked by the antagonist. It was completely priceless.

Overall, this was a unique romantic suspense with a good dose of comedy. It was a great introduction to Lund’s work, and has definitely sparked me to read more.

My Kind of Crazy by Katie O'Sullivan

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Kendall Roarke is betting everything on making her Harwichport Bed & Breakfast into the premier wedding destination on Cape Cod, despite her recent messy divorce.

Jonathan Reynolds moved back to the Cape to take over his uncle's business and start fresh after his own marriage ended. He's not looking for anything complicated - until he meets Kendall, with her big plans and wild mop of curls.

Throw an unruly foster puppy and an uptight new neighbor into the mix and things get a little crazy. Now Kendall has to decide if it's the kind of crazy that she can live with... for the rest of her life.

My Review:

O’Sullivan takes Cape Cod by storm with her latest romance. This coastal town comes to life at the tip of her pen. She tackles the issues that individuals deal with every day and wraps them up in a heartfelt, sometimes comical HEA package. Even with the HEA, there is realism that runs throughout. I found myself firmly grounded in the here and now throughout, rather than stuck in a fairy tale.

I appreciate the gradual character development that O’Sullivan uses in this work. I felt like I was getting to know real people rather than simply characters in a novel. I love how boisterous & in your face some of these characters are. It’s brilliant to see these types of individuals make their way into work, even as secondary characters. At times I really felt like I’d stepped into my hometown, with the variety of individuals that I met throughout this novel.

As a whole this was a well written, intriguing novel that definitely made me smile. I’d recommend it to those looking for a sweet, heartfelt romance.

But when Jule comes knocking on his door, it's the closest he's ever come to finally finding redemption. My Review:

Leigh’s writing style held me completely captivated throughout. It was completely unique yet down to earth, and so well-crafted that I couldn’t turn away. The history, of weaponry, lives, and places, captured my imagination and kept me riveted. I appreciated the realism and research behind this work. The mix of old world and new adds an extra element to the tale that allows the reader to feel a connection to the work.

The complex characters that Leigh presents to her readers are breathtaking. I was completely enchanted by them and felt like I really knew them. Through her characters Leigh makes the notion of reincarnation astoundingly palatable and easy to believe. There is a sense of wonder accompanying it throughout.

As a whole this was a wonderfully unique read that I would recommend to all lovers of romance, and of Shakespeare.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Leslie Malone faces an empty, lonely summer. Her marriage is over. Her daughter is overseas, living her dream. Her students are enjoying a carefree summer break. What's the purpose of her life if she's not a wife, mother and teacher? The idea of a roadtrip beckons her. Aimless wandering? Or inspired discovery? A woman of faith, she asks God for His guidance, then does her best to follow His direction.

Hank Harrison is a quiet man, good with his hands, but short on words. He's paid a heavy price for not forgiving his son for horrible mistakes made years ago, mistakes with vast consequences. Hank recognizes Leslie as an answer to his prayers, and together, they begin to mend their futures.

Neither of them plans to fall in love. Will the worst summer of Leslie's life become the season that redeems them both?

My Review:

Larsen has a very approachable and flowing writing style that not only complements the storyline but also makes you feel like you’re part of it. She draws on your emotions, allowing you to feel for the characters. I found it easy to picture myself in the main character’s shoes. I was quite impressed with the way that Larsen works religious undertones into this novel. Being one who isn’t generally a fan of inspirational/religion based romance novels, I have to say Larsen takes a brilliant approach. Although she makes it obvious that God’s will works its way through this novel, Larsen never preaches at her audience. It’s a brilliant balance.

The characters in this novel are quite well developed. The main character is such a real person that you cannot help but connect with her. Her strength is admirable, yet the vulnerability makes her human. The supporting cast is also quite well put together. I appreciate how everyone complements each other, without being duplicate or unnecessary characters. Not everyone serves a major role in this novel, but they all definitely serve a purpose.

