Synopsis from Goodreads:

The latest release in the high fantasy series which has drawn comparisons to Kushiel's Dart, Graceling, and the epic world of Tamora Pierce.

Ciardis Weathervane fought for the living dead and won. But worse than taking on a mass murderer, was her discovery that she had been deceived by her friends. Now she needs to not only fight a war in the North and survive, but also decide where she stands in the midst of competing sides.

A threat to all she holds dear lies in the North and her heart is not the only thing she might lose. A massive army awaits in the mountain pass, surging closer to the gates of the southern lands. Nothing the Algardis army has done so far has dissuaded their march forward and Ciardis finds out that her powers to enhance are needed now more than ever.

As she faces her greatest fears on the battlefields and her heart is torn between her love of Sebastian and loyalty to her family, Ciardis must choose her fate carefully. For in her path, lies the destiny of the empire.

This third novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Transfer.

My Review:

I keep falling further and further in love with this series with each new novel. Edun is an artistically descriptive author. She continues to weave this enchanting world through sublime descriptions. Her fantastic storytelling keeps her readers entranced throughout. She intertwines moments of intrigue with breathtakingly intense battle scenes into an unforgettable whole. This was definitely a fluid, fast paced read that I couldn’t put down.

Ciardis and Sebastian are really coming into their own with this instalment. You can see them beginning to grow up and take responsibility for things. Watching them interact with each other, and the other characters in this story, really let you get to know them on an intimate level. I also really enjoy the many new character that Edun introduces us to throughout. We get to meet these characters gradually, getting to know them as the main characters do, allowing for a natural flow that doesn’t disrupt the storyline.

As a whole this was a phenomenal addition to the series. Edun has created a completely magical world, and not simply because many of her characters are imbued with magic. You can feel the magic leaching from the story and into yourself as you read.
