Ten years ago Winter’s heart was broken beyond repair by Stone McCoy. Now she is a travel agent ready to lead an Alaskan Cruise and to her surprise Stone McCoy is on her tour. A long ago phone call shattered her trust and her self-confidence. She never planned to see Stone again.

While at college, Stone McCoy woke up, after a fraternity party, to find a girl in his bed. Weeks later she told him she’s pregnant. Calling Winter to break things off was the worst night of his life. Now he’s hoping for a second chance at happiness.

The chemistry is electrifying but old issues lead these two on a merry chase. Can they put old hurts aside and begin again? Join Rancher Stone McCoy and Winter Gavin as they try to find happiness from Alaska to Texas and finally on his Montana Ranch.

Ten years ago Rancher Stone McCoy broke Winter Gavin’s heart. Now he turns up hoping for another chance. Will one too many surprises shy Winter away?

Excerpt:

Snow, glistening snow, blinding snow, blizzard, or flurries; Winter didn’t care. It was still cold and in abundance. It’d been a long week since Christmas and Stone hadn’t given her one kind word. He acted as though he was mad at the world and every time she tried to talk to him, he’d invent a reason why it wasn’t a good time to talk. Perhaps it was payback for her refusal to talk things out with him before Christmas. It hurt that he didn’t completely trust her with Rachael anymore, for whatever reason.

It was time to move into the foreman’s house, her house. It was for the best. All the tension between her and Stone wasn’t good for Rachael and maybe it would improve his disposition.

Reluctantly she turned away from the window when she heard Stone clear his throat. Why did he still have to be so damn sexy? “I was just about to pack.”

“Where is Rachael?” Stone stared at her intently, making her uncomfortable.

“Building a snowman with Crabby. You do know he’s anything but crabby don’t you?”

Stone gave her a boyish grin. “That’s the fun of it. Besides he likes his name.”

“I’ll go out and help them. I wasn’t sure if she was allowed to be alone with Crabby, but he insisted that it was fine. I should have asked you but—”

“It’s fine, Winter.” He walked toward her slowly, leaving her nowhere to run.

“All the same, I think—”

“That’s the problem. You think too much. I want you to smile, and I want to see your beautiful eyes light up when you see me. You don’t do that anymore.”

“What? You hardly have time to say hello to me. Why should I smile at you? I don’t understand why you would say it’s fine. Nothing is fine around here. You don’t trust me with Rachael—”

“I’m sorry about that whole conversation. I was in a mood and I didn’t mean it.”

“Well, thank you for that.”

He reached for her hand. “That’s it? The coldness in your voice surprises me. You know I love you.”

Pulling her hand away, she shook her head. “My coldness surprises you? You haven’t talked to me in a week and I don’t know what to think.”

“You’re just running away from me, from us. How can you not know that I love you?”

Her jaw dropped and she instantly closed it. “Love isn’t just words, it’s actions, too. If you’ll excuse me I want to make sure Rachael is warm enough.”

Stone frowned as she scooted around him.

She didn’t know what to say. Thinking too much? He wasn’t trying to understand her at all. She started to put on her boots when the door opened, letting in a blast of winter cold. There stood Rachael, her cheeks apple red and her clothes caked with snow.

“Oh my, did Crabby make you into a snowman?”

“The bad snow did this.” Rachael laughed.

“Here, let me help you.” Winter closed the door and started with Rachael’s snow stiffened hat. It took a while as she worked her way downward until finally Rachael’s frozen socks were off. She ushered her daughter toward the fireplace.

“Sit here and I’ll make you some hot chocolate.”

Rachael sat in the big chair by the fireplace and smiled when Winter put a quilt over her. “I like hot chocolate and pie.”

“Me too, with pie.” Stone grinned at the two of them.

“Well I guess I can make some for you too.” Winter walked toward the kitchen. Damn her traitorous heart. She longed for that man, but every time she saw him was one more lash against her heart. A reluctant apology and declaration of love didn’t erase his behavior toward her all week. Trust wasn’t just telling the truth, it was being able to know that every argument wasn’t Armageddon.

She searched the cabinets and couldn’t find the hot chocolate. “I don’t see the mix for the hot cocoa.”

Rachael rolled her eyes and laughed. “You scratch it with milk.”

“Here, let me help you.” Stone stood at her side before she had a chance to respond. He reached around her, trapping her against the counter. He gave her a long look, swooped down, and kissed her.

Winter tried to jump back but there was no place for her to go. He smelled of leather and pine. He smelled of horses and pure, white snow. His full lips looked inviting and before she knew it, she had her tongue in his mouth, exploring it, and enjoying it too much. Pushing against his chest, she broke the kiss.

Her body trembled and when she looked up at him, he gave her a sexy, knowing smile. Her body betrayed her and she knew the sooner she got out of this house the better. Most of all she needed to get a hold of herself.