This is an intricately woven tale that will take you on the journey of a lifetime. Disillusionment, self-acceptance, and romance all make their way into the mix for one intimate journey.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

After the deaths of three undercover cops investigating a drug ring in a seedy strip club in Seattle, Detective Mahir Hussain has been sent to finish the job. He joins the club's security team in the hopes of finding enough evidence to bust the operation before the men in charge find a reason to put him in a shallow grave. To protect the strippers, only gay men can work the club. Ridley, the cold and intimidating head of security, knows exactly how to test potential new hires-including Mahir. From the minute they meet, Mahir and Ridley engage in a dangerous dance of sex and mind games. Mahir needs to find his evidence before Ridley figures out he's a cop-and before they both grow too close to betray one another.

As the game goes on, Mahir burrows deeper into the operation, where he learns there's much more happening than meets the eye . . . and why every cop who made it this far has been silenced with a bullet.

My Review:

The descriptions and tone of this novel are so vivid that you not only picture it all, but feel like you’re right there. The combination of police undercover work with familial obligations creates a breathtaking and solidly captivating novel that you won’t be able to put down. Religion, duty, and self-worth all make an appearance throughout. The authors meld suspense with mayhem while showing how romance can crop up at any time. They tell a tale that I found myself fully invested in. I always needed to know what would happen next and how it would end, but I never actually wanted the tale to end.

The multifaceted character development throughout allows readers to really get to know the characters. These authors make sure you are introduced to them both inside and outside of their work place. Seeing the fine line that the main characters walk, morally, religiously, and ethically, draws you closer to them. I found myself rooting for them, and at the same time, wanting to get to know them better. The antagonists in this novel really highlight both the plight of the main characters as well as commenting on the current state of society, the tings many of us try to ignore.

I’m normally not a fan of multi-author works, but these two work together so seamlessly that you can’t help but get caught up in the breathlessness of it all. This novel is definitely a must read for those who enjoy the genre.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Does she put her trust in him…again?

Lieutenant Jane Vahalik is done with Sergeant Clay Renner. He messed up their romance when he dished out too much male swagger. She gets enough of that on the job to put up with it in her personal life—regardless of how hot Clay may be.

Then her niece is kidnapped, and suddenly he is the only cop Jane trusts to lead the search. The rush of attraction sizzling between them surprises her. So does his determination to prove she's wrong about him. It could be just the tense situation—or it could be Clay—but Jane's feelings for him are growing. Maybe they deserve a second chance….

My Review:

Johnson has a way of drawing you directly into the heart of her work. Her subtly loud descriptions fill you with a sense of haunting, while at the same time giving you hope. You cannot help but picture the entirety of this novel. Each new page becomes a vivid reality for the reader who is rushing towards the conclusion, needing to know what will happen next. I was thoroughly impressed with Johnson’s wrap up of the story. Each aspect of the story is brought to conclusion. The entire mystery is solved in a manner that fits with the tone & subject of the story. I also appreciated the fact that she didn’t jump into the future where everyone was living happily ever after. The remaining uncertainty and discontent summed up the story perfectly while still wrapping up the tale and giving you a sense of closure. You can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The first few chapters really gets you in the thick with the main characters. You get to know their thoughts and feelings. Watching them come together after falling apart is quite interesting. Watching them battling against their past while struggling in the present really gives you a good feel for who they are inside. The supporting cast was also quite diverse and really added to the story. The interactions between the various characters were so real & human that you almost forget that they are simply characters in a novel.

Overall, this was a well-crafted and extremely insightful read. Johnson balances real life with suspense and romance in a manner that will keep you captivated. I thoroughly enjoyed my first foray into her work, and will be repeating it again soon.

In typical Jesse style, he jumps at a chance to purchase Main Street Gallery, a Boise tradition in the art world.

Moving out of the house and into her own condo by the Boise River is the second. When she finds her folks are selling the gallery to Jesse, she vows to stop the sale, no holds barred.

When sparks fly between Jesse and Taylor, family gets in the way of reason, and they have to decide what is more important, their desires or keeping Main Street Gallery open and successful.

My Review:

What a completely captivating novel. Cahoon had me wrapped up in this story from the beginning to the end. It was easy to imagine the multiple locales that her characters visited. At the same time, there was so much more to this story than simply 2 individuals falling in love. Identity crisis, health issues, and family problems all make their mark in this quietly remarkable tale.

