My Review:

This is an amazingly well written story. Throughout, the author covers a large span of time with this novel, but nothing ever seems rushed or missing. This is a very detailed story that the reader floats through without confusion and with a sense of time flying, as it does when your only child grows up. It comes to a bittersweet conclusion that simultaneously makes you smile and brings you to tears.

Rummler draws you right in with the characters that she creates for this work. I appreciate that each character says true to their speech patterns throughout the novel. I enjoy that each character stays true to the regional dialect from their home town, thus giving each character a unique way of speaking. Also, through the solid belief systems of these wonderful characters the story becomes very religiously based. You get so involved in their lives that you can’t help but feel for these phenomenal characters.

Overall, this was a quick but enjoyable read. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this author and her characters.

My Teachers are Zombies by Tom Shin

Title:  My Teachers are Zombies
Author: Tom Shin
Published:   April 28th 2013 by Tom Shin
Page Count:  79
Genre:  Children's Short Story
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

My Teachers are Zombies is the story of three fourth-grade friends who discover a terrible secret about how their teacher is a zombie. Their teacher assigns extra and unnecessary homework to make the students' brains bigger in order to eat those brains later on.

Taking a student's brain doesn't hurt the student, it just leaves them as a mindless person, to continue being 'taught' for no reason or purpose.

Together, the three friends must find a way to stop their teacher before she eats all of the brains in the class.

Written at a fourth-grade reading level, this story is appropriate for all ages.

My Review:

This short story had me laughing so hard that I was in tears. It was very original and well written. I couldn’t help but be sucked in to the story. Shin writes in a very upbeat manner that draws readers of all ages in. Although the subject manner may seem fluffy on the surface, there’s much more to this novel than meets the eye. You will find yourself wondering ‘what if’ while enjoying this brief escape from reality.

The overall character development was minimal, but it didn’t detract too much from the overall story. The author provides all necessary information without wasting valuable time and space on irrelevant details. The focus is on the details of the story itself.

This novel was a very interesting look at the lives of 3 very different grade 4 students. It was a very captivating and extremely funny story.

Guest Post with Wendy Unsworth ~*~ Giveaway ~*~

Today I'm pleased to welcome Wendy Unsworth to Pure Jonel.
Let's see what she has to say about epublications.

This may sound like a little bit of a suck-up but ...

Since the advent of ebooks many authors, like myself, have finally done it; we have self-published. For those who have chosen to take this route, regardless of sales success, I would like to bet that a very large proportion, just like me, have no regrets in taking this decision.

There is no doubt that it is a huge task to complete a full length novel. The fact that the author can be sure, at the end of the endeavor, it will be published, makes a huge difference to the whole experience. Rather than months or years of submissions to agents/publishers with no guarantee of the full work ever even being read at all, much less evaluated, there is now the knowledge that publication can happen.

Of course going it alone puts the onus for every aspect of the book squarely on the shoulders of the author. Not only must they ensure the manuscript is as good as it can be (whether editors and other professionals are employed or not) but there is also the cover, front and end matter and the dreaded formatting to tackle. For me, every step required research and advice. It's a mountain to climb but thousands of determined authors are proving it can be done.

So... Stage one complete. But how many first time authors realize, when they finally finish the herculean task of bringing a book to publication that this is actually just Stage one? I'll bet again, and this time I would say - not too many!

Speaking for myself, my end goal as an aspiring first time author was to publish. I really did not think much about what would happen beyond that point.

Fortunately, though, the writing/reading eworld reaches out, it's arms open wide. There is help at hand. Writer's sites and forums offer good advice: Create a website, a Facebook page, a Twitter presence. Join popular book sites; comment, engage, be part of the community. It all takes work and precious time but, if managed wisely and kept within bounds is well worth the effort. And an added bonus; somewhere in this flurry of activity the uninitiated cannot fail to stumble into the realm of the Book Blogger.