Stone stepped back a bit, though not far enough and she could feel his heat wash over her, but she tried to pretend he had no effect. “How…how do you make it? Milk of course but what else?”

Watching, she tried to concentrate on what Stone was teaching her, but she couldn’t focus. The tingling of her body put her on high alert.

“I’m going to move into the other house today.”

Stone stopped stirring the milk. He frowned and opened his mouth as if to say something. Instead, he closed it and shrugged. He poured the hot chocolate into mugs and left hers on the counter.

Regret flowed through her as she watched Rachael and Stone laugh together. She’d still be within shouting distance if Rachael needed her, she reasoned. It was for the best wasn’t it?

“Mama, do you like Daddy’s choc-o-late?”

Winter nodded and grabbed her mug. She walked over to them and sat on the couch. It would have been easy to pretend they were a family, but it wasn’t true.

My review:

What a nice, enjoyable read. Ball develops her world in a quiet, low key manner that lets her readers focus on the storyline while they can also picture their surroundings. While Ball incorporates the elements traditionally found in a contemporary romance she also tells a story that stands out on its own. There are so many unique elements to this story that you can’t help but appreciate it. I also appreciate the fact that the lives of the characters were left open at the end while the story had a sense of completeness and no loose ends.
The characters in this novel were quite well developed, both the main characters and the supporting ones. I quite enjoyed getting to know everyone in such a natural setting. Nothing ever seemed forced. I’ve got to admit, however, that there were many times where I wanted to beat the two main characters on the head with a pillow. The number of times that they said they needed to talk and then refused to talk was bordering on ridiculous.

And now for the important questions: Is this my first novel by this author? Yes. Will I be reading more? Yes, can’t wait to read the rest of this series & her other writing. And finally. Would I recommend this to others? Most definitely.

Guest Post with author Trudi Jaye

Today I'm handing you all over to the capable hand of Trudi Jaye.

Here’s a disclaimer before I start: I really enjoy being around people. Not all writers do—some are happiest at their desk, creating amazing characters out of the depths of their minds, and leaving the human interaction to other people.

But that’s not me.

With this in mind, one of the things that I believe is vitally important in a writer’s daily life is interaction with other people. Not just any people, mind, but a very special group of supportive friends and family who will help you on your writing journey.

I’ve been lucky enough to find some amazing writer buddies along the way who have all helped to mould and influence me in such a positive way that I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

The first writing group I was in had an honesty pact. We vowed that we would never lie to each other about our writing. It was amazingly refreshing to be able to tell someone in the group when I thought they had done something that didn’t work, or had been written in the wrong way. Because we did it with the best of intentions, with the idea that we were helping each other get better, it really worked. We trusted each other to tell the truth, and it was amazing. I value it hugely when anyone from that group tells me they like my story, because I know I can trust what they’re saying. I love them all, and thank my lucky stars that I met them, because they helped and encouraged me when I first started writing, ensuring that I got better, tried harder, and wrote more than if I had been on my own.

My second writing group was through my membership of Romance Writers of New Zealand (RWNZ). It’s an amazing organisation with supportive members and an amazing conference every year. I was invited to join a group through my contacts at RWNZ, and haven’t looked back since. In my time with these amazing ladies, I have finished my first book, and have gone on to finish two more, I have just published my first book, and I am planning to publish many more. They’ve given me just the right kind of inspiration, offered advice, kept me motivated, and were there for me on my publishing journey.

I know, I sound like I’m spouting all sorts of nice nothings for the sake of it. But I really believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the help and support of the people around me. And I’ve heard other writers telling the same story. The sum of the group is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Together we have created something that is so amazing, so invigorating, so wonderfully amazing, that we are all moving forward at a greater speed than we ever could have achieved alone.

Not to say that I work with anyone when I’m writing my books. I write the first draft on my own, using my own ideas. But then I get people to read it, to comment on it, to let me know what they think. Then I go back to it, and see if I agree. At the moment, for me, the place where I most value that help from my group has been in the way they’ve encouraged me to try different methods for writing (which have enabled me to write more) and the encouragement and knowledge they have given with regards to the business of publishing a book.

So my advice for almost any project, but particularly in writing, is to find some writing buddies who you can trust, so you can encourage each other when you’re down, and celebrate with together when things are on the up. Life’s better with friends.
About the author:

I’ve always loved books, and the stories they bring to life in my head. I’ve always had an overactive imagination as well, and distinctly remember sitting at the base of the big oak tree at school when I was a kid, building houses for the fairies, telling their stories as I went.

Born and raised in New Zealand, I have also lived in the UK, US, and Denmark. I love to meet new people; it’s a fantastic way to gain exposure to new ideas and cultures and, of course, to get story ideas.