The characters in this novel are absolutely priceless. The mother had me in stitches throughout. And that doesn’t even get me into the main characters. Cahoon has created some very brilliant & multi-faceted characters to carry her story forward. Not only does she develop her main couple as full, well rounded individuals, but they are also complex characters. One rarely sees characters like this in a romance. It really heightened the story for me.

Overall, this is a must read for all romance fans, whether you’re a cowboy enthusiast or not. Cahoon balances the best of all worlds with this and will make your heart sing.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

As an undercover operative for the Constellation League, Marcos Starlaw’s current assignment is a dangerous mission. Posing as a low-end gem merchant, he must infiltrate the Delta Seven mining colony to discern whether pirates have overrun the planet as his superiors suspect. Still, he expects to return home soon, back into the arms of the many women who eagerly await his return.

Burned and scarred by torture, Nova Drayton has lived the past two years in a cave, waiting for someone to help her people. The governor of her home world is a lying, thieving traitor who has taken up with the Limaxian pirates that have overrun her society. They’ve killed many innocents, including her parents and fiancé. Realizing law enforcers may never come—that they’ve likely forgotten their promise to so much as patrol her beleaguered colony—Nova now hates everything having to do with the vaunted Constellation League and its pretentious officers.

When Marcos comes face to face with the pirates and a weapon of mass destruction, he makes a critical mistake, blowing his cover. If Nova doesn’t help Marcos escape the pirates … well, he’s already one heartbeat away from taking his last breath. How can he convince a girl who’s lived through hell that he’s the one she’s been waiting for?

With nothing left but their own ingenuity, the pair must find a way to ally or die at the hands of cutthroats.

My Review:

This was a wildly imaginative story and a wonderfully exciting adventure. This one of a kind story was suspenseful while at the same time being tender and thoughtful. It was a heady mix. Sams creates a world unlike any other that you cannot help but imagine. Her writing is so vivid that at times I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a story. I did, however, find the pace of the story itself to race ahead at times and lag behind at others.

The vivid manner in which you can picture the various individuals and species in this novel transports you right into the mix. The main character’s take-me-as-I-am playboy persona is priceless, as is the intelligent commander hiding behind the façade. The female lead is similarly one of a kind. She’s the type of individual that you cannot pin into a single category. The multifaceted presentation of her character really allows you to get to know her and feel for her. The supporting cast was just as intriguing. Not only does Sams introduce you to a variety of individual personalities, but you get to meet some intriguing species as well.

Overall, this was a unique trip into the realm of SciFi. I quite enjoyed it.

The last thing Jordan Marsh wants is to remain friends with Michaela. They’d crossed the line from friends to lovers and that was where he was going to stay, after all he’d been relentlessly plotting her seduction for months.

Now Michaela has woken up to a slight hangover, a relationship with a guy she thought she knew, a mother planning a wedding, and a brother and a best friend who think it’s important to run a background check on your new man. What could be more normal?

Just as Michaela is beginnings to adjust to the status of their new relationship things start exploding; literally.

Warning: This book is funny, steamy and contains sex scenes with chocolate that some readers might find delicious.

My Review:

This was an intriguing story. Wells combines a variety of different premise into one solid storyline. It definitely stands out from the multiplicity of contemporary romances flooding the market at the moment. Wells’ writing is smooth and well put together, however, it took me a little bit to get into it. Her descriptions, on the other hand painted the scene before you like a well-oiled wheel. This author also made me laugh while I enjoyed the situations the characters found themselves in.

I found the characters in this story to be quite enjoyable. The female lead is the strong, funny individual that you wish you could be. Wells deals with the dual point of view quite well, allowing her readers insight into both sides of the story. However, their dialogue was a bit stilted at times. It wasn’t so much what was said, as how they said it. It didn’t always flow the way people actually talk. It was just enough to pop me out of the ‘zone’ when it happened.

Overall, this was a cute, spicy introduction to this author’s work. She definitely has a way of giving a twist to her stories.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Madison Carmichael’s carefully controlled world has just spun off its axis. Not only has jet-setting playboy and investor Jake Colt landed his helicopter in the middle of the biggest photo shoot of her career, she is shocked to discover he purchased her parents’ financially troubled winery.

