Excerpt:

“What do you mean, you quit? Mr. Sinclair, you just can’t quit.” Margaret “Maggie” Selby put her pen down on the desk. She would not raise her voice. She would not lose control.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Selby, but I got no choice. There’s an opening at the sanitarium in Albany and my Mary, she needs to go right now. The doctors there might be able to help her. We leave on the morning train.”

Maggie took a deep breath and nodded. She understood. She really did, but it didn’t change the fact that she was now in a difficult situation. “Of course, you must go. I know how poor Mary’s health is and any help that can be obtained for her, must be.”

“I wish I could give you some notice, but we just received the letter in yesterday’s post.”

“It’s fine, Mr. Sinclair. I’ll manage.”

He handed her an envelope. “Here are the train tickets.”

“Yes, well, I’ve wanted to see the frontier I’ve been sending my these girls to. I’m simply going to see it sooner than I anticipated.”

“I’m truly sorry, Mrs. Selby.”

Maggie got up, came around the desk and held her hand out to him. “You just take care of Mary. That’s your job now.”

He shook her hand, nodded. Mr. Sinclair put on his hat and wiped his brow with his kerchief before venturing back out into the already hot and sunny morning.

She went to her desk, grabbed Caleb Black’s file, put the closed sign on the door and then went upstairs to her apartment to pack. Her bride, Jenny Talbot would be by in an hour or so to pick up her tickets. Maggie would tell her then that she’d be accompanying her, not Mr. Sinclair. It was just as well. Jenny was nervous as a kitten and Maggie worried about the union, but both Mr. Black and Jenny had been adamant that it take place. If truth be told, Maggie herself was a better match for Mr. Black than Jenny. But she was here to find matches for others, not for herself.

Jenny’s reasoning she understood. Jenny was the oldest of the seven Talbot children. At twenty-two years old, felt she was a burden on her parents even though she worked and helped out with the bills. She hated her job and wanted to get married. Her chances were growing slim. Most men of marriageable age were either already married, old or widowers with hellions for children.

Jenny was a tall, slim girl with pale blue eyes and dark blond hair. Her lips were full, her nose long and straight. Just a plain young woman from a struggling family who wanted a better life. One that the wild frontier might be able to offer.

Mr. Black’s reasoning was less clear. He was successful and wanted children. Maggie had presented him with several other possible candidates, some more attractive, some younger, some older, all of whom he’d rejected. The reasons he gave were weak. Brown hair. Too short. Too fat. Too thin. Too young. Too old. There seemed to be a reason for rejecting every one she sent him.

Finally, he’d settled on Jenny with the proviso that Maggie herself accompanied the girl. She’d agreed, but stated only that Jenny would be accompanied. With her full intention having been to send Mr. Sinclair in her place. Maggie’s time was much more well spent here in New York. Finding clients, assigning candidates that is where her mind, body and commitment lay. Yes, running her business is where she belonged more than on a trip to the wild West. She didn’t feel bad about her decision. Really she didn’t, she told herself over and over. But she was lying. If she were honest, deep down she was afraid to meet Mr. Black. Afraid her image of him would be wrong, but even more afraid it would be right and he really was the man he depicted in his letters.

She shouldn’t have allowed it, the private correspondence, but it had been innocent enough. In the beginning. A simple flirtation with someone she’d never meet. But now, the thought of actually meeting him terrified and thrilled her at the same time. Now she had to go. Maggie released a rather breathless sigh. She blinked repeatedly against the harsh sunlight. So Mr. Black was getting what he’d asked for after all. Much to her dismay.

My Review:

My first thought? Gawds but I love this author’s spin on mail order brides. What a twist! And not only to mail order brides but in the story itself. I never expected this one.

This novel has a very smooth flow that draws you in and is so well written that you’re very content to stay there. Woolf’s descriptions are so natural and real that you can visualize the scenes without trying. They are so intricate that you can taste the meals that the characters are eating, and smell the world around them.

As usual, Woolf has nailed the time period perfectly. I also really appreciate her take on driving horses. Unlike most literature, Woolf doesn’t adopt the status quo but is actually accurate.

The intriguing characters that Woolf presents are extremely well developed for a short novel. You fall in love with them and their situations, both sides of it. I absolutely love the air of superiority that the characters adopt to get out of sticky situations. It seems so natural and real. It really adds to the character building throughout the novel. Each time a character does this you learn something new about them. Woolf also takes the time to develop her supporting cast into individuals that you know, but could see yourself getting to know better. As a reader you become emotionally invested in the lives of all of these amazing individuals.

Overall this was a fantastically unique story that kept me hooked throughout. It gave me a good few giggles and made my heart soar a time or two.

About the author:

Cynthia Woolf was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

She worked her way through college and went to work full time straight after graduation and there was little time to write. Then in 1990 she and two friends started a round robin writing a story about pirates. She found that she missed the writing and kept on with other stories. In 1992 she joined Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America. Unfortunately, the loss of her job demanded she not renew her memberships and her writing stagnated for many years.