For the last ten years I’ve been a magazine writer, and currently I get to write about innovative and cutting-edge research for a tertiary institution in New Zealand. It’s an inspiring job, talking to people about their passion, and I try to tell their stories in the best possible way.

I live in a secluded haven amongst the trees in Auckland with my lovely husband and cheeky three-year-old daughter. I enjoy yoga, although I’m not very bendy, and karate, although I don’t like the idea of hitting anyone. It’s about pushing my boundaries, and both those activities are physical, in a way that my work as a writer isn’t.

I’ve worked as a camp counsellor, a waitress, a checkout girl, a citizenship officer and an editor. But none of those jobs compares to being able to call myself a writer.

When Brig is hired to fortify Cameron’s defenses, her perspective on life is put to test the instant she meets the dazzling prince. The last thing she needs is the distraction of white-hot lust when one-step in the wrong direction could mean death for both of them.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

It never ceases to amaze me how Atwood tells such a complete story in such a short page count. This exciting, quick novella takes you on quite the adventure. Atwood combines a fairy tale romance with the best of the futuristic world that we’ve come to know and love through this intriguing series. This world is brought to light in a vivid, in your face manner that leaves you breathless.

The main characters in this novel are quite intriguing. Neither of the main characters are quite what they appear. As a reader you get to know them as they get to know each other. I enjoy the fact that Atwood develops both the good and the bad aspects of their characters. I also appreciate the fact that Atwood delves a bit further into what it means to be a Huntress for the Monroe sisters. It puts a few things in context and makes these women all the more fierce and loveable.

As a whole, this was my favourite novel in the trilogy. It was a brilliant ending & had some remarkable characters. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys some Sci-Fi action.

The Wilde One by Savannah Young & Author Interview

Let's get to know author Savannah Young a bit better,
then we'll find out more about her latest release.

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I live in Florence, Arizona, which is a small town outside Phoenix. I live with my husband and our two bloodhounds. I’m a university professor as well as a writer.

Q ~ If you could be any animal, which would you be and why?

I think I’d want to be a puppy. Most people love puppies.

Q ~ What’s one habit that you have that you’d like to break?

I don’t have many bad habits. I write every day but that’s not a habit I want to stop!

Q ~ What is your favourite genre to read? To write?

My favorite genre to read and write is contemporary romance.

Q ~ How did you begin writing professionally?

I’m also a produced playwright and award-winning/optioned screenwriter. I wrote stage plays before I began writing novels.

Q ~ Who are your biggest supporters in your writing?

My husband and my mom are my biggest supporters. I’m also fortunate to have a lot of friends and readers who support my work.

Q ~ Do you have any ‘writing rituals’ that you always follow?

I get up every morning between 4:30 am and 5:00 am and write for a few hours. I never skip writing in the morning.

Q ~ When you write, do you try to reach a specific word count or simply write until you are done?

I try to write between 1500 and 2000 words every day. I do stop writing when I have to get ready for work.

Q ~ What inspired you to write this series?

I was tired of reading about rock stars and billionaires. I wanted to read about regular guys who hang out at the local bar on Friday nights, drive Pickup trucks and listen to country music. I decided to write what I wanted to read!

Q ~ What can we expect from the rest of the Old Town Country Romance series?

There are two more brothers (Hunter and Jake) and they each have their own books. The last two books in the series will be released this summer. I am also considering a “spin off” series that will take place at the Tawnee Mountain Resort, which is introduced in the first four books.

Q ~ Do you have a favourite character in your novels? Is this individual based on someone in your life?

So far, my favorite character in the series is Tucker Wilde. He’s not based on anyone in my life but he is based on reading I’ve done on troops returning from the Middle East who are dealing with all kinds of physical, mental and emotional issues as a result of their service.

Q ~ You write under multiple pen names. Can you tells a bit about they why’s and how’s of this?

My plan wasn’t to write under multiple pen names. It just kind of happened. I wanted to make use of different pen names to differentiate different “brands” of romance novels. My Dakota Madison novels are mostly New Adult romances that also deal with social issues. The focus of my Savannah Young books is the Old Town Country Romance series. I like to refer to them as Hick Lit. They’re realistic romances about regular guys. I’m also in the process of completing a paranormal/science fiction romance series for Young Adults. Those books are written as Cheyenne Nicholson Kelly. I’m also going to be releasing some longer New Adult romance novels under the pen name Sierra Avalon.

Q~ If you could give some advice to those who want to write professionally, what would it be?

Write every day without fail. Get into the habit of writing and don’t let yourself down. Also read as much as you write.

THE WILDE ONE is the second novel in the spicy contemporary romance series about four sexy brothers, their small-town bar and their local country band. Each novel in the OLD TOWN COUNTRY ROMANCE series can be read as a STAND ALONE NOVEL or as part of the SERIES.

