Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Radcliffe jumps right into the story, immersing you in the main character’s aura and her life right from the very first sentence. Switching perspectives between the two main characters really gives you an insight into the entirety of this story. Radcliffe switches in such a way that it is easy for the reader to keep up while maintaining a hint of mystery. This story is extremely raw and real. There is also a sense of urgency in the here and now sparked by the fact that this novel spends its entirety firmly locked in the present tense.

This author also doesn’t just describe her scenes, but rather uses colours and textures and senses to allow her audience to feel and see them. As a reader, you don’t feel like a member of the audience, but rather a participant who is actively engaged in this story. This isn’t simply a story, but a work of art, weaving the old with the new in a manner unlike any other.

The female lead in this tale has such a vivid imagination that you can’t help but love her. The way that she lets it run wild just heightens the experience. Seeing as part of the story is written from her perspective you get a really good sense of who she is, rather than who she pretends to be for the outside world. Her journey of self-discovery and self-worth is out there for all of us to see, even if those around her don’t. The male lead is equally well developed, although with a different sense about him. Radcliffe’s style of writing switches right along with the switch in perspectives, differentiating between the personalities of the two main characters.

I also found the supporting cast quite captivating. There are a couple that I can’t wait to get to know better, even if they are quite well put together in this novel. At the same time, there are other supporting characters that I can’t help but hate. They are completely developed as individuals, but as shady ones who don’t deserve the time of day. It adds a balance and sense of realism to this novel.

Overall, this was a brilliant tale, written with the same care and intensity as Radcliffe’s other works. This one may just be my favourite yet, and I can’t wait for more.

Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack.

Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

This novel is very personal, right from the start. You’re up close and personal with the main character getting to know her as she gets to know everyone else. Bostic also presents a very well laid out concept of wolves. As a reader you get to know where and when they became a race, how it happened, and the history behind it. It’s quite interesting and left me very intrigued. Bostics descriptions are extremely vivid, to the extent of becoming graphic during any intense scenes. You can’t help but visualise many of the scenes.

I loved the history between the characters. This romance isn’t an all of a sudden type thing. Even if events move quickly between them, nothing is overly rushed because of their past. Bostic’s character development gives you a good idea as to who everyone is and where they came from, without ever becoming overly in depth or skimming the surface. It was a nice balance.

Overall, I loved the premise, but it was just a little too far off centre to completely immerse myself in. The novel started out awesome then completely lost me for a bit with the plot twist that left me saying WTF a few times (which admittedly was very unique, I’ve definitely never seen it before), and then then it ended on a great high.

By the author of the bestselling Escape to New Zealand series--When you wish upon a star . . .

Alec Kincaid has never met the obstacle he couldn’t overcome—or the woman who could resist him. And it’s not going to happen now, not with his star shining more brightly than ever in the high-stakes arena of San Francisco’s software industry.

Desiree Harlin doesn’t believe in fairy tales, and she doesn’t waste time wishing. She’s learned the hard way that dreams don’t come true. And with her reputation and hard-won security on the line, succumbing to temptation isn’t an option.

But things aren’t always what they seem. And even stars sometimes fall.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.
Excerpt:

She’d spooned up every bit of the rich broth, the chunks of beef and vegetables, had dipped a second and then a third piece of bread in olive oil. Alec had watched it all without comment, while dispatching his own dinner with an alacrity that confirmed to Desiree that he really hadn’t had dinner yet tonight.

And when they’d finished, he’d insisted, together with Giuseppe—of course the waiter’s name was Giuseppe, because this wasn’t romantic enough, the white tablecloth and the single red rose and the candle and the worn brick against her shoulder—he’d insisted that she order cannoli for dessert.

“Just one,” he coaxed. “If you don’t want it, you don’t have to eat a single bite. But I think you need to taste whipped cream tonight.”

“Don’t you think she needs some whipped cream?” he demanded of the waiter, who smiled back at him, sensing, Desiree thought through a satisfied haze of red wine, succulent beef, and way too much potent testosterone, a truly magnificent tip.

“Definitely, the signorina needs whipped cream,” Giuseppe agreed. “And we have the best.”

She wasn’t sure how you had better whipped cream than anyone else, but when the dessert arrived, she had to concede that this was the best.