Madison refuses to let this interloper take what belongs to her family, no matter what passions he stirs in her heart. She’ll do anything to get him out of Serenity Creek and her family’s business, even if it means striking a deal that goes against every grain in her body with the arrogant man himself.

Jake has no interest in handling the Carmichael winery acquisition, but he has little choice considering the business agreement he made with his father. As with all of his father’s dealings, there are strings attached, and Jake is determined to cut them at all costs.

If he is going to spend time in the backwards town that reminds him too much of the one that betrayed him all to turn some two bit winery around, he is going to do it on his own terms, which includes encouraging the feisty woman who has captured his attention to break out of her shell and live a little.

But when two opposing forces clash, sparks are bound to fly…

My Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Kadence takes the clash of two worlds concept and brings it all together seamlessly. This novel was well put together with a solid and interesting plot. Kadence paints a vivid picture of both New York and the winery. I feel like I’ve been there. She uses this as the backdrop for her inspiring and fun story. I found myself completely wrapped up in the world that she created for her audience.

The cast of this novel is so warm and inviting that you can’t help but fall in love with them. I enjoyed getting to know each and every one of these spirited individuals. The main characters were both completely breathtaking. I enjoyed how they were both trying to make their own way, but now differently they went about it, based on where they came from. This actually served to make them the perfect couple. I also appreciate the fact that neither of them were melodramatic.

This is, overall, a fun novel. It was a fantastic, quick read that is well worth picking up.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

TEN YEARS AGO ONE DEVASTATING NIGHT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR AUSTIN, HUNTER AND ALEX. NOW THEY MUST EACH PLAY THEIR PART IN THE REVENGE AGAINST THE ONE MAN WHO RUINED IT ALL.

Hunter Talbot Grant III, sports figure du jour, wealthy beyond measure and disreputable by choice, has cultivated a reputation that masks the shadows of his past. When the opportunity to ensure financial destruction for Jason Treffen arises, he can't refuse. But first he must shake off the woman sent to tame him!

Zoe Brook, PR agent extraordinaire, never fails to transform a tarnished star. And Hunter's no different. Except there's a catch. Beneath their scorching mutual attraction, Zoe has a secret, she's also been on the wrong side of Jason Treffen, and she has as much of a taste for revenge as Hunter does!

My Review:

This is a well and insightfully written tale. I was quite captivated with the story and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Crews paints a picture of hope and despair that keeps you captivated throughout. Her writing style and voice serve to highlight not only the overall story, but the personality of the main character.

I must admit, I’m normally not a fan of multi-author series, but this one is absolutely perfect. The storylines & the authors’ writing styles writing styles work amazingly well together. There is a distinct difference in the tones & voice of the novels that match perfectly with the characters at hand. The tone of this story actually sets your perception of the main characters and their relationship to one another. The undercurrent runs through the entire novel, giving you a sense of foreboding & excitement. But Crews doesn’t stop at that with her character development. She adds a sense of approachability and realism to those individuals who are simply individuals in the media for most of us. The supporting cast also helps to round out his novel. They are not only individuals in their own right, but also as the lifelong friends that the main characters depend on for support. Together they serve as the perfect cast for this intriguing tale.

My biggest issue is not with this novel, but with the series as a whole. And it’s more of a question than an issue, at that. What chance of fate manages to get every man that Jason Treffen has wronged set up with one of the women he wronged? It’s an irony that you don’t see in the individual instalments, but only when you look at the series as a whole. At the same time, it’s also one of the elements that makes the series so memorable.

Overall, this was a great addition to the Fifth Avenue trilogy. I’d recommend it to anyone and can’t wait to read more.

Guest post with Maggie Thom

Today you all get to spend some time with author Maggie Thom.

The Right to Write Different ~ By Maggie Thom

I think the goal of every author, well besides being published and making lots of money J, is that their books, their stories are different. It almost seems impossible to think that with the millions and billions of books out there that an author really could make their writing different but I truly believe they can. I think every author has a unique voice but it's whether they truly find it or not.