In 2001, she saw an ad in the paper for a writers conference being put on by CRW and decided she'd attend. One of her favorite authors, Catherine Coulter, was the keynote speaker. Cynthia was lucky enough to have a seat at Ms. Coulter's table at the luncheon and after talking with her, decided she needed to get back to her writing. She rejoined both CRW and RWA that day and hasn't looked back.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Fall by Cindy Paterson

Title:  Fall
Author:  Cindy Paterson
Series:  The Senses #3
Published:  May 4/13
Page Count: 321
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Shelf: Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

“He’s destroying me—us. I need him like my next breath, yet I’m suffocating.”

An unrequited love that has ripped her to pieces.

Delara has loved Waleron for over a century. Their intense chemistry is sensual, gripping, irresistible. But tragedy struck, and after sixty-one years of believing he was dead, Waleron returns a tortured man. He claims the man she loves is dead, yet the undeniable sexual tension still pulls them together.

“I am no longer the man you love, maitagarri. I am incapable of it.”

Waleron has given his oath to protect the Senses. He will sacrifice everything for them. But there is one Senses he has vowed to protect more than any other—Delara. He will do anything to make certain she is safe, even if it means he must deny her the love they once shared.

She is the hunted.

Delara’s life is in jeopardy and Waleron will do anything to protect her. But he never suspected that Xamien, the man he brings to help protect her is way more important to her than he ever knew.

Torn between two men and hunted by another, Delara must fight her hardest battle—herself.

FALL can be read as a stand-alone, however it is highly recommended to read the 1st two books to completely understand the love story.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

This novel has an intensity to it that comes from more than just the action. Readers will become completely invested in this novel both intellectually and emotionally. Paterson’s writing draws you in like no other. She masters the art of minute switches in writing style to highlight various scenes and to mellow the reader during down times. Her amazing descriptions always fit the current mood and tone of the story. Through the action and suspense of this novel the reader experiences a love story extraordinaire, complete with out of the ordinary complications and setbacks. There are lots of twists and turns amidst the intensity of the action and reaction of the storyline that keep the readers on their toes.

I love how Paterson goes back and fills in the blacks between Waleron and Delara (and by default, the Talde as a whole) in this novel. You get to know these characters on multiple different levels and at multiple different times throughout. The entire cast of characters becomes more developed throughout this novel as you find out more about their past connections and how they all came together in the present. By this point in the series these very well developed characters, who have come more and more alive with each installment, are like family both to each other and to the reader. It’s amazing to see them together and how they got there. I also appreciate the sheer number of drool worthy Alpha male characters in the novel, and the fact that their significant others are equally strong females. It makes for a brilliant story.

Overall, this was by far my favorite installment in the Senses trilogy. It gave me the book hangover of the century. All I could think about was the need to stay with the characters and read it again. I found myself looking for possible hints to sequels so it didn’t have to end.

Lucky Break by April Angel

Title:  Lucky Break
Author:  April Angel
Series: Sizzling Encounters #3
Published:   August 2013 by Etopia Press
Page Count:  110
Genre:  Erotic Romance
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis:

Will gambling with her heart bring her luck in love?

Lucky is a top event planner with a loving family and the job of her dreams. But she’s not at all lucky in love. Her last relationship ended in a spectacle she’s been trying to forget. Then a chance encounter leads her into the arms of Jared Thomas, one incredibly sexy man who makes more than her heart throb.

Jared loves women—he just doesn’t trust them. He’s lived a hard life, where misplaced trust can mean death. But when he meets the sexy Latina, he wants to get close enough to find out if she’s worthy of more than just play time. And the gloriously hot sex doesn’t disappoint. He wants to make her his, body, mind and soul…if two people with trust issues can stay together long enough…

Excerpt:

Mastering the nearly overpowering urge to grab her by the hand and haul her out of there was not an easy task. He noticed her empty champagne flute and motioned a passing waiter to hand her a full glass. She took a sip of the bubbly. He watched her lick her lips again, lips he kept picturing wrapped around his cock, sucking him into her hot mouth. He leaned forward on the table, closer to her, and inhaled. The sexy, light scent tickling his nostrils made him think of satin sheets and sweaty bodies.

“What did you have in mind?” he asked.

Their gazes met. Arousal flickered to life in the depths of her whiskey-brown eyes. The longer they stared at each other, the brighter it blazed, beckoning him closer. His cock jerked in his dress pants, ready for action. Hell, he sure was glad he was behind the table, because no matter how good his poker face, he wouldn’t be able to hide that bit of evidence from her.

She shrugged. It was a dainty, sexy lift of her shoulders that pushed her breasts farther up her neckline. “You seem to be the expert here.”

He narrowed his eyes. She sounded like she was making fun of him, but she couldn’t possibly know he was anything other than a hired table attendant. “I wouldn’t call myself a professional.” Oh yeah, he was a lying bastard all right. “But I have experience.”