Amaretto, one still-sane corner of her practical brain suggested, but that sensible voice was drowned out, oh so rapidly, by the sensation on her tongue, the silky smoothness of cream, the almond sweetness of the liqueur, the delicate drift of pastry and the deep dark pleasure of chocolate. And Alec, watching her as she allowed the rich concoction to drift between her lips, over her tongue, down her throat. Watching her, enjoying the sight of her enjoying herself, as if it were his tongue. His throat.

By the time he’d slapped a hand against the door of the cab that had again been waiting when they’d stepped out of the restaurant’s front door, leaped back onto the sidewalk and raised that same hand in farewell, she’d been so lost in fatigue, wine, and lust that she could only sit back against the scarred leather and thank heaven that she hadn’t actually kissed him. Or begged him.

My Review:

This is an intricately written novel by an adult for adults. James melds the workforce with the world outside the workplace to create a masterpiece you won’t be able to put down. That said, at the beginning the story flitted around so much between the different aspects of everyday life for the two main characters that it was a bit hard to get into. This straightened out quickly and then I could barely put it down.

The chapter titles instead of numbers actually add to the story. They add a sense of foreboding without giving anything major away. James references things that many may not recognize but that definitely add to the storyline if you do. I mean, really, anyone who can reference Star Wars is a star in my books. Allusion and metaphor definitely make their play in this novel, drawing you further and further into the mural that James paints for her audience.

The characters in this novel are quite well developed. At the same time, they aren’t over developed. You get to know everyone as real people. You also get to know them as you would if you were in the same situation.

This charismatic novel will keep you captivated from cover to cover, you’ll enjoy it at the beginning and love it at the ending. It is a life changing story that really makes you think. I’d definitely read more by this intriguing author.

Guest post with author Stacey D. Atkinson

Today I'd like to welcome Stacey D. Atkinson to Pure Jonel.
Stacey is the author of Stuck.

Let's see what she has to say to us today!

Inside Odette’s World: 5 Things about Odette Leblanc’s character that make us root for her

As the author of Stuck, my characters are very near and dear to my heart. So when it comes to the protagonist, Odette Leblanc, you can be sure that her character development was well thought out and her quirks were intentional in so many ways. I thought I’d use this guest post as an opportunity to share with you some insights into how Odette came to be, and what it is about her that makes people want to root for her.

1. Odette has a strong Acadian identity, making her a unique and interesting character for many readers. From her Acadian name to her French expressions to the details of her life in the small fishing village of Pointe-du-Chêne, she comes across as charming and believable. Readers also become invested in her small town, especially when they find out it’s a real place in southeastern New Brunswick (Canada).

2. Odette’s father is long gone and her mother is a nasty, bingo-addicted woman who makes life complicated for everyone. Yet somehow Odette prevails through it all, mostly because she’s driven by the need to protect her younger sister, Sophie. In a way, Odette’s journey reads like a Cinderella story and you can’t help but root for the underdog.

3. Odette tells a lie in the book and it seems to grow as the story progresses. While lying is not normally a redeeming quality in a lead character, readers start to empathize with Odette when they realize that the only reason why she lied is because of a misunderstanding and her lack of self-confidence. Odette truly feels guilty about it all and readers anxiously wait for her to resolve the conflicts she’s created.

4. Readers go on a journey with Odette as she builds up her confidence. Odette holds on to a fear that she’s not good enough to deserve the attention of Henri, a wealthy sailor, and it makes us want to reach into the book and shake some sense into her. Also, at the end of the book, Odette is faced with a life-altering decision for which she’ll need all the courage she can find to take a leap of faith. In many ways, Stuck is a book of self-discovery and triumph against all odds.

5. And finally, readers love Odette because she is kind and giving and she loves her family and friends—just like someone we’d like to be friends with. She also has a strong empathy for her co-workers, which helps them get through their own personal turmoil.

Creating memorable characters is hard to do. As a writer, I have to get outside of my own head and step into the head of my characters. I can’t rely on my own expressions and mannerisms; I have to create new ones that are authentic to the character I’m creating. I have to dig down deep and think about what it would really feel like to be that character navigating a particular situation. For example, what would I say if I lacked confidence in myself but a handsome, rich sailor started flirting with me and asked me on a date? I’d probably get nervous, stutter and say something stupid, as does Odette, which is why we love her so much. Even though she’s the star in a fiction novel, she’s very real and down-to-earth in so many ways, especially to me.

