A brilliantly creative and intricate fantasy that will keep you spell-bound... Rescuing a kingdom could cost him everything-even his life. The ancient House of the Keepers has ruled the Second Kingdom in unbroken succession for seven centuries. Now it's rapidly falling into ruin. Its valiant king has been murdered in battle. Phelan, a treacherous seer, has pitted his will and powers against the kingdom's aging heroine, Lady Morena. The only remaining Keeper prince has been forced to flee the murderous rage of his usurping general while enemy armies march upon the Second Kingdom. Meanwhile, in the war-threatened Outland territory beyond the Great River, young Colin wrestles with other-worldly voices and nightmares that force him to question his sanity. A timely meeting with the exiled Keeper heir provides answers...but will the answers prove more challenging-and deadly-than the questions? And whom can young Colin trust with the gifts he's been given?

My Review:

Snow is a rather visual author, painting this world for an audience that picks up her novel. There is a mythological feel to this tale that is rather intriguing. It meshes with the storyline at hand. This is a well written novel with an approachable cadence. Snow draws you into her fantasy world with her words.

This novel is definitely geared towards a YA audience. It was an interesting & intriguing read written in a very intriguing tone. Snow combines stereotypical fantasy jargon with lingo suited to a younger audience. It creates a quite unique feel. That said, I found the dialogue itself a bit odd. It was consistent throughout, but had an odd cadence to it. Snow has adopted what almost seems to be a mix of middle English and modern slang. I found it difficult to wrap my head around.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story. They were all quite well developed. The variety of different characters that Snow presents us with ensures that there is someone for everyone to identify with.

This was an enjoyable, very well put together novel. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those looking to read a good fantasy without a few thousand pages of commitment.
