This novel is definitely geared towards a YA audience. It was an interesting & intriguing read written in a very intriguing tone. Snow combines stereotypical fantasy jargon with lingo suited to a younger audience. It creates a quite unique feel. That said, I found the dialogue itself a bit odd. It was consistent throughout, but had an odd cadence to it. Snow has adopted what almost seems to be a mix of middle English and modern slang. I found it difficult to wrap my head around.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story. They were all quite well developed. The variety of different characters that Snow presents us with ensures that there is someone for everyone to identify with.
This was an enjoyable, very well put together novel. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those looking to read a good fantasy without a few thousand pages of commitment.