About Stacey:

I was born and raised in rural Taylor Village, New Brunswick (Canada), where I lived with my mother and sister in an old farmhouse with a pack of cats and acres of land for roaming. I later moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to attend art college and where I met my husband, David. We now live in Ottawa, Ontario, with frequent trips home to the Maritimes.

I first fell in love with words as a songwriter. I grew up playing guitar and later studied piano, which became the backdrop for my writing. I also used to write short stories and remember having a deep conversation with my grade four English teacher about the rigid rules of grammar at the time and how I absolutely had to break them because I needed to start a sentence with the word 'and'.

I love to write stories about strong female characters in memorable settings along the East Coast of Canada. My first book Stuck is a coming-of-age story about an Acadian woman growing up in a small fishing village in New Brunswick. My next project, Letters from Labrador, will be released in 2014 and tells the story of young British nurses working in the beautiful yet unpredictable northern coast of Labrador, Newfoundland. www.staceydatkinson.com

A bit more about Stuck:

Odette Leblanc is promoted to night-shift supervisor at the local convenience store, but at the age of twenty-three, she already feels like her life has become a predictable routine. That is, until she meets a mysterious doryman and his cat on the beach, followed by an unexpected run-in with an American sailor. Each man will undeniably change the course of her life, and so will the selfish actions of her bingo-addicted mother, an impressionable younger sister, and a team of damaged co-workers. Their stories weave together only to unravel in a mess of lies, betrayal, and missed opportunity that will leave Odette to face an uncertain future.

Set in the picturesque Acadian fishing village of Pointe-du-Chêne, New Brunswick (Canada), Stuck is an emotional journey about redefining what’s important in life and staying true to yourself.

They say it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Finn McGraw disagrees.

He was just seventeen when he had a torrid summer affair with the girl who stole his heart—and then inexplicably turned on him. Finn may have moved on with his life, but he’s never forgotten her.

Now, ten years later, he’s got more than his lost love to worry about. A horrific accident turns his life upside down, resurrecting the ghosts of his long-dead family and taking the lives of the few people he has left.

Finn always believed his estranged brother was responsible for the fire that killed their family—but an unexpected inheritance with a mystery attached throws everything he knows into doubt.

And on top of that, the beguiling daughter of his wealthy employer has secrets of her own. But the closer he gets, the harder she pushes him away.

The Seacrest is a story of intrigue and betrayal, of secrets and second chances—and above all, of a love that never dies.

My Review:

This novel is emotionally charged. Lazar maintains a very personal contact with his audience through his writing. He keeps you coming back for more, while you experience each and every feeling and event right alongside the main character. Lazar writes about the type of love that you want. The type of love that you don’t mind going through hell and back to get.

Lazar melds the past with the present in this remarkable tale. By flipping between the two in ‘flashback mode’ we get the full experience of the main character’s love life. You can feel life coming around in a full circle. As a reader, you feel like it’s something that’s happened to you. Not necessarily the exact storyline, but the past haunting your present. The writing style also changes with the flashbacks. You can feel the difference between the teen and the adult.

Also, telling the story from the male POV adds an element of calm and realism. You get all the romance without the craziness, and cars definitely make a play in the story. I also have to thank Lazar for his honesty and accuracy in this novel. His horses are real horses, not some idealized version thereof. I really appreciated seeing an author take the time and effort to do this. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in this story without worry.

This is one of those stories you can’t put down. I was holding on to it like a lifeline. Lazar is a brilliant author who evokes all of your emotions and makes the best and the worst of situations shine.

Hunter's Assessment by Karyn Pearson

Title:  Hunter's Assessment
Author:  Karyn Pearson
Series:  Arcturian Bloodlines
Published:  November 13th 2013 by Distinguished Press
Page Count:  12
Genre:  YA Paranormal
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Book Blurb:

After years of training, they should have been ready for this. It was supposed to be a simple mission: eliminate the vampires and acquire the intel they’re guarding.

Shane Kantor figured that this hunter’s assessment would be like every other test the Hunter’s Society had thrown at him and his squad. But he was wrong. Now Shane might just lose everything: his life, his legacy, and worst of all, her.

Excerpt:

“Welcome, children, to the Society,” The voice of Nadia Kantor, Grandmaster and leader of the Hunter’s Society, said, addressing her audience—two dozen children or so, each of them soon-to-be future vampire hunters.