Her gaze latched onto his lips and slowly traveled back up to meet his. He ground his teeth and fought the cock-hardening look she gave him. She licked her lips. “Let’s see if you’re right in your assumption that my luck won’t last.”

“What’s in it for me, gorgeous?”

She leaned closer. Their faces were only a foot apart now.

“What do you want?”

He wanted to close the distance, to taste her plump red lips, and allow her sexy perfume to fill his lungs. “Alone time…” He watched her eyes widen before he finished. “With you.”

The interest in her eyes grew, until her pupils dilated with arousal. She gulped but didn’t respond. He decided to taunt her into agreeing, into giving in to his wishes.

“It’s all right. It’s clear you’re going to lose anyway. I know the game.” He grinned, and because he couldn’t stop himself, he lifted a hand and caressed her cheek. Her skin was baby-soft and smooth.

Her eyes widened and then narrowed. “And if I win?”

Gotcha.

He felt like a lion that had landed on the perfect prey. Now to reel her in. “Whatever you want.”

My Review:

This was a very racy and entertaining novel that keeps you on your toes with the twists in the budding relationship that Angel presents to her readers. Angel sets a fast pace for her storyline yet presents events in a believable manner that pull you towards the relationship between the characters. I also appreciate the fact that the hot and racy scenes between the main characters are used to build the storyline rather than just to get your blood boiling.

I really felt that I needed to know more about Lucky. She’s the main character but isn’t very well developed overall. I found myself asking who she really is, what she’s about. She isn’t very well developed outside of the relationship she finds herself in. To be honest, she’s developed the same way that the supporting cast is. You know what they do but not who they are. Although this novel is primarily erotica, I find that it detracts from the story itself when you know nothing about the characters because you cannot get into the story.

Overall, I found this to be a quite enjoyable read and would definitely venture further into the world created by this author.

Interview with Christine Meunier

Today I'd like to welcome Christine Meunier, author of Horse Country, to Pure Jonel.

Let's find out a bit more about her.

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a country girl at heart, having been born in a country town. I then moved to the city with my parents at a young age. It was when I was 18 that I was able to return to the country to study my passion: horses.

I love learning about horses and teaching others about them. This has led to me undertaking an equine science degree at uni alongside teaching horse studies at a TAFE institute.

Q ~ Are you a carrot or apples kind of gal?

I love them both! I think I’d have to say carrots though.

Q ~ What’s your favourite pass-time?

Reading!

Q ~ What is your favourite aspect of the equine world?

I love the breeding industry and in particular the physiology of getting a mare ready to breed.

Q ~ If you had to pick one event or discipline, what would it be?

Hmm… I love just riding but am not sure trail riding counts as a discipline! Perhaps dressage.

Q ~ What’s one tip that you’d give those who wanted to get into some aspect of the equine industry?

Do it for the love of working with horses and be eager to learn; money can’t be the main incentive.

Q ~ Are there many choices for a job when it comes to working in the horse industry?
Absolutely! I write a blog called Equus – Equine Related Education that explores over 100 different equine related careers. You can read about it at http://equus-blog.com/

Q ~ What inspired you to write Horse Country?

A few things! I would tell my parents about things that were happening at work and amuse them with anecdotes. My mother would comment that I should be writing these down; soon the idea stuck.

Also, my careers teacher in high school indicated that you cannot make a career out of horses and it’s just a phase not worth pursuing. This novel is to show how fun and rewarding it can be to work with horses and generate a career from them.

Q ~ Can you give us a bit of background information on the novel and how you came about it?
The novel is very factually based; woven around the lives of four women who breathe horses and work with them or are studying them to gain a job in the industry. Two teach horse riding in their parents’ riding school; whilst the other two work with breeding thoroughbreds.

The novel is very much based on experiences I’ve had including working on studs and instructing horse riding. The characters you get to meet and work with along the way are so unique, I felt a novel would be a great way to introduce people to them and the idea of working with horses.

Q ~ Do you think how a book cover looks is important?

I do! The graphic designer that did Horse Country created a cover that I’m really happy with; one that I feel helps to show what the novel is about. I think that’s important.

Q ~ What is one piece of advice that you’d give to those who’ve contemplated writing professionally?

Be persistent. Your writing is a product that you’ll need to consistently tell people about to get noticed.

Don't forget to pick up your copy of Horse Country today and find out more about this amazing world!

The Shadow Rises by K.S. Marsden

Title:  The Shadow Rises
Author:  K.S. Marsden
Series:  Witch-Hunter #1
Published:  May 2013 (first published January 1st 2013)
Page Count:  157
Genre:  Paranormal
Shelf: Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Witches are real, and to be blunt, they’re all black-hearted, and evil. These are not wiccans, bored housewives and teens that wore too much black, playing with candles and poems; witches are a different breed that use magic with devastating effect.
Charged with stopping the witches, taking whatever measures necessary, there are witch-hunters, all reporting to the Malleus Maleficarum Council (MMC). For hundreds of years witches have been persecuted and when the powerful Shadow Witch rises again, they have their opportunity for revenge.