I would like to champion (and I may be accused of that 'creeping' I alluded to in my intro!) the work of book bloggers. Since publishing my first novel 'The Palaver Tree' I have come across so many of them that are willing to be helpful to new authors and 'give them a try.' If they accept a book for review, of course, there is no guarantee that they will give a shiny, five star endorsement but these people read a lot of books, so when they do praise your work it feels very, very good indeed!

Book bloggers, I am sure, come in all sorts of shapes and sizes but one thing they have in common is their incredible energy. They read and review books at an astonishing rate, arrange giveaways, special features and interviews - and all this around their presumably busy and full, offline lives. And apart from opportunities for self - promotion, book blogs are great places to hang around, find out what others are reading, check out their opinions and add one or two titles to the old, 'To Be Read' list.

So, at the risk of preaching to the converted, (after all, you are reading this on a Book Blog!) I would like to say... Thanks to everyone, including authors who help promote self published books. And thank you book bloggers everywhere, great job, keep up the good work. Where would we authors be without you?

Lightpoints by Peter Kassan

Title: Lightpoints
Author:  Peter Kassan
Published:  March 25th 2013 by Melange Books
(first published March 24th 2013)
Page Count:  218
Genre:  Paranormal Suspense
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

What if you suddenly discovered you had a sense—and powers—that almost no one else in the world did?

When Amanda Lindner Nichols, a 24-year-old graphic artist living with her husband in Queens, New York, is revived from a near-death experience, she discovers she perceives everyone around her as points of light—but not with her eyes. She soon learns she can not only perceive the life energy of others, but she can give and take it. With the help of others like her, she brings her husband Chris to the brink of death and back to bestow on him the same remarkable faculty, and they’re the happiest they’ve been.

But not for long. All over the world, people who’ve been revived from their own near-death experience at just the right moment discover themselves with these same unusual powers. They find ways to use them—some for good and some for evil. When Amanda and Chris encounter a ruthless group of gangsters with the same faculty, tragedy follows—and Amanda faces the greatest challenge of her life.

My Review:

Kassan has an intricate yet clearly laid out writing style. There is a sense of urgency to the story, like everything should come to a head. From the very beginning I found myself wanting to figure out what would happen next and how everything connected. The author flips between the stories of many different characters with similar stories, and keeps the who’s who clear all the while. Unfortunately the different storylines don’t really intertwine. Even at the end when some of the stories begin to intertwine, the bulk of them remain completely separate.

The author has created a large cast of characters, each at varying points in their development. Very few of the characters have a solid background, but many are well developed in the present day. You get to know them on a certain level. There are many areas where the author begins to develop a notion regarding a certain character or couple, but doesn’t bring it to completion. Unfortunately the author spends time developing some characters that have very little to do with the main storyline. This time might have been better spent on further development of the main characters in the novel.

Overall, I really wanted to like this story. The concept was really trippy and the characters were memorable but there were just too many unrelated storylines that didn’t fully incorporate with the whole.

The First Pillar by Roy Huff

Title:  The First Pillar
Author:  Roy Huff
Series:  Everville #1
Published:  April 1st 2013 by Roy Huff
Page Count:  230
Genre:  Young Adult Fantasy
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Owen Sage is the emblematic college freshman at Easton Falls University. With all the worries about his first year in college, he was not prepared for what would happen next. His way of life was flipped upside down when he mysteriously crossed into another dimension, into the beautiful land of Everville. His excitement was abruptly halted when he discovered that there was a darkness forged against both the natural world, which he knew well, and the new land which he discovered, Everville. He must devise a plan to save both worlds while joining forces with the race of Fron and The Keepers, whom both harbor hidden secrets he must learn in order to gain power over the evil that dwells in The Other In Between. With a race against time to save both worlds, his short time at Easton Falls did not quite prepare him for the evil, dark forces he must fight in order to conquer The Other In Between.