Writing really is an interesting process, you string words together and hope that how you string them together is different than how the next writer/author does it. Not all that easy when you think about it. I mean really with a billion books and untold stories out there you have to come up with a unique way of saying it. Is that truly possible?

I believe it is. I think the best compliment I've received as a writer and an author is 'your stories are unique', 'your stories aren't cookie cutter', 'you write different', 'I've never read anything like your book'... To me that means the hard work I put in to writing different stories and having a different voice is working.

Probably the best advice that I can give to another writer/author is to practice with several different types of stories and genres. Test yourself as to what you truly do like to write and how you write. When I decided in the '90's that I was going to get serious about my writing, I thought I wanted to write for kids. So I did. Then I thought I wanted to write young adult stories. So again I wrote some stories. Then I thought I'd write the type of stories that I was reading at the time, romances. Then I discovered my really true love, reading and writing suspense/thrillers. Now that got me excited and challenged me in that I wanted my stories to be true to me, to be interesting, to be compelling... so what did I do to get there?

The truth is that writing in all of the other genres, showed me a different side to writing, a different depth because I had to use very different language and words depending on my audience. That really helped me to understand a lot more the impact my writing had on readers. It also forced me to really get to know my setting, the language I used, how I put the words together and my characters. And I had to get to know them through the eyes of my readers. If I'm writing for an eight year old and I don't have that character acting like an eight year old expects, the setting how they would see it or the words ones they understand, then I've lost them. If I'm writing for an adult, the characters have to be identifiable, the story has to have depth, the setting has to be believable and it all has to be something they can connect with. It really helped me to pay more attention not only to the story I was writing but how I was writing it, how I was putting my words together, who the people were that were in my stories and to find my voice to tell it. I really started looking at what I liked, what appealed to me and I added that in with keeping in mind what the reader, me, wanted.

So whether you're writing for a child, a teenager or an adult, the language used, the setting and the depth of the characters, matter. And how you string your words together really does make a difference. As a writer it is now your job to find your words, your voice that will convey that to the reader... in a way that is compelling. Not only do you have the right to write different but I think it will bring a new passion to your writing.

What do you find makes your writing different?

My Review:

This novel is priceless! Neeley had me in fits of laughter from the first chapter. Her tone is light & approachable but inviting and melds perfectly with the story at hands, as well as the ones that precede it. She also takes the suspense in the series to a whole new level. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, trying to guess what would happen next. She also weaves a remarkable story of love and loss together throughout this tale. By weaving these relationships alongside up and coming business practices she creates a completely unique tale that you cannot help but live alongside the characters.

Neeley takes the characters that we’ve come to know previously in the series and takes them to a whole new level. The main characters come to life like no others. I love how she develops them individually, and they continue to be individuals once they’re together. Even though they are a couple, Neeley never portrays them as ‘that couple’ who are no longer individuals. It adds an extra element of approachability & realism to the novel. The supporting cast rounds out this novel very nicely. Everyone is so real, and this family is one that you can definitely come home to.

Overall? I’m so to see this series end. I have fallen so in love with Emerald Springs & the 5 authors that brought it to us that I don’t want to let go. Neeley definitely gave us the perfect ending to this series. This is a novel well worth reading.

But those who want them apart are relentless, and with their careers on the line, Luke and Dell must decide if their love is worth risking it all.

My Review:

The writing in this novel is exhilarating. Rothert takes off skating, and you spend the entire novel out of breath. I read it in little more than a single sitting. The story itself is wildly imaginative and fiercely loveable. It is seamlessly put together, and presented in a manner that you can’t help but visualise. The hockey behind the novel is also solid. It was a complete rush. This is an emotionally profound novel. Rothert tells an incredibly racy love story while also tackling some very tough issues. Rothert definitely had me in tears more than once, and laughing out loud a great deal. There were also some moments that cause me to swoon.

Before I even start talking about the characters I should probably mention that I was hooked on the male lead when he was just a minor character in the first novel of the series. Now that he’s fully developed to lead the story, he’s absolutely unforgettable. He is beyond swoon-worthy. The female lead is definitely very unique as well. She is fighting to reconcile so many aspects of life that it amazes me that she’s still standing on her own two feet. Together, these two are unforgettable. Combine this with the strong secondary characters that Rothert brings forward and you have the perfect cast.