FOUR WILDE BROTHERS...ONE WILDE COUNTRY BAND

Tucker Wilde joined the United States Army right out of high school and was injured in Iraq. But more than just his leg was shattered in the Middle East. The war also crushed his spirit and damaged his soul. When a strange couple arrives at his family’s bar, Haymakers, Tucker can see signs of mental and emotional abuse and is immediately drawn to the lovely but fragile girl seated at his bar.

Gracie Parker has been a victim of abuse her entire life. When her boyfriend, Dex, beats her in the parking lot of Haymakers and abandons her, it’s almost too much for the nineteen-year-old to bear. That is until Tucker appears like a warrior knight from the darkness to save her.

Tucker and Gracie are two broken people who are immediately drawn together. But their relationship and even their very lives are threatened by Dex who will stop at nothing to get Gracie back.

If you like your trucks loud, your beer cold and your men hot...you'll love THE WILDE ONE.

Excerpt:

“You look different,” Savage says, then downs the last of his pint of ale.

“Different how?” I prod even though I have an idea what he’s going to say. I look more normal. Like I fit into society rather than looking like an outcast.

Savage shrugs. He’s never been a person of many words. We’re like two peas in a pod that way. Even though he rarely says very much, with just one sideways glance Savage can have the biggest and meanest guys on the planet shaking in their cowboy boots.

People say that about me too.

“Do you want another?” I ask, even though I can guess his response. Savage always orders two pints and drinks them at the far corner of the bar. There are worse ways of coping with the past than drinking a few beers every night before he goes home to an empty apartment. I should know. I’m a master of poor coping skills.

“Hit me,” Savage says.

I pour him another pint and take away the empty.

“You look good.”

I’m surprised by the compliment. I’d never use the word good to describe anything about me. But I do look better than I have since I got back from Iraq.

“Drink your beer,” I tell him because I’m not in the mood to explain what’s been going on in my life.

Savage was in Iraq about the same time I was and he’s the closest thing I’ve got to a friend. I’m not one for relationships. Life is too short and relationships are too painful. When you get close to someone, you usually just end up getting hurt.

But like me, Savage isn’t the type of guy who gets too close to people. The most obvious reason is the way he looks: he’s big and scary. Also just like me.

Savage and I lift weights together, and in a fight it would be a close match. Not that either of us would ever start a fight but we would definitely end one if we had to.

It’s a weeknight and the bar is almost deserted except for a few of the regulars. That’s why I’m surprised when I see a couple I don’t recognize walk in and look around. The guy’s wearing all leather and carrying two helmets, so he’s obviously a biker. He looks about my height, six feet two inches and he’s big. The girl looks tiny standing next to him. She’s the definition of the word waif. She looks like a strong wind could pick her up and blow her away. Not a good thing in Old Town where it’s windy most of the time.

The most interesting thing about her, though, is her coloring. I’ve never seen someone so fair in my life. I’m the only blond in my family but I’m not even close to this girl. Her long hair is so light it’s practically white. And her skin is the color of milk. She looks like a princess who just stepped out of a fairytale, as corny as that sounds.

I can’t help but notice that she doesn’t look like she wants to be here. Or maybe she doesn’t want to be with the guy. It’s hard to tell. But she doesn’t look happy. If anything, she looks scared.

As the couple steps closer to the bar, I can see the girl is shaking. I’m not sure whether she’s shaking because she’s scared, or because it’s January and it’s freezing outside and she’s wearing a tiny spring jacket that barely fits. It almost looks like a jacket for a kid it’s so small on her. Not that she’s much bigger than a kid herself.

What kind of an asshole wears a thick leather jacket while he lets his girl freeze? I’m really not liking this guy at all. And when I see him grab her by the elbow, so roughly she almost comes off the floor, I can feel every hair on my body stand at attention.

Is it possible to hate a guy I don’t even know?

My Review:

What a way to be brought back to Old Town. Young develops this small town with a flourish that makes you feel like you were there. She also takes an exciting story and draws her readers right into it. I also love the epilogue. Young gives a sneak peek into the future without jumping too far ahead. She lets you know that there is a future without it being set in stone.

Many authors can make you feel for their characters or feel what their characters are feeling, but Young takes it to an entirely new level with this one. She slowly and subtly develops her characters in such a manner that they become part of your life. Their past is your past. By creating two main characters who are ‘broken’, irreparably so in some ways, but who fight for themselves and each other you feel drawn to them. She also switched perspectives between them showing you not only what is happening but how they feel about it. The way that Young writes allows you to feel their sorrow and pain, their joy and hope on a level unparalleled.

Overall this was a fantastic read that I raced through in a single sitting. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others and will definitely be reading more by this brilliant author in the future.