Shane Kantor looked upward, his eyes immediately locking onto a raised platform in the center of the room where his mother stood, tall and blonde, her mere presence emanating power and commanding the room’s attention. As if sensing his stare, Nadia glanced at him, meeting her son’s eyes, the slightest trace of a grin curving her lips.

“You are all here because we share common ancestors,” Nadia continued. “You are all descendants of the great Huntresses of old, the Daughters of Seraphina, the mortal enemies of the Sons of Arcturus, the Elder leaders of the vampire factions, with whom we share an uneasy peace. You, my future Hunters, will maintain the balance between our Society and the vampire’s Syndicate. That is the duty you are charged with from this day forth. It will be your job to eliminate any vampire threat to both yourselves and to the humans that you live to protect! Serve honorably in our founding mother’s name. For Lady Seraphina!”

“For Lady Seraphina,” Shane and the other children chorused.

“As you begin your training within these walls, remember the cause you serve. Know that the trials you will endure will not be in vain. You are about to undertake a difficult journey, but do not fear what lies ahead. Look around you, children. The faces you see in this room, memorize them. The people you see beside you will be your closest allies. Two or three of them may even be part of your squad. One day, you will have to trust these people with your lives.”

Shane turned his head from side to side, now making an effort to study the other faces in the room. His green eyes locked with a pair of wide-eyed chocolate colored ones, evenly-set in the olive-skinned face of a pretty girl with dark brown hair who could be no older than he was. She looked confused, perhaps even a little scared, as she met his gaze. Hoping to comfort her, he smiled reassuringly, only to have her look away as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

Oh well. I tried, he thought as he redirected his attention to his mother just in time to be dismissed. The others all began to move, heading for the doors on either side of the walls. No doubt they branched off into a maze of corridors and chambers that one could easily find themselves lost in for hours before anyone showed up to help them.

Following their lead, Shane filed out of the room with the other new initiates, vaguely aware of where he was going. His mind was far too busy entertaining other thoughts, like that girl, for instance. Did she only just find out the truth of her own lineage tonight? Had she been living a completely normal life until her parents dropped her off at this strange place, gathered in a room full of twelve-year old kids? Was she afraid of knowing that vampires, the stuff of nightmares, were actually real and it would be her job one day to have to put them down?

He sighed.

Welcome to the Society, indeed.

My Review:

This short story is extremely well written. It’s an exciting, fast paced read. Pearson’s intriguing premise is backed by a solid storyline that you feel connected with. Her understated descriptions highlight the importance of certain events while allowing the audience to picture everything vividly. Pearson has some extremely well developed characters for such a short story. It’s quite interesting to see how they grew up and became who they are.

I was so wrapped up in this story I felt like I’d been there right alongside the story. I fell in love with this world and the characters. This is the perfect lead in to the series. I definitely can’t wait for more & to see what comes next!

The Blacksmith's Son by Rebecca Thomas

Author:  Rebecca Thomas
Published:  November 25th 2013 by Entangled: Flirt

Genre:  Historical Romance

Rating:  ★★★★

Book Blurb:

Captain Quentin Drake returns home after his naval commission ends to find a groom being beaten in the village stables. He refuses to turn a blind eye to the lad's mistreatment and intervenes, taking the lad to his room. Only to discover the boy...is a woman.

After Ally Lockwood witnesses an earl committing murder, she fears for her life. She flees his estate and masquerades as a blacksmith’s male apprentice. Her ruse is up when a handsome stranger tending to her wounds disrobes her. Captain Drake lures Ally into believing she can return to life as a woman, but it may draw the killer back on her trail.

Excerpt:

1835, Liverpool, England

Ally’s steps slowed and she glanced between buildings. Lightning flashed in the distance, temporarily rendering her blind against the black of night. She peered down the street, seeking any signs of movement. Carefully, she set the rifle down to tighten the belt holding up her trousers. She double-checked her cap, making sure no strands of hair fell loose.

After she was positive no one followed her, she picked up her rifle and crept along the stable’s back entrance. An ominous boom of thunder rumbled and a drizzle of rain spit across her cheeks. She paused, lingering in the shadows of the stable, waiting for any sign of people.

She leaned her shoulder against the door, gripping her rifle in one hand and a lantern in the other, and
stepped inside. Wariness grazed her spine as she studied each hinged gate along the dirt walkway. Licking the rainwater from her lips, she gazed into the last stall on the right at the colt.