The best the MMC has to offer, the talented seventh-generation witch-hunting Hunter Astley has his own part to play. In his own way.

My Review:

Marsden has a very straightforward writing style that keeps the characters and the action in your face throughout this rather intense novella. It is a very well edited and put together novella that takes you on quite a wild ride. Marsden presents her storyline in a manner that is easy to follow. She fills in lots of background information without breaking this flow. She is also very good at marking the passage of time without the reader feeling left behind.

Not only is this one of the few times I can remember seeing witch hunters as the good guys in fictional literature, it is the only time outside of academia that I have ever seen the Malleus Maleficarum used correctly. A huge kudos to the author on that front. Lots of research went behind this lovely novella.

The main characters in this story are quite well developed for a novella. You actually get to know them much better than some characters in full length novels. They are all quite well suited to their role in the story. I also appreciate the supporting cast of characters. they bring a very well rounded feeling to the story.

Overall this is a dense but very enjoyable read. The author leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction at the end, while still wanting more.

Are You Mine? by N.K. Smith ~*~ Review & Guest Post ~*~

Title:  Are You Mine?
Author: N.K. Smith
Published: August 7th 2013
Page Count:  317
Genre:  YA Romance
Shelf: Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis:

Human connection? Who needs it?

Ever since she can remember, wealthy but weary Saige Armstrong has felt different from her peers in Pechimu, New Jersey. With only one good friend to her name, she has navigated the complicated halls of high school and is now faced with the timeless question: Now what?

Fox Harrington, a fun-loving, socially charismatic graffiti artist uses his passions to color his world how he wants it. He knows exactly where his life is headed. That is, until he meets Saige.

A summer project links the two together, making a tentative friendship bloom into romance, but despite their affection for each other, fundamental beliefs and ways of thinking threaten to destroy all they have built.

"These moments in life are the best there are. They’re heavy with emotion, messy with the what-ifs, and frightening with the unknowns."

My Review:

With this novel Smith takes the transition between high school and college/university and presents it in a very
captivating light. She brings forth a myriad of trials and challenges that an individual could face and shows how her characters can come out on top at the end. As a reader you see and (re)live all of the trials and insecurities of a first real relationship, and of two individuals who haven’t had the ideal childhood. Smith very tactfully tackles some really tough and possibly uncomfortable topics while still being upfront and personal about them.

I love Smith’s approach to the characters in this novel. It’s so real and raw that you can’t help but appreciate them as individuals. The author’s writing really gets into the mindset of the main characters. There is a very distinct difference between the two. It also really helps the reader got to know each of them as individuals, and as a couple. There is also a seamless transition between the two viewpoints that doesn’t break or jar the flow of the story, even though they are written in such vastly different manners. She gives her readers a no-holds-barred look at their personalities and innermost secrets. She also shows how the relationship between these two individuals can be simultaneously straightforward and convoluted.

Overall, Smith’s unique presentation of life at the end of high school kept me intrigued throughout. She brought forth a variety of different situations for her characters to navigate and presented them in a realistic yet positive light. It was definitely a read that made me think and feel.

Guest Post from Author N.K. Smith:

I’ve been writing for a long time and publishing for a few years, and I’ve dabbled in a few different genres along the way. With my new book Are You Mine? I chose to go into the New Adult genre feet first. Like with all my novels, it wasn’t exactly a decision so much as the path that led me there.

What I mean is: I’ve never sat in front of a computer screen thinking, I’m going to write a novel in THIS genre. Instead, I write the idea and characters within my head as accurately as I possibly can, and when the dust and sweat settles, I lean back, look at the manuscript and figure out which genre it fits into. New Adult is a genre that is new to the world, even though many people have been writing within that genre for years (it just wasn’t a genre yet). I’ve written several short stories featuring characters new to adulthood, so I think the fact that is a recognizable genre in and of itself is fantastic.

When the dust settled for Are You Mine? it was clearly a NA novel about people facing that age-old question “What now?” Saige and Fox have different outlooks on life, but they’re both at that cliff of young adulthood staring out at the tumultuous sea that separates them and that next stage of life. They both must decide what’s important to them, how they want to proceed in life, and if all the stuff of the past matters when they are about to embark on a new journey of discovery.

Since I didn’t start out with a preconceived notion of which genre the story was going to fit neatly within, I guess I’ll just tell you about the origins of the story. I commute to and from my day job for about forty-five minutes to an hour each way. The road is well-travelled, and it unfortunately it causes some pretty major jams.

I pay attention to quite a lot of stuff, and one thing I like looking at is graffiti. On this particular bridge, there is a set of inchworms, or at least that’s what they look like to me. So I started thinking about the particular artist who sprayed them, and I wondered if he and she knew that those little worms made at least one commuter smile. Then I started imaging the person who could’ve put them there, what kind of person he or she was, what kind of person he or she would fall for, what his or her life’s ambition would be.

And Fox Harrington was born.