The Fox's Quest by Anna Frost

Title:  The Fox's Quest
Series: Kitsune Trilogy #2
Author:  Anna Frost
Published:  March 1st 2013 by Musa Publishing
Length:  250pgs
Format:  ecopy
Genre:  YA GLTB Fantasy
Shelf:  review
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Trying to save his clan's shapeshifting powers might just lead Akakiba to lose his own.

The Fox clan is on the verge of extinction, their magic all but gone, but all hope is not lost. Akakiba and Yuki have found a mysterious object that seems to be draining magic from the world. If they can destroy this object, it might return strength to the clan.

The problem is, they don't know who created this object or what those mysterious individuals might do to get it back.

My Review:

This intriguing author combines myth with reality, heartache with conviction, and battle with adventure to create a uniquely captivating novel. The emotions that shine through the pages of this novel are so genuine that you can’t help but feel them yourself. I love the mythology behind this tale. It is such a unique way to look at things. The symbolism in this novel is also quite intriguing. The manifestation of human desires & hate in the physical & natural world serve to highlight the underlying message of the story.

Frost has created characters as real as the world around them. It is so easy to visualize and connect with them. You can find a spark of worth even in the most despicable of her characters. There are also character flaws in the most honourable. This realism in all of her characters makes them that much easier to identify with. I especially enjoyed the demon with a conscience. He may have been a secondary character, but he was definitely a unique change of pace.

As a whole this was an emotionally provocative and culturally provocative novel that kept my attention throughout. I couldn’t stop thinking about this novel. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys works of fiction based in cultural mythology but would suggest reading the series in order. I also cannot wait to read the final instalment in this brilliant trilogy.

Guest Post with author David J. Rollins

Today I'm handing things over to author David J. Rollins. Enjoy & I'll see you guys tomorrow am!

Starting Out As A Writer – 5 Things You Should Know

1) It’s easier to get published than ever before.

2) It’s harder to get read than ever before.

3) Never give up. There is always another way, though you may have to try quite a few “another ways” to find the right one.

4) Rereading sucks, but if we don’t do it, our writing sucks even more.

5) One of the hardest things for new authors is to get reviews. Here are a few tips that may help.
a) Don’t depend on the unpaid professional reviewers that so many websites recommend. If they are interested in your book, those reviewers will still probably take a year, if not more, to post their review, because they are so backlogged.

b) Book Blog Tours are a great way to get exposure and reviews.
c) Some Book Blog Tour companies offer packages where they only obtain reviews.

d) Run a GoodReads Giveaway to find people who might be interested in reading your book. Then run the Comparison Tool on the entrants who added your book to their To Read list and see if their tastes match yours. If you find someone you think might like your book, send them an E-mail offering them a free copy in exchange for a review.

e) When sending a book to a stranger to review, try to gift the book instead of sending them a MOBI file if at all possible. This pertains mainly to the GoodReads readers. It costs you the money to purchase your books, but if you send them a stand-alone MOBI file, they may send it to friends to make it freely available on the internet.

About the author:

David J. Rollins is a paralegal by day, husband by night, and sometimes finds time to write. As a young man, he had had different plans, but that’s the way life works out most of the time.

David has been writing since Seventh Grade. He started with the adventures of Super Pimp and his sidekick Squirt. His hero was Philip K. Dick, who strangely enough did not write about things like Pimps and Squirts. Like any fan, David wanted to follow in his hero’s footsteps. Unlike most fans, he wanted to follow them even after finding out that his hero, at one point in his life, was so poor that he resorted to eating dog food. What David lacked in aspirations, he made up for in determination.

From those humble beginnings, David became the man he is today. He is happier than he ever thought he would be and is living a life he never imagined in his wildest dreams. And that’s the way David’s life worked out. He was and is very lucky.

As further proof of his luck, David has lost every one of the stories about Super Pimp and his sidekick Squirt. He has also never had to eat dog food.

A bit more about The Sales Crime Policeman:

Genre:  Science Fiction / Humor / Romance
Date Published: November 19, 2013

The future is no place to fall in love.

Amazing advances in technology have all but replaced relationships. People can purchase spouses programmed to their individual tastes and desires, anything from an aversion to expensive guilt gifts to perfumed flatulence. Attachments are even available for the more discriminating customers. Anyone can have anyone they want, as long as they don’t want someone who looks like someone else. That’s against the law. It could also make things a little awkward at social events.

Wolver's Gold by Jacqueline Rhoades

Title:  Wolver's Gold
Series:  The Wolvers #5
Author:  Jacqueline Rhoades
Published:  May 20th 2014
Length:  450pgs
Format:  ecopy
Genre:  paranormal romance
Shelf:  bought
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Finding gold where you least expect it…

Lone wolf and Special Investigator for the ubiquitous Eugene Begley, Challenger McCall is sent to the town of Gold Gulch to take care of a problem that might involve the exposure of the wolver community. For McCall, it’s like stepping back in time - a hundred and fifty years back in time.