Overall, this was a fantastic novel. If I weren’t hooked on the series before I would be now. My final thoughts? Bring on the next please!

My Review:

This was a brilliantly heart-warming novel. Flockton had me captivated with her intriguing storyline and wonderful scenery. Not only did I enjoy revisiting Emerald Springs, but I feel like I’ve been to Australia. Flockton`s well laid out plot draws you in, both to the romance at hand and to the story of Emerald Springs in general. The suspense in the series is really starting to ramp up with this instalment. Tensions run high and emotions get away from you. It all combines into a read that you won`t be able to put down (I devoured it in a couple of hours).

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Daniel much better in this instalment. He went from being the ‘brooding brother’ from the rest of the series to a very enjoyable character in his own right. I couldn’t help but feel for and understand him. And the female lead that he was paired with was the perfect counterpoint. The contrast and similarities between these two well-developed characters really draws you in to their world and their lives. I also enjoyed seeing their interactions with the rest of their families. As a supporting cast they rounded out this lifelike novel very well.

Overall, this is a must read novel for those who enjoy romance. I wouldn`t hesitate to recommend it, or this new to me author, to anyone.

★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Some mistakes can't be undone. After making the absolute worst decision of his life, horse veterinarian Drake Brewster will do whatever it takes to make amends with his best friend. And it starts with a summer at the Last Chance Ranch. But not everyone is thrilled about it…especially bartender and psych student Tracy Gibbons.

And that's where Tracy finds herself in a serious dilemma. He's the one person she can't trust, but she wants Drake something fierce…and the feeling is fiercely mutual! But if she climbs into the saddle, will she be ready for the ride?

My Review:

Thompson has crafted a remarkable tale that combines self-reflection with hands on ranch action. Subtle meets vivid in her writing, creating a real life experience for the readers. Thompson actually uses symbolism throughout this novel to draw her readers towards certain conclusions or events without stating it outright. Oh, and the hat. Thompson killed me with the hat. It was absolutely priceless. And the symbolism was perfect. I also love how she alludes to previous events at Last Chance Ranch and in the surrounding areas without stating it outright. This allows readers to start reading at this instalment without losing a blink. It also adds a sense of nostalgia for returning readers.

I enjoyed every moment spent getting to know the characters that carry this story forward. Not only does Thompson develop them in the past and present, but we also see what they want for the future. The supporting cast gets little to no development within the pages of this novel. The assumption is that readers had met them previously. Even if you haven’t read about them in the past, you get to know them well enough to serve their roles in this story, especially since this story is focused almost solely on the main characters.

All in all, this scrumptious novel is a must read for all those who enjoy romance, cowboys, and some good old southern charm.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Perfect is good.

Imperfect is even better…

City-slicker lawyer Jeannette Trenton is about as welcome at the Last Chance Ranch as a rattlesnake at a square dance. She's there to atone for one major mistake. But Jeannette's pretty sure righting her big wrong does not include thinking lustful thoughts about the ranch's new cowhand….

Zach Powell knows Jeannette's type—a wound-up-tight perfectionist with one eye on her email at all times. Heck, that used to be him. She needs to shake it loose, face her imperfections and allow herself to make mistakes. There's definitely no mistake about the wickedly sexy vibe between them. This gal is gonna have to "cowboy up"…or miss the ride of her life!

My Review:

This was definitely an intriguing love story. Thompson uses the age old city girl falls for country boy but throws in one heck of a twist. She also does so with a flair for life, and for second chances. She adds in a touch of heat and creates a winner. Thompson has a knack for storytelling that draws you into this captivating world & keeps you there throughout her intriguing tale.

The characters in this novel are quite unique. In spite of all of their similarities they are quite different individuals. Thompson develops them so seamlessly and fully that you feel that you know them personally. It makes it quite easy to get into the story. You feel like you’ve been invited into the family. These are such strong characters that they carry the story on their own. The supporting cast is an additional bonus.

Overall, this is the type of story that not only takes you on a joy ride & warms your heart, but also one that makes you think about your own life in a new life.