Saige, a worn and weary young woman, would be the natural choice for Fox. She represents a challenge to the nearly always happy Fox, so she was created to be the type of person who could truly learn a thing or two from him. The story flowed naturally once she revealed herself to me as a writer. Graphic novels blend both art and words into the perfect fusion of verbal and visual.

Saige and Fox have a piece of my heart, and my hope is that if you give them a chance, they’ll grab a piece of yours as well.

Happy reading!

Fans of the popular YA dystopia series Blemished will not be disappointed by this thrilling conclusion. It will keep you guessing right up to the very last page.

Trust no one.

My Review:

This novel is definitely the most intense of Dalton’s The Blemished series. Intrigue and subterfuge take a stand in a big way amongst the increased action and drama that she brings forth. The real scientific and political possibilities surrounding the concepts behind this novel are just chilling and add to the overall forward motion of the tale. Dalton’s eloquent, well written method of storytelling round this out into a fantastic tale that you won’t want to put down.

The characters that you’ve come to know and love in the first 2 instalments of the series come back with a vengeance in this novel. I appreciate the fact that although each character, regardless of age, race, or ethnicity, has grown throughout the series, no one has miraculously become an entirely new person. You also get to know more about some of the characters’ backgrounds in this tale, making them, and the story as a whole, more rounded and filled out. It’s also very reassuring to see that each character’s speech patterns stay consistent with their native tongue throughout. It adds an extra measure of consistency to this very intriguing tale.

Overall, this was a brilliant conclusion to Dalton’s Blemished Trilogy. She wraps up all events from the past 3 books and gives everyone a sense of conclusion and purpose. That said, she also leaves an opening for more adventures from these characters, so one can only hope.

Finding Pride is book one of the Pride Series Romance Novels, a sexy contemporary romance series by Jill Sanders.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Sanders’ serene descriptions draw you into this quaint little town while keeping with the mellow feel of her writing. Sanders also works some phenomenal illusions into her writing, giving you hints and peaks at things without ever actually mentioning them. I got so wrapped up in the stellar storyline that before I knew it hours had passed and I hadn’t put the novel down. That said, there were definitely some spelling and grammatical issues to contend with, but overall this was quite an amazing novel. I regularly had to go back over sentences to figure out what the author had intended to say, rather than what was published.

I loved the characters that were developed for this novel. They were all such real individuals who had lives and issues of their own. Although each was perfectly suited for their role in the story, none were perfect. It was a great balance.

Overall, this was a 4 star storyline but the severe editing issues knocked it down to a 3 star novel. The story and characters, however, would be worth following through the series as a whole.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Holy S%^(! Could you just imagine? Seriously, could you just imagine being in that position?

Donavan writes with a down to earth writing style rarely seen in romance literature. It lets you focus on the characters and the storyline instead of a multiplicity of flowery words. Donavan still paints a brilliant picture for her audience through her brilliant descriptions and attention to detail. Not only does she build an amazingly vivid world for her characters to live in and her readers to walk through, but Donavan also has a very solid storyline for everything and everyone to revolve around.

I really appreciate the well-developed yet less than perfect characters that Donavan has created for this novel. Each of them are a uniquely crafted person, complete with a history and personality of their own. They also have problems of their own. And the main characters do end up with one heck of a problem to deal with. Even though on the surface this is your typical billionaire and the help type novel, it’s also quite atypical. These intriguing characters make it so.

This novel, however racy, is about stepping outside your perceptions and accepting who you are. Donavan just brings her message around in an extremely exceptional way, one that you won’t be able to put down. My final thoughts? I honestly cannot wait to read more by this brilliant author.

Fish out of Water by Ros Baxter

Title:  Fish out of Water
Author: Ros Baxter
Series:  Aegirian Trilogy #1
Published:  April 1st 2013 by Escape Publishing
Page Count:  169
Genre:  Fantasy Romance
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum meets Splash in a sexy, smart-talking debut about a mermaid in a desert, a city under water, and the secret that no one is supposed to uncover.

Dirtwater's straight-talking Deputy Sheriff Rania Aqualina has a lot on her plate: a nicotine addiction that's a serious liability for a mermaid, a soldier-of-fortune ex who's hooked on her Mum's brownies, a gorgeous, naked stranger in her shower, and a mysterious dead blonde with a fish tattoo on Main Street.

Heading home to Aegira for a family wedding, Rania has a sinking feeling that's got nothing to do with hydroporting seven miles under the sea and everything to do with the crazy situation. Now, if she can just steal a corpse, get a crazy Aegiran priest off her case, work out who the hell's trying to kill her, and stop sleeping with the fishes, she might be able to unravel the mysteries. And maybe even save her own ass while she's at it.

Fish out of Water is Stephanie Plum meets Splash, and the first book in a trilogy about Aegira, an underwater kingdom based on the historical Norse legend of Aegir.

My Review:

Baxter has a down to earth, in your face writing style that really puts you in the psyche of the main character. Her short sentence structure adds to the aura of reality and the hard pressing necessity to move forward with every tick tock of the clock, even if you want to stall and move backwards. I found myself completely immersed in the story and the very unique world that the author has created. I could barely put this book down.