Gold Gulch is a tourist attraction where the wolvers take their work so seriously, they continue their Victorian lives long after the tourists have gone home. Much like their 19th century counterparts, the women are overworked and underpaid.

Rachel Kincaid is one such woman. Exercising the only power she holds, she has become a wolver oddity; a spinster who refuses to mate. Why would she, when she already has to take care of the short-staffed hotel, its restaurant and her ne’er-do-well father? Angry and bitter, Rachel decides she deserves a better hand than the one she’s been dealt and finds herself drawn to the handsome new sheriff, Challenger McCall. Why shouldn’t she, for once in her life, enjoy the same freedom as the Soiled Doves on the hill?

Things get complicated when Rachel's wolf awakens after a long sleep and the town's women seem to awaken along with it. Papa's gambling debts leave them on the brink; the pack is at risk; and the women rebel. Oh, and don't forget the murders. If ever a pack needed rescuing, Gold Gulch is it, but as the girls up at Daisy's Bouquet point out, - A smart woman needs to look after herself!

My Review:

What an unforgettable tale. Rhoades combines the Old West with modernity and throws in some Wolvers to balance it all out. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the world of the Wolvers branches out a little bit with this one while remaining true to its roots. She takes the concept of Wolvers that we’ve come to love and turns it on its head, giving her readers a unique experience that, although following suit from the rest of the series, definitely stands out in the best of ways. Mystery and suspense combine with underhanded city officials to make this a story that you won’t be able to put down.

The characters in this novel make the enthralling story even more captivating. I won’t say too much or it’ll ruin the surprise but the main characters are right up there with my all-time favourite characters from Rhoades. Everyone in this novel is so well and naturally developed that they aren’t simply believable; they become real for the reader. The clash of time periods and ways of life, without the necessity of time travel, makes for some interesting moments as well. And perhaps we will get to revisit some of these characters again in the future. One can definitely hope so anyways.

Overall this was a phenomenal novel that can be read as part of Rhoades’ Wolvers series or as a standalone. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance with some supernatural on the side.

Chad's Chance by Elley Arden

Title:  Chad's Chance
Series:  Emerald Springs Legacy #3
Author:  Elley Arden
Published:  April 7th 2014 by Crimson Romance
Length:  186pgs
Format:  ecopy
Genre:  contemporary romance
Shelf:  review
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Meet Chad, the third of five unforgettable characters in the Emerald Springs Legacy.

Life in the small town of Emerald Springs, Washington, is anything but slow and peaceful. An old feud between former business partners Whitman and Sanders keeps competition on a high burner, fueling resentment, renewing rivalries … and love. Now someone is trying to bring down Emerald Tea Farm, and it’s up to both families to protect their future while still wrangling over the past.

Chad Whitman loves his family, but he’s not entirely sure he shares their responsible, deliberate outlook on life. Where’s the excitement and passion in that? Running the family diner has been moderately fulfilling, but with his father retiring from the tea farming business, he needs to get a direction.

After being unfairly fired from her dream job, Jen Chavez picks up her worst nightmare in the parking lot—a rich guy she thought was just another pretty face. She has no intention of turning out like her mother, latching on to wealthy men for self-worth and survival. She doesn’t need a man. She needs a job.

Chad decides turning the diner into a microbrewery will provide the excitement his life lacks, and he knows just the person to help him with the job. But hiring Jen as a consultant to the project has its drawbacks. He has a reputation for messing around with the wrong women, and his family is watching his every move. As days pass, his desire to open a top-notch microbrewery is matched only by his desire for Jen. Can they overcome their backgrounds to make this microbrewery a dream big enough for both of them?

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Being a lover of craft beers this novel naturally drew me to it, but it was oh so much more than that. I couldn’t put this one down even for a second. I absolutely love Arden’s voice. It is so inviting that you can’t help but get wrapped up in the tale. Arden takes the world of Emerald Springs and allows it to explode through her intimate storytelling and wildly imaginative turns of phrase. I really feel like I’ve been to Emerald Springs now. Arden’s descriptions are so intricate and vivid that, as a reader, you can picture it all easily.
I love how the novels in this series fit together even though they’re written by different authors. Although written from the perspective of each individual author, the various novels meld together into a coherent whole, allowing you to follow from one to the next, getting to know the entire family quite well.

Character development in this novel is phenomenal. Everyone is well and individually developed in a well-rounded way, without necessarily being a well-rounded individual. It leads to a uniquely diverse cast of characters that really draws you in. It also highlights the main characters quite uniquely. I really enjoyed the whirlwind romance they lived, especially since they still thought out the pros and cons. And what a natural, unpretentious proposal. I’m in love.