The young sorrel lay on his side, his body thrashing. Terror blazed in his dark brown eyes. He struggled to stand. His back leg was splinted and wrapped and unable to support his weight. Ally set the lantern down beside the colt with trembling hands. A wave of nausea overcame her. She clutched her stomach and willed her nerves to settle.

A spattering of rain sounded on the roof in a low steady hum. She pressed the cool base of the rifle stock against her cheek and hardened her resolve to do what must be done. The metal from the trigger burned into her finger. Gently, she placed the tip of the barrel against the colt’s temple. The colt’s dark eyes widened.

Time stopped.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered in a raspy puff of breath.

She steadied her hold on the rifle.

The colt looked at her as though he understood, as though he’d already forgiven her.

“I can’t do it.” The rifle slipped from her hands. She fell to her knees and retched.

Defeated, she dropped her chin to her chest and cried. How could anyone let an animal suffer so? She had to take him out of his misery. She had to.

A loud crash at the front stable door jolted Ally from her despair. Footsteps followed the screech of gate hinges.

“You there, boy—” The man pointed a slim finger at her. “What do you think you’re doing?”

Her blood turned cold in a jolt of recognition. She knew that face: Harrison Cross, the Earl of Linford. “M—Milord, I was just attending to this colt.”

“You.” A murderous rage flashed in the depths of his ice blue eyes.

She knew those eyes and she prayed he didn’t recognize her.

My Review:

This story is uniquely set in the time period in question. It both conforms with and goes against the times. Thomas walks a line to make this a very unique novella that keeps you thinking and guessing. I must also say that I never expected the novel to end the way that it did. Thomas’ emotional, hard, and real descriptions set the novella apart from the rest and draw you in to the action and reactions within.

Character development in this novella is restricted primarily to the main characters in the novel. We get to know them as they get to know themselves. Although constrained by a short page count the author does a very good job of developing these characters in all dimensions. The rest of the cast has little development, which works as they aren’t overly involved in the main action. Also, the fact that we know next to nothing about the protagonist in this novel is very beneficial to the storyline. There would be no misunderstanding if we knew him well.

Overall, this was an intriguing, fun read that I quite enjoyed.

The Soul's Mark: Changed by Ashley Stoyanoff

Series:  The Soul's Mark #4
Published:  December 2013 by Ashley Stoyanoff Books
Page Count:  228
Genre:  YA Paranormal Romance
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Ever since college student Amelia Caldwell moved to Willowberg, her life has been in turmoil. But with the evil vampire hunters no longer terrorizing the town, Willowberg is once again peaceful.

With a little help from Mother Nature and a dream for a better future, Mitchell has found himself in a predicament—after eight hundred years of being immortal, he is now a human while his soulmate is a vampire.

Now all Amelia and Mitchell have to do is hide from the world until his body can handle the change. But when Mitchell gets a cold, all hell breaks loose.

With an unexpected resistance rising, and an unexplained deadline from the spirits, Amelia realizes that this is a fight she cannot win alone. One thing is clear, though: to save Mitchell, he needs to change—again. But if he does, what chance does he have of surviving it?

My Review:

This was a very fact paced, enjoyable read. Right at the beginning Stoyanoff gives a good recap of previous novels without ever breaking out of the new, very well laid out, storyline. She also gives this vamp-tastic world one heck of a hilarious twist. There was definitely a comedy of errors going on here for a bit; at the same time Stoyanoff infuses an intensity into this novel that keeps you riveted. As an author, Stoyanoff makes you feel like you’re part of the story instead of just someone reading it. Stoyanoff’s natural yet vivid descriptions continue to set the scene perfectly. She also really makes use of allusion in this instalment to paint an entire mural with her words.

Although Stoyanoff’s characters are all quite well developed coming into this final novel in the series, she takes a bit of a different twist with further development here. Development in this novel has shifted to a more real and personal level. Her characters have become more developed on a very down to earth level here. Confusion and strength of character really shine through now. They are real people, just in vamp-form. Also, even though Mitch and Amelia are still the main characters, the entire cast takes on more major roles in this story to create a ‘main family’ of characters.