My Review:

Huff uses an upbeat and captivating writing style throughout this novel and combines it with a story that you can really get into. He creates a phenomenal world that he shows you rather than telling you about it. Through it Huff takes the fantasy genre and runs in circles with it. You become drawn into this world, just like the characters are. You’re also kept guessing, just like them. This technique really draws you in and keeps you going.

Above all, Huff’s storyline is as structurally and fundamentally sound as his writing. He has a forward progression to the story, each event leading up to the next. He also illustrates the interconnectedness between the events and characters, however separate they may seem at the time. By flipping between characters and places Huff is able to show many perspectives, including the ability for good and evil to switch sides and the lines in between the two to blur. He does, however, keep everything quite clear through minute changes in writing style and tone. Combine all of this with the author’s descriptions, which are complete and awe inspiring yet worked right into the body of the story without interrupting the flow, and you have a captivating whole.

If Huff’s very approachable writing style draws you into the novel, his characters keep you there. A variety of characters and their personal stories intertwine and combine to create a unique and intricate whole. Each is uniquely developed to suit its purpose in the story, while becoming a well-developed and realistic individual.

With this story Huff incorporates all the elements of a typical fantasy tale – mythical creatures, magical realms, war of good vs evil, etc. – into a story that can’t be compared to anything I’ve ever read before. It was a fun and quick read that was a phenomenal escape from reality and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Lost in the Seven Worlds by Petronela Ungureanu

Title:  Lost in the Seven Worlds

Published:  March 13th 2013 by Crushing Hearts
and Black Butterfly Publishing
Page Count:  26
Genre:  Paranormal Romance
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Lost in the Seven Worlds is the debut work of Petronela Ungureanu, an avante-garde Romanian writer.

When a young woman finds herself captive in another world, she makes the mistake of falling for one of the disgraced beings. In the name of love, she is confronted with a most disturbing demand and faces a crucial decision. Will she remain lost in the Seven Worlds, or will she accept the challenge of a love beyond mortality?

My Review:

This was a very well written and intriguing short story. The approachable yet slightly formal 1st person narrative of the story draws you in and gives the reader perspective into the main character’s plight. Ungureanu works some amazing descriptions into this story that allow you to picture this world. She also doesn’t let her descriptions overpower the storyline that she’s developed. Ungureanu also kept her character development to a minimum. She put just enough description in to allow the reader to imagine the characters. It fit perfectly with this short story.

Overall, this was a quick and yummy story of forbidden love with more twists than I’d have ever expected. It was quite enjoyable.

My Review:

This was a phenomenally thrilling story. You got the rush of a whirlwind romance combined with a healthy dose of reality that draw you in and keep you guessing and hoping right to the very end. You won’t be able to put this one down.

Boyd has the ability to trigger emotions in her readers. This novel made me feel an entire spectrum of emotions. I went through the same whirlwind that the characters did. It was a novelty. The author didn’t simply tell me or show me what was going on, she pulled me in and allowed me to participate, to live vicariously through her characters and their stories.

Not only does Boyd evoke some very intense emotions in her readers, but she also illustrates all of the scenery and action perfectly. Everything is presented in such vivid clarity that Boyd leaves very little to the imagination with this novel. That said, the intensity and realism that she provides is part of what makes this story so intensely enjoyable.

The characters that Boyd creates for this novel are so real that they set the bar for romance characters. I love how real they are. This comes right down to their relationship with one another. Although one is famous and one is a small town girl their interactions don’t change who they are. I also absolutely love how the main character compares her love life to the romance novels that she reads. It’s something that most of us can relate to. The supporting cast is also quite well developed, although it is done in such a manner that they don’t overpower the main characters.

This was a phenomenal escape from reality with the main character living the life that we all dream of when reading a romance. I definitely can’t wait to read the sequel to this. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. How will it all end?