The Inquisitor by R.J. Blain

Length:  467pgs
Format:  ecopy
Genre:  urban fantasy

Rating:  ★★★★★

Blurb:
When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fiancee at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expects is to be accused of murder. She has to find the killer and quick, or she'll be put to death for the crimes she didn't commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.

On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.

There's only one problem: One of the deaths has struck too close to home, and Allison's desire for self-preservation may very well transform into a quest for vengeance...

Excerpt:

“I can’t believe you brought me to New York on today of all days.” I nodded my head at the park, but taking in the entirety of the city in a single gesture. Even in the relative peace of the park, I could hear the bustle, the honk of horns, and the noise of the restless cityscape. Atlanta wasn’t much different downtown, but at least it was home.

“Oh, come off it, Allison. You like Halloween.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Maybe a little. I still can’t believe you brought me here, though.”

“Anyway, you owe me,” he said before clucking his tongue.

I winced. He had me dead to rights, and I knew it. Mark gathered favors and cashed them in like currency. Resisting was futile. “Rub it in my face, why don’t you?”

“Of course I will. Another time. I’m enjoying myself way too much right now. You’re mine for three whole days, like it or not.”

“I’m doomed,” I groaned.

He laughed.

I didn’t have the courage to tell him I meant it. It was bad enough it was Samhain. The full moon would reach its zenith after nightfall.

If I wasn’t careful, I was going to pop a tail for real. That’d surprise him. It’d also get me killed. I doubted the NYPD would appreciate a wolf running loose in the center of their city.

“Seriously, Mark. What’s so important that you had to fly me in from Atlanta? I do have a job, you know. I’d even like to keep it.”

“You’re owed three weeks, and at the rate you’re going, they’re probably getting ready to force you to take the time off. The way I see it, I’ve done you a favor.”

“Mark,” I growled.

“Okay, fine. It’s my mom. I told her I had a girlfriend so she’d shut up about me getting married for a while. She wants to meet her. To meet you.”

I broke into a brisk walk, cutting across the grass towards one of the other paths through the park. With luck, he’d get grass stains on his pretty, blue business suit. “You brought me to New York to dress up as your girlfriend for Halloween?”

I guess it really was going to be a night for wearing masks and pretending to be the impossible.

If I had a mother, I’m sure she would’ve been proud. I didn’t cuss, scream, or pitch a fit. I did keep walking without checking if Mark kept pace with me.

He did. “Come on, Allison. I’ll make it up to you, I swear.”

“A Halloween party with your mother, Mark? Have you lost your mind? She’s never going to believe we’re a couple, for one. Two, you live in New York City. I live in Atlanta. You know, that place you flew me in from? She’s got no reason to believe us.”

“I might have told her that you are an old college friend, and we’d been seeing each other on and off since we got our degrees. It’s even true! Just not for the reasons she thinks. Come on, Allison. It’s only for one night. And you’ll save me from marrying a woman I’ve never met.”

I sighed. “Seriously? Did your mother have you betrothed or something? That’s so two hundred years ago. At least you had the decency to book me into a good hotel. How did you manage a room at the Plaza on such short notice?” Using my brown bangs as a shield, I stared at my friend. He was grinning wolfishly.

“Who said it was on short notice? I had our room booked six months ago.”

I tripped over my own feet. A startled cry worked its way out of my throat. Mark’s arm slapped against my chest as he caught me. With a low grunt, he hauled me upright.

“Careful.”

My face burned. “Sorry.” I drew a deep breath. Killing Mark in Central Park wouldn’t work — not during the daytime. There’d be too many witnesses. “Our room?”

“We’re twenty five. We’re young, healthy adults. There’s no way my mom will believe we’re a couple if we don’t share a room,” he replied.

“You have a perfectly nice condo, Mark. I’ve seen it. Why not invite me there instead of booking us a room in one of New York’s more expensive hotels?”

“Wait until you see the room,” Mark said. Then he leered at me.

Oh God. I closed my eyes, stood straight, and once again shoved my hands into my back pockets. No tail. That was a start. I counted to ten. Then I counted to ten again.

When that didn’t calm me down enough, I systematically considered all of Mark’s banking accounts I could probably hack my way into, calculating how much I could siphon off without him noticing. I wouldn’t do it, but the figure made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

When I managed to quell my urge to throttle my friend, I opened my eyes and glared at him. “You got a honeymoon suite, didn’t you?”

“Do try to act surprised when I propose. At least you have an easy line. Don’t worry, we’ll call off the engagement in a month or two.”

“Mark.”

“Yes, dear?”

“Give me a reason I shouldn’t kill you in your sleep tonight.”

“I’m too good looking to kill.”

“No.”

“I pay you exceptionally well for your accounting skills.”

“True, but no.”

“You like me?” His voice wavered, and I had to work to smother my grin.

“You sound so confident,” I murmured. “Fine. I like you. A little. I’ll do it, but you, dear Mark, will owe me.”