I absolutely love the names that Baxter comes up with for places and things. They’re short, to the point, and memorable. They also make you giggle, drawing you further into the web that she weaves. She also uses similes and metaphors to make her beautiful descriptions more intricate. Baxter’s prologue also does a good job of setting up the mythology for the story as well as giving her readers the necessary background information for events that occur further on in the story.

The characters that Baxter has presented in this novel were amazing. By the end of the novel I was wishing that I had the sequel in my hand. I am so in love with these characters that I didn’t want to let them go, even for a second. You get to know the main characters are real people and you find yourself irrevocably enmeshed in their lives.

With this novel Baxter kept me rooting for the main characters, hoping against hope. Baxter made me hope, she made me dream, made me want to fight for what’s right, and she brought tears to my eyes. And above all, Baxter definitely kept me intrigued, captivated, and guessing throughout this unique tale.

Step by Cindy Paterson

Title: Step
Author:  Cindy Paterson
Series:  The Senses #2
Published:  Smashwords (first published November 4th 2012)
Page Count:  339
Genre:  Paranormal Romantic Suspense
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★ (+ a few for good measure)

Synopsis from Goodreads:

‘Only her love can restore his trust—only with his trust can she win her battle.’

Kilter, an immortal Senses Visionary, excels at being rude and crass with little hope of finding peace after being betrayed and tortured by his brother more than a hundred years ago. Reckless and stubborn he has alienated everyone—just the way he likes it. Until the day he meets Rayne and emotions he buried long ago are reawakened.

Rayne suffers from Anorexia Nervosa. Trapped by debilitating thoughts and a false sense of control, Rayne is slowly dying. Her husband has kept her secluded and alone for years, causing her to withdraw into an emotionless shell. But Rayne’s outward behavior is deceiving for beneath her delicate existence is a woman with strength. The trouble is—can she find that part of herself that has been driven away? Or has her cruel husband broken her fragile existence?

The two tortured souls are brought together only to be torn apart and forced to relive their horrific pasts in order to find salvation. But Rayne’s past has more significance than the Senses realize and their enemies will do anything in order to get her back.

The Senses are in for one hell of a fight as Waleron is forced to make the hardest decision of his life—Damien is tortured beyond his emotional capability by the witch Abigail—and Delara is drawn into a vampire’s arms only to have him use her darkest secret against her.

My Review:

The Senses return with a vengeance with this novel, the 2nd instalment in Paterson’s Senses series. Her fluid writing draws you in right from the get-go and doesn’t loosen its grip until you’ve hit the last page. Paterson writes with such a natural use of the English language and such eloquent descriptions that you feel like you’re watching a movie rather than reading a novel.

I really appreciate how Paterson develops the various supernatural races, species, and being throughout the novel. They are extremely well developed throughout while keeping up with this fast paced novel. I also like how Paterson presents eating disorders within this novel. She tackles a very difficult and troublesome topic with tact and grace. There is a great deal of information on the topic worked into the story and Paterson goes a long way to show how one can approach the subject.

The characters that Paterson has developed for this novel, and for the series as a whole, are phenomenal. Not only is each character individually developed, be they the main character of the novel or simply part of the Talde, but they are also loveable in their own right. Paterson has brought for a very diverse cast that has something for everyone to enjoy. I love the fact that the characters names are short, unique, to the point, and fit each character perfectly.

Overall, this was a phenomenal read that I couldn’t put down, even for a second. It was a phenomenal follow up to Jump, and although this novel could definitely be read as a standalone, I’d suggest reading Jump first as it contains some relevant background information. Also, have a copy of Fall on hand when you finish because you won’t want to let these characters go.

Available:  Swoon Reads
Page Count:  233
Genre:  YA paranormal romance
Shelf:  Swoon Reads copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Swoon Reads:

When worlds collide, myth become reality.

Dragons, vampires and other mythical creatures suddenly find themselves on Earth. Thousands are dead and war looms on the horizon.

For Emma, life is no longer perfect, not with monsters out of legend appearing in the forest behind her house.

When Tyler sets his eyes in her direction, she knows the bloodthirsty creatures (trying to kill her) are the least of her worries, especially when her blood heats to the boiling point every time the gorgeous shape shifter looks her way.

Too late, she realizes having a dragon’s unwavering attention is a dangerous place to be, because there is a fine line between attraction and prey.

Death is no longer in her distant future, it haunts her every move.

My Review:

Cooper’s light hearted and free flowing writing style combine with her at times intense storyline to create a reading experience like no other.

Cooper gives her readers all of the necessary background information as part of the story, keeping her readers captivated throughout. She has such unique concepts that are worked into each and every aspect of this novel. I love how she melds worlds together to create a phenomenally unique whole. Her clear, drool worth descriptions draw you in like the set of a movie.

This novel has such cool characters that you can’t help but fall in love with them. Each is unique in their own right. Not only are they supernaturally gifted, but they’re also completely human in their personalities. It’s the perfect blend of everything to create a cast that you won’t want to let go of.