Dirty Deeds by S.E. Jakes

Title:  Dirty Deeds
Series:  Dirty Deeds #1
Author:  S.E. Jakes
Published:  Jan 13/14 by Riptide Publishing
Length:  94pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  m/m romantic suspense
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:
★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Two seasoned operatives finally meet their match: each other.

Cillian works for the mysterious Special Branch 20: an organization that runs black ops commissioned by the British government. His specialty is deep undercover assignments with virtually no support. He’s been alone for so long that he no longer knows anything else.

Mal’s also used to being alone. Wanted in several states and even more countries, he’s not allowed in the vicinity of any of his former Navy SEAL teammates. And his current assignment is to track Cillian in order to discover the spook’s endgame. Except he’s no longer sure which one of them is getting played.

Cillian isn’t about to let the mission that’s consumed him for the past several years crumble because an outsider is poking around where he doesn’t belong. But Mal forces his way through Cillian’s defenses—and into his heart—exposing a devastating betrayal that could destroy them both.

My Review:

Dirty Deeds is a sinfully decadent read. This novella was hot & suspenseful while at the same time remaining fun & enjoyable. Jakes has a well written, approachable style that makes it easy for her readers to lose themselves in the pages of the story. She brings forward aspects of life that one rarely thinks of and wraps them up in an intensely gratifying suspense that will keep you on your toes. Jakes balances heat & power with vulnerability to create the perfect thrill.

I love how you get to know the main characters in the present with just hints at their path. They are both well developed with an air of mystery to them. I felt a connection with the main character right from the beginning of the story. His intensity increases the intensity of the story as a whole. Also, the fact that she places two alpha males together ramps up the storyline. They must balance who they are with each other alongside who they are by themselves.

It was a quick read that I couldn’t put down. One small word of warning, however. Jakes leaves us with a definite cliff-hanger (and one large book hangover) at the end of this one. So, as much as I’d qualify this as a must read, if you’re not a fan of cliff-hangers, I’d suggest waiting for the rest of the series to be released.

Wild Ride by Juliette Jones

Title:  Wild Ride
Author:  Juliette Jones
Published:  Feb 21/14 by Juliette Jones
Length:  135pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  erotic romance
Shelf:  review
Rating:
★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

For Lacey Callihan, things couldn’t get much worse. She’s working a dead-end job, living with a dead-end boyfriend and stuck in a dead-end town. When Lacey’s boyfriend steals her life savings and hits her for questioning him, it’s the last straw. She skips town in her rust-heap of a car – which she can only pray will get her as far as Texas. And it does. Spluttering to a final stop just as she crosses the border. But when two ultra-hot cowboys pull up in their convertible red Mustang and offer her a ride, Lacey has a feeling her luck is about to change …

My Review:

This novella is well and thoughtfully written. Jones’ tone makes the story feel personal on many levels. She invites you into the story as if you were there with the main character. She creates an amazingly hot story that is also believable. Jones tells the story of these three individuals while allowing your imagination to run wild with the possibilities. I did, however, feel a bit disjointed in the epilogue. Don’t get me wrong, it was a brilliant wrap up to this fantastic tale, but the tone of the story changed drastically. It was enough to make me stop and do a double take.

The main characters in this novel were quite well developed for a novella. Jones lets you know them in the past and in the present. You can also see who these people see themselves as being, and how they see each other. This all melds together to give you a cohesive picture of these individuals. You also understand how they came together as a group. The supporting cast was minimal, but also not necessary to the plot. The characters that Jones developed suited their purpose perfectly.

Overall, this is definitely a story that lives up to its name. It is, without a doubt, a wild ride. I’d thoroughly recommend it to any who enjoy a quick, hot read.

Guest Post with Sarah Daltry

Today, you all get to spend some time with Sarah Daltry.  Have fun and enjoy yourselves!

It might be because I have a background in theatre, but for me, a novel is an entire production. It’s about the story, but also the cover and the teasers and the trailer, and especially the title. I suppose it’s also my background in literature and poetry that makes me go for these artistic titles that don’t say much about the story, except symbolically, and thus lead people to pass by the books, because it doesn’t spell everything out in three words.