Mark’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. “You wouldn’t really try to kill me, would you?”

I grabbed hold of his tie and yanked down so I could look him in the eye. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. “I wouldn’t bet your life on it, if I were you.”

The little color he did have fled from his face. I let him go and resumed walking across the park, whistling a merry tune.

My Review:

This novel was definitely not what I expected. It was fathoms more than that. From the moment I picked it up I couldn’t put it down again. The story itself is extremely original. Blain combines the known supernatural world with that of her own creation to create a positively sinful experience for her readers. The storyline is a rollercoaster that keeps you on your toes and guessing. At the same time, you are drawn further and further into this exceptional tale. This is definitely my favourite tale from Blain thus far.

And what unwaveringly unique characters. As a reader you can’t help but fall for them from the get-go. I really appreciate the fact that Blain doesn’t take a ‘PR’ view of weres. They are hardcore, bad-to-the-genetics individuals. Each member of this phenomenal cast is developed in and of their own right, creating an unforgettable cast in this urban fantasy, paranormal world.

As a whole, Blain brings this world to light in an incomparably vivid manner. I cannot wait to delve further into this world (and to revisit this instalment as well). I’d highly recommend this novel to any and all who enjoy the supernatural.

About the author:

RJ Blain suffers from a Moleskine journal obsession, a pen fixation, and a terrible tendency to pun without warning.

When she isn't playing pretend, she likes to think she's a cartographer and a sumi-e painter. In reality, she herds cats and a husband. She also has a tendency to play MMOs and other computer games.

In her spare time, she daydreams about being a spy. Should that fail, her contingency plan involves tying her best of enemies to spinning wheels and quoting James Bond villains until she is satisfied.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Lexine Monroe has spent her life hiding her true nature from those around her. The preternatural strength and speed that sent her to the top of her field as a criminal enforcer have doomed her to a life alone.

Now, she has to team up with bounty hunter Blane Sebastian, racing against the clock to rescue a kidnapped child due to be sold at auction on the Glory Dome space station.

Six years earlier, Sebastian was Lexine’s teenage crush. Fortunately for her, she is long past the point where a hard body and a sexy smile will put butterflies in her belly.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Each time I pick up a piece of Atwood’s work I come to love her writing more and more. We’ve come to know her for her approachable style and wild imagination, but this is oh, so much more. She mingles suspense with sexual tension in a manner seldom seen. Her vivid descriptions put you firmly in the realm inhabited by her captivating characters. I was also floored at the way that she works real world issues into this unforgettable futuristic tale.

Atwood creates the type of characters that you instinctively connect with and want to see succeed without having to know them very well. I fell in love with Lexy the moment she wanted to prove herself, even though she had nothing to prove. I also enjoyed the fact that the cast wasn’t entirely human. Both futuristic beings and mythical ones join their human counterparts to create an immensely enjoyable whole.

As a whole, this novella was fun, exciting, and out of this world, both literally and figuratively. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone & can’t wait to read the 3rd novella in the trilogy.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Smith is one of those authors who can get the perfect balance of everything in her pages. She combines southern charm with big city curtness, sweet with sexy, suspense with romance, reality with imagination. Everything comes together in a story that you won’t be able to put down. Smith writes suspense and anxiety with such realism that you can’t help but feel it seeping from the pages of the book. Combine this with her down to earth yet extremely picturesque descriptions I feel like I’d stepped into the South myself.

The characters definitely make this novel. Don’t get me wrong, the storyline was phenomenal but the people really make you love them. Right from the first page the author makes it so easy to understand the main character; her thoughts, her feelings, her actions. As a reader you’re able to form a connection with her. I admire the fact that she’s willing to go the extra mile to change the things that she isn’t happy with. The male lead is a bit of an enigma that you can’t help but fall for. He is genuine yet mysterious all at the same time. He’s also an alpha male without it being outright apparent & in your face. Add to this the fantastic supporting cast that make you feel just as welcome as (at least one of) the main characters did and you will feel like this is your new home.

Overall this was a fantastic read that I couldn’t put down for a second. If I had to come up with something that I didn’t enjoy about the novel it would be the fact that it ended and now I have to wait for the next instalment. I’m dying to know how this mystery ends. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense but will warn you that there’s a bit of a cliffhanger.

About the author:

I grew up in Southern California, but as a teenager moved with my family to a small town in Arkansas. It was there that I met my husband, who had also recently moved to the state. Fate brought us both to that same small town and into each other’s lives and it is where we remain today raising our two children and living out our happily ever after. As you can probably tell I’m a hopeless romantic.

I began my writing career in 2009 with the publication of my first novel Love’s Fate, which quickly grew into a romantic series. Since that first day that I sat down to write I haven’t been able to stop. Writing is my passion and has become a necessary part of my life. Sometimes there are stories that just beg to be told.