This was a phenomenal read. I couldn't put it down for a second and definitely cannot wait to read more about this amazingly well developed world. (I also want to move there, but that's a whole other kettle of fish).

Deadly Crush by Ashley Stoyanoff

Title:  Deadly Crush
Author:  Ashley Stoyanoff
Series:  Deadly Trilogy #1
Expected Publication:  Aug 23/13
Genre:  Young Adult Paranormal
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Dog Mountain is just like any other small town — peaceful and uneventful. Well, that is if peaceful means wolves howling all night, and uneventful means it’s overrun by pesky werewolves, then yes, Dog Mountain is just your average small town.

Jade Shaw has spent the last two years avoiding the pack. But when Aidan Collins moves to town, avoiding the dogs doesn’t seem possible. The pack wants him just as much as she does.

Determined to keep him out of the pack’s grasp, Jade does everything she can to gain his attention. Little does she know, Aidan is in deeper with the pack than she could have imagined, and competing for his attention is a deadly game, one she may not want to win.

My Review:

“Holy sugar sticks” what a novel! It was absolutely awesomesauce.

Stoyanoff’s writing style draws you in to her well developed world and gives you a place to call your own while you escape your reality through her work. She writes the way that people really think, feel, and talk. This adds a layer of realism to her supernatural world. This novel also packs an emotional punch. Not only do you have a supernatural story that keeps you guessing and reeling, but this smoothly written novel makes you feel with and for the characters.

Stoyanoff uses the technique of flipping perspectives to great success. She keeps everything straight between the characters while giving us insight into multiple points of view. As a reader, it gives you a much deeper understanding of the story, the town, and the characters. You become more and more attached to the main characters the more you understand them. This builds with the well developed and very captivating characters that Stoyanoff brings forth in this unique story to create a cast of characters that you’ll never forget.

Stoyanoff has also created a very solid pack law for her town. She takes elements of were-culture and melds it with some very unique wolf traits to create a world all of her own. It is very captivating and extremely entertaining. The uniqueness of this story combined with Stoyanoff’s open and enthralling writing style will keep you captivated. You won’t be able to put this one down.

My biggest issue with this novel is that it ended. Don’t get me wrong. There was a definite ending to the novel. Everything is wrapped up nicely while presenting a brilliant segue into the sequel. But it ended. I didn’t want to let these characters go. And I can’t wait to re-join them in the sequel.

Lottie Barrett Lives (Again) by Hugh Centreville

Title:  Lottie Barrett Lives (Again)
Author:  Hugh Centerville
Published:  June 27/13
Page Count:  374
Genre:  Children's Paranormal
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

It’s Halloween night, 1966. 13 year old Lottie has been dead a 100 years and the kids go up to the graveyard with the book of spells Charlene Pendergrass swiped from Miss Robespierre. The kids are going to have some fun scaring themselves, bringing Lottie back, but it turns out Miss Robespierre isn’t the faker everyone says she is and there’s nothing fake about her book either and now there’s a ghost-girl walking the streets of Hope Mountain and what to do with her?

Maybe nothing.

Lottie’s no zombie ax-murderer. She’s just a peculiar kid who wants to be a teenager, something she missed the first time. What else she wants is Bobby Clyde, cutest boy in the freshman class and how can Bobby resist? Lottie is cute and sweet and funny, or are those things illusory, a witch’s spell on Bobby? And what’s Bobby going to do when it’s time for Lottie to go back up onto the hill? Bobby is determined to go with her. Lottie doesn’t think he should go but she doesn’t think she could live (or die,) without him. Only Bobby’s mom and big sister can save him and before they can save him, they have to convince themselves it really is true, and there isn’t much time.

Lottie Barrett Lives (Again) is speculative fiction, a not-so lighthearted zombie romp.

My Review:

Centreville brings forth a very intriguing premise to create a perfect read for those who are superstitious or who want some quiet spookiness for a while. This novel is well and calmly written. Centreville’s understated descriptions work their way into the story to bring lots of details to his readers without stating them outright. I also applaud the fact that zombies, witches, and ghosts make their way into the story without a barrage of death and dismemberment. Centreville also uses the supernatural to bring forward a large amount of the trials and challenges faced by young teens, in a very atypical manner.

Centreville has created some very interesting characters to take us through this novel. Some of the cast was very well developed, and you got to know them as a whole. Other characters aren’t quite so well developed, leaving a bit of a hole in the story. My biggest issue with the characters was the fact that their speech became forced at times. In general it flowed quite well, but it wasn’t the way a real 13 year old would converse.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read for parents and children alike.

The Starfall Knight by Ken Lim

Title:  The Starfall Knight
Author: Ken Lim
Published:  June 13/13
Page Count:  291
Genre:  Fantasy
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Surrounded by cut-throats and slavers, Alessa knows there is more to existence than mere survival on the aerocks – landmasses that traverse the sky, powered by a volatile mineral. When the opportunity for a new life presents itself, there is nothing that will stop Alessa from having her way.