About the Author:

Natasha Boyd is a writer with a background in marketing and public relations. She lives in the coastal Carolina Lowcountry, complete with Spanish moss, alligators and mosquitoes the size of tiny birds. She has a husband, two sons and a cat named Tuna. Eversea is her first full length novel

Guest Post: J.S. Council

Today I'd like to welcome J.S. Council to Pure Jonel.
Let's see what she has to say.

Guest Post: Book Reviewing and Writing by J. S. Council

I’d like to say that I was born a critic. It is said that, when I was a baby, I cried when my mother dressed me in pink, I refused to eat food that I thought tasted bad, and once, I even told a man in the checkout line that he smelled. Yeah, I think it’s safe to say that I had no problem speaking my mind. I may have a bit more of a filter nowadays, but the honesty hasn’t diminished. When I started writing book reviews in my free time, the most important advice I was given was, “Just be honest.” I could do that.

I have been excited about writing for as long as I can remember. So excited that I graduated college with a BFA in Creative Writing – Fiction. Reviewing the works of my classmates was an important part of the writing curriculum. The teacher would spend an entire class lesson teaching us the correct way to write a critique. Then they would have us write reviews of each other’s work for our home assignments. As a first year student, I wondered, what the heck does knowing how to write a good review have to do with writing a good story? I have been a Book Reviewer for Read 2 Review for about a year and a half now and I just finished the first round of editing for the second novel in my series, Airion. I can say now with a degree of confidence that the two walk hand in hand quite often.

Admittedly, I was quite a bad editor of my own work when I first began writing. Not only did my eyes gracefully glance over the spelling errors and grammar mistakes, I didn’t know what to look for in terms of overall improvement. Embarrassingly, the plot, settings, and character developments were barely touched during my editing processes. The review for my first novel was pretty brutal, not in terms of the story or the lack of imagination that kept the reader interested, but the version of the novel that the reviewer received, was not the final edit. Nevertheless, it was close enough to the final edit that it should have been much cleaner than it was. I got the message. No one cares for a good story if the writing isn’t clean. It was a lesson well learned.

It wasn’t until six months after I started writing for Read 2 Review that I realized that my own writing started to change. When I got ready to edit a completed piece of my own, I stopped thinking like the author of the piece and started thinking like a book reviewer. I followed the advice of Stephen King in his book, On writing. After finishing a piece, I let it ‘rest’ for no less than a month before I allowed myself to look at it again. King suggests even two or three months, but sometimes I get impatient. The time of rest allows you to come back to the piece and look at it with an objective eye. For me, after not looking at a piece for an extended amount of time, I find it much easier to edit my piece as if I were reviewing it, looking at, not just the technical errors, but the over all flow. Using my experience as a Book Reviewer, I’ve learned the importance of editing my work as if it wasn’t me who wrote it.

About the Author:

“Although I didn’t fully commit to making writing my life’s work until my sophomore year of college, I have always been a writer at heart. I was the only student in class to get excited about school papers, even asking to write a few for extra credit on occasion. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a degree in Creative Writing – Fiction. After graduating, I moved to Japan where I wrote most of my debut novel, Airion: Return to Zire and all of my second novel Airion: Light and Dawn – the first two of a four book series. Japan was a peaceful place to just sit and write, but life in Japan was also filled with adventure. However much I loved it there, I had to return home to do what I love most. Write.”

Once Upon a Tag by Anna Adams

Title:  Once Upon a Tag
Author:  Anna Adams
Published:  April 23rd 2013
Page Count:  25
Genre:  Contemporary short story
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

When David, a young French painter, unexpectedly meets Rita, an infamous Parisian street artist, his convictions are shaken to the core during a night he is unlikely to ever forget.

My Review:

What a cute short story! It draws you in and keeps you there. It makes you think and it makes you feel. I can’t believe how much the author covered in such a short amount of time without rushing or leaving anything out.