The series is called Flowering, so every piece of it is named for a flower. Except “Her Brother’s Best Friend.” It really started with that short erotic story, which is SHORT. It’s maybe eight pages, but people seemed to like it, so I thought… maybe there could be a novel here. There wasn’t. Not exactly. The novel I set out to write in Forget Me Not, which was a novel, then a novella, and then a novel again, was not what came out. From that novel, the series was born and, although I have some issues with my writing in that one, I feel like it, in a lot of ways, represents the series as well. My writing, like Lily, was immature. I have revised a bit, but it’s not my strongest work and I wonder if it hurts me when trying to market the series as a whole. However, I tend to feel like people who like the series understand its place in the series and I leave it at that. Lily isn’t perfect to readers, even though she’s been raised to be perfect, but that’s kind of the point of the book. She has no idea who or what she is – but she has to make all these choices and also is expected to know what she wants.

Forget Me Not is a flower, obviously, but it’s multifaceted as a title. Lily and Derek are at different schools and, at first, it’s a plea to him that he remember her. They were supposed to work as a couple. Of course, life isn’t that simple, is it? The other piece of the title I think is important is that it’s about remembering who you are. When Lily ends up with Jack, she’s in this whole whirlwind of a mess between the two guys (and it’s not cheating, for the record, as the conversation with Derek certainly could be read as a breakup or at least enough of a fight for her to see it that way). She ends up making a tough choice, which may not seem like much to people long past their college years, but the decision is that she’s going to pick herself. She’s going to figure herself out and I think the book is just as much about that – not forgetting who you are despite how everyone else sees you.

In Jack’s story, I chose Lily of the Valley, because first of all, you have Lily. She’s pretty important to the story! There is also the literal valley, at their secret spot toward the end of the book. Most importantly, though, the flower is a symbol of trust and second chances, which I think are key to the novel, and it’s also a symbol of kindness, something that Jack finds in Lily.

Star of Bethlehem brings to mind the holidays, and the story is set at New Year’s. It is also a symbol of hope and of reconciliation. In many ways, new conflicts arise during the novella, but at the end, Jack and Lily are still letting go of some of what has brought them pain and looking at a new start.

The orange blossom is recognized as a symbol of marriage and fidelity and, although the wedding doesn’t take place during Orange Blossom, the main question in the novel is whether a happily ever after will be possible for Jack and Lily, given the circumstances that surround them. And I think they both show their fidelity in the novel.

Ambrosia is reciprocal love and what better symbol for a wedding?

Finally, there’s Alana’s story – Blue Rose. A blue rose is rare and the flower symbolizes both mystery and love at first sight, two things that are somewhat relevant to Alana and Jack, but more significantly, the blue rose is the unattainable. For Jack and Alana, they are just too broken together to be able to be more than friends, and that is something that they both have to face. In addition, since they’re young and they both don’t really have much else in their lives, they don’t understand how love is not enough to heal them, but it’s because their love is something different. They are both looking for the impossible in the other – but in the end, they’re looking at the wrong person.

Anyway, the entire series is called Flowering, because it’s about growing. When we set out for college and into our adult lives, we are planting seeds, but it’s through experiences, through the people we come to know, and through love, that we not only grow as people, but that we grow into the people we hope and want to be as well.

About the author:

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

About The Flowering:

Flowering is the story of Jack and Lily. They’re college kids with their own issues, who manage to find each other. What starts as physical attraction and sexual awakening becomes so much more. Jack is troubled, with a past that makes it hard for him to see the future. Lily comes from a perfect world where she’s expected to play the role she was given. When they’re together, though, Jack becomes someone even he cares for, and Lily becomes whole.

This series is about growing up, about “flowering” into the person you become. It’s also about love and how it starts with one chance encounter and turns into a lifetime. Jack and Lily don’t have it easy, but they have each other. They’re not billionaires or rock stars or undercover agents; they’re just college kids looking to be a little less alone in the world.

Now complete in one volume. Includes the short stories, "Her Brother's Best Friend" and "Morning Glory;" the novels, Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, Blue Rose, and Orange Blossom; and the novellas, Star of Bethlehem and Ambrosia.