I must say that I love Mitchell in this novel. He’s so real and he no longer seems disjointed from reality. In earlier novels in this series Mitchell always seemed stuck in the past, and considering his age that is quite understandable. Now, courtesy of the time he’s spent with Amelia, you can still see his past but he’s living in the present. It’ makes for a very nice change of character which happened quite naturally.

Overall, this was a brilliant wrap up of the series. Parts of this story broke my heart, others put it back together, and others yet just plain made me laugh. Stoyanoff ties up all the loose ends and leaves you with a sense of completion at the end of the novel, even if you do wish that there were more to come so that you could stay in Willowberg forever.

My Review:

This exciting and enchanting novel is very approachably written. Jay follows the basic format of a fantasy tale but he story itself is extremely unique. You can’t help but get caught up in the amazing world that Jay presents to her readers. At times I felt like I was watching a reel, I was so caught up in Jay’s descriptions of each and every scene. Not only that, but this novel is extremely well written and edited, allowing you to flow seamlessly into this world. Jay neither talks up nor down to her audience. Her story balances perfectly in that margin in between. Her very in-depth and intricate plot is told in a very captivating manner. It is gripping even through the battle scenes, which are suspenseful without being gory or dirty.

This novel presents a well-developed cast that is full of interesting individuals who carry the story forward very well. Jay’s unique character names make it easy to remember everyone and who did what. The natural interactions between the characters make everything very easy to relate to. Jay also incorporates some very eloquent dialogue into this story, but it always fits with the characters in question. Although it isn’t the everyday language that one typically encounters it is fluid and enhances the characters in question. It also helps to differentiate between the different classes of the very well defined social structure within this tale, where everyone has their place even if they don’t necessarily accept it fully. Through this, court intrigue makes a play that definitely keeps you wanting more.

Overall, this was a captivating fantasy with just a touch of reality. It’s the perfect escape from the everyday.

My Review:

This novel was intensely real. Every event was not only possible but extremely plausible. As a reader you get caught up in the suspense of the story while rooting for the budding romance. The entire story was written in a realistic yet completely captivating light. Her narrative in natural and fluid, simultaneously filling the reader in and keeping them guessing. Sefer’s descriptions paint a brilliant picture of this Greek isle, combining romanticism with reality to create a phenomenal whole.

The cast of characters in this novel was fantastically developed. Sefer uses a sliding scale of development for each character based on their role in the story. It adds for a very unique feel. I also appreciate how you get to know the male lead as the female lead does. The gradual character development adds an air of mystery to this brilliant alpha male. The female lead was the only real issue that I had with this story. I mean really... How stupid can you be? That said, I also loved her as a lead. She just made a few decisions that had me wanting to smash my head off the wall.

Suspense and intrigue definitely play a role in this intriguing tale with some very romantic vibes. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.

My Review:

Clifton has developed a very imaginative storyline for this captivating tale with some extremely unique concepts. He has also presented a well-developed history and premise for the story. The story itself also has a smooth forward flow that keeps you entertained and fully immersed in the action. At the same time, the pace of the story differs based on the action/events at the time. It really highlights certain elements of the novel and plays with emotions nicely. The chapter titles instead of numbers also really set the mood and tone for each chapter.

I love the character names in this novel. Clifton walks the line between unique fantasy character names and easy to remember (and pronounce) names. It’s the perfect mix. His characters are also well-developed and approachable. Clifton turns a multicultural mix of characters into an interplanetary cast of characters. That said, the cast complements each other creating a well-rounded whole for the story. It is quite a large cast but each individual remains autonomous throughout. Also, the main character is thrust into situations that he could never have imagined and does a good job of growing into his role. Clifton also does an amazing job of portraying this growth in a natural light.

Overall, this is a well thought out and put together story that kept my attention and imagination peaked.

My Review:

This novel is actually more emotionally packed than the first of the series. Derrick tackles difficult subjects head on to create a shocking tale you won’t be able to put down even for a second. The dark undertones that Derrick works into her descriptions add a sense of urgency to this novel. She paints a dark world for her characters to live in, but also shows the cracks where light sets through.

Even though we got to know the main characters quite well in the first novel of this series, we get to know them much more intimately in this one. It’s all in the little details with this novel. You also get to know some of the supporting characters much better. They become more like family than storybook characters.

I love the mix of reality, history, and mythology that Derrick has worked together into this brilliant novel. My last thoughts? GAAAHHH!!! I need more now! I can’t wait for the next instalment in this brilliant series.