This short story is remarkably well written. It tackles a topic that is prevalent throughout most of the Western world but rarely talked about. Adams does so with flare and tact. By using well known locales as the backdrop for this story she gives herself more time to develop the storyline itself while still allowing the reader to picture everything that is going on and where the characters find themselves.

The characters in this short story are minimally developed but it works perfectly. We know as much about the characters as they do about each other. The mystery behind each of them is part of the brilliance of the story. I mean, really, how well do you get to know someone that you’ve only known for a few hours?

Interview with Janeal Falor ~ Giveaway ~

Today I'd like to welcome Janeal Falor to Pure Jonel.
Let's find out some more about her!

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm really shy. Doing all this book stuff has really pushed me out of that comfort zone, lol. But once you get to know me I talk. A lot. I also like to cook, eat, and be outside. I especially like when I get to do these things with my family.

Q ~ Sleep in or get up early?
What is the 'early' you speak of?

Q ~ What is your biggest pet peve?
When people chew with their mouth open. *shudders*

Q ~ If you could have coffee (or tea) with any author who would it be and what would you ask them?
I'd have hot chocolate with Rae Carson. I love her Girl of Fire and Series, and I'm so excited for the last one to come out. I'd ask all about her books and characters. They are incredible and the world she has created has an amazing amount of depth. Seriously, if you haven't read them yet, you should.

Q ~ What is your favourite genre to read?
Young Adult, anything speculative. Whether it's a touch of magic realism or full on fantasy, I like being transported to a world with things can't happen in real life. And it always have to have romance. Love me a good love story!

Q ~ Ebooks, paperbacks, or hardcovers?
All are both great in their own ways. I love being able to take a tons of books with me easily. But I also find it easier to navigate print copies. Also, the whole 'there's just something about a print book' thing really applies, though I'm still trying to figure out why exactly...

Q ~ How did you begin writing? Was there a single catalyst or a series of events?
I've been writing since I was a kid. The first time I got serious about it was after I had an amazing dream. There were elves and pirates and magic and so much awesomeness. I knew I wanted to share it with others. That was the beginning of a long, hard journey that lead me here.

Q ~ Who are your biggest supporters?
#1 – My husband. He is fantastic.
My sister, Karen C. Eddington, is great at supporting and encouraging me. Loralie Hall and RaeChell Garret are also incredible. So much so that you should go follow these two ladies on twitter right now. Their names and books are going to be big some day.

Q ~ When you write, do you lay out a solid outline before beginning, or start writing and iron out the kinks later?
Both. I'm weird. I write beginning to end, but in such a way that it's more like a massive 30k word outline. Except it reads more like a short story than an outline and it's easier to work out the kinks than writing the full thing.

Q ~ What inspired you to write ‘You are Mine?’
I had been reading a lot of marriage of convenience/marrying for money type of books. And then I thought: What if girls weren't married off for money, but for something they had? Something they couldn't control. Something of great value. Like...Magic!   ~  And thus, You Are Mine was hatched.

Q ~ Do you have a favourite character in the novel? Is this person based on someone, or multiple someones, in your life?
It's so hard to pick a favorite character. I start thinking I know who and then I think, but what about this one? If I had to pick I'd probably say Katherine. I really like how she handles life after everything she's been through. She's not based off of anyone, though I do know a lot of great, strong people who have probably influenced my development of her in general.

An extra tidbit for you about Katherine: Her name was Charlotte up until I was almost ready to publish. I still see the name Katherine and go 'Who the heck is that and what is she doing in my book?' Followed by, 'Oh, Charlotte. Derp.'

Q ~ What’s up next for you? Can you tell us a bit about the sequel?
Along with the Mine series I'm also working on a stand alone YA Fantasy, Ever Darkening. The idea of it scares the pants of me to pull off, but it is one of my all time favorites. Crossing my fingers (and toes and arms and legs) that I can pull it off.