Devan seeks the respect of his peers, rangers who protect their homeland Centara – an aerock so large that it can haul along smaller lands.

When Alessa’s aerock makes landfall, they bring more than commodities and supplies for trade. They bring memories of past mistakes.

They bring war.

My Review:

It took me a bit to get into the story. I felt like I was missing something, even though Lim spends a lot of time explaining everything. The very unique and intriguing concept of the story did eventually draw me in and once I was there I was hooked. It is definitely a concept that I’ve never encountered before. Lim uses direct language and very strong descriptions to create a very solid world for his characters to thrive in. Lim also works lots of intrigue and subterfuge into this story to keep his audience guessing. The pace also really picks up at the end, becoming quite exciting.

The characters in this novel were quite interesting with unique and memorable and pronounceable names that you are drawn to. You know what everyone does and where they came from, but who they are and what they look like remains a bit of a mystery for many of the characters. The cast of prominent characters is so large that it is difficult to develop everyone sufficiently. I feel that I barely got to know a handful of them. The author also jumps back and forth between the various characters, and it becomes a little hard to keep straight at times.

Overall this was an ‘out of this world’ fantasy (excuse the pun) that would be enjoyed by those who enjoy outer space and fantasies. It is a story of good conquering evil with a twist, a kick, and a few spins.

Excerpt:

I folded my napkin and looked first at my father, then my mother. "Mum? Dad? I have a question."

They both stopped in the middle of their pudding and looked at me with expectant smiles.

"Do you know who lives in the woods in that cabin behind the Ambuscade? He's an old hermit, lives by himself, I think."

My father took a zealous interest in his pudding.

My mother went white. She collected herself, exchanged a worried glance with my father, and lied to me for the first time in my life. "No, darling. We don't know who lives there. But that's private property. You shouldn't trespass in those woods."

My Review:

Lazar has a very flowing and approachable writing style. He pulls the reader right in without them ever noticing. His well-developed and laid out storyline take you on a delightful journey along. There is also lots of action in this story that keeps you moving forward, but it is all done so naturally that nothing seems amiss. Lazar also works some very detailed descriptions right into the action of the story to draw you further and further into this brilliant world.

The author has this novel well placed within its time period. People, places, things, and events are all built around some truth. This author, however, really knows how to take the history of a place or situation and give it a twist to make it his own without losing the essential parts of said history. Reality and fiction combine seamlessly in this amazing tale.

The characters that Lazar brings forth for this story are not only intriguing, but uniquely suited to the story in which they find themselves. You get to know the main characters quite well, like they you’re your school mates. These characters become part of you and they take you on a wild ride right along with them.

This is definitely a fun for all ages story that keeps you guessing, keeps you captivated, and above all, makes you think. I definitely wouldn`t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

The Tycoon by Anna Jeffrey

Title:  The Tycoon
Author: Anna Jeffrey
Series:   Sons of Texas #1
Published: February 16th 2013 by Createspace
(first published December 19th 2012)
Page Count:  394
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

When Drake Lockhart, wealthy ranching scion and Texas tycoon, meets a stunning redhead at a fancy ball, the last thing he expects is a tryst he can’t forget, followed by her disappearing in the middle of the night. Every minute spent with the vulnerable beauty has left him hungering for more.

Shannon Piper was out of place at the charity ball. And an intimate encounter with a man so far removed from her social hemisphere wasn’t on her agenda. He has a reputation for ruthlessness and is one of Texas Monthly’s most eligible bachelors, known for his history with women. Is a relationship based on just sex the way to protect her heart? Or is it the beginning of the most enduring love a girl with a sketchy past could ever know?

My Review:

This novel starts out at a bit of a slow pace but then picks up quite nicely. By the end you’re quite wrapped up in the relationship between the two main characters. She employs a very intricate, descriptive writing style that allows you to visualise everything that is going on and everywhere that you travel with the characters. Jeffrey also makes sure to fill in any background information without breaking the smooth, mellow flow of the story. I also appreciate the fact that Jeffrey writes about cutting like someone who rides a cutter regularly and knows the scene. She also portrays ranching in a realistic manner rarely seen in fiction. Overall, this is a very down to earth type story, which I quite enjoyed.

The two main characters in this novel are quite well developed. You get to know them as individuals and as a struggling couple. Some of the supporting cast is also quite well developed. They play key roles in the story (and I’m assuming in the sequel) and it shows in the way that they are portrayed. Others are less developed, but still fill their role in the story very well. As a whole, I quite enjoyed the cast that was brought forth in this novel.

As a rule, I hate cliff-hangers. A lack of ending in a novel is a pet peeve of mine. That said, Jeffrey walks a fine line between a cliff-hanger and leaving an opening for a sequel in a series. The main affairs of this novel are wrapped up within the novel itself, but there is definitely a lot left undone and waiting for the reader to explore more. It’s the perfect middle ground. I know I, for one, am dying for the sequel.