I'm trying to get it and Mine #2, Mine to Spell, out as quickly as I can. Mine to Spell is from Cynthia's perspective, a sister to Serena, the main character in You Are Mine. Her voice as been loud and insistent ever since I finished Serena's book, so I'm very happy to finally be working on it.

Q ~ What’s one piece of advice you would like to give those who’d like to start writing professionally?
Write a ton, read a ton, and learn to use criticism to make your books better.

And now, enter to win an ecopy of You Are Mine by Janeal Falor.
Entries close at 11:59pm on June 26th.
The winner will be notified on June 27th.
Good Luck to all!

Is he really who he appears to be or is he something more sinister? Can he save the world? Do we even want him to? Is this who mankind should rely on for help or will this be the worst mistake that mankind has ever made?

My Review:

This novel is absolutely scary in its possibilities yet also enlightening in the same manner. Funke has taken the battle of good vs evil, of God vs Satan and put in in a modern day perspective with such realism that you can’t help but shudder at the consequences.

I noticed a marked change in the author’s writing style, as compared to the first novel in the series. Funke has a very clear and straightforward writing style that lays out everything for the audience’s perusal. This flows very well with the subject matter and storyline of the novel. The news articles that Funke works into the novel make everything seem all the more real. They also add a layer of clarity with respect to the things that occur both in the main storyline and behind the scenes. I also enjoy that the intertwining storylines are coming closer and closer together with this instalment. Although you could see the connections in the first novel of the series, with this one you can feel them.

Funke has created some extremely well developed characters. Those that were present in the first novel in the series become even further developed here and the new ones take on a life of their own, working their way into your heart and soul. As a reader you get to know the characters so well that you develop a real love/hate relationship with some of them. Through these remarkable characters Funke makes the weird and offbeat seem real and possible. It’s a thrilling ride.

Overall this is a very hard hitting story. It builds on the events of the first novel in the series and becomes even more superimposed on reality as we know it, so much so that even those without strong religious beliefs will enjoy this novel, and the series as a whole.

No matter how hard she tries to cover up the marks her monsters have left behind, they never truly go away, and Myles’ monsters are no different.

Once again, Sophie’s caught between life and death, but this time, only she can save herself.

My Review:

This novel pulls you in right from the get-go. It’s one of those novels that anyone, teen and up, will love. In it, Rae walks that fine line where truth meets fiction and she does so with such flare that you can`t put the novel down, even for a second. I would, however, suggest reading the first novel before picking this one up, or you might be a little lost, but you’ll still be drawn right into the action.

The clips of songs at the beginning of each chapter set the tone for the chapter. They pull you towards a feeling that permeates throughout the section. Rae`s phenomenally tuned in descriptions propel her readers into an entirely different realm where they live right along with the characters. She works comedic moments in with moments that make you think. She also incorporates some real tear jerker moments into this phenomenal work. It`s like real life on paper, with a rather supernatural twist.

I absolutely love the characters that Rae has developed for this novel. They are phenomenally approachable and real, yet out of this world in their development. Rae picks up the characters from Sunshine and continues to develop them without drastically changing them in any way. Their dialogue is also very natural, flowing the way that people really speak. These characters are all so lively and lifelike that you can’t help but love them. You feel for them like they are your friends from high school.

Above all I must commend Rae for her subject matter. She tackles some very difficult and taboo subjects with tact and flare. Rae brings them up as topics for conversation and as things to thing about with this phenomenal novel. Not only does she do that but she also does so with compassion and a mannerism that allows her readers to realise that these things are not abnormal phenomena, but rather the norm for part of society.

Overall, this was a fan-frickin-tastic novel. Rae writes of drama naturally, and of the type of drama that happens in real life. This may be a story with a supernatural twist, but the realism that Rae captures so eloquently is absolutely divine.

My last words???? Holy Cliff-hanger Batman!!!! Give me the sequel now! Really. NOW!!!! I need more of these fantabulous characters!

Watch for this amazing novel's release on June 28th!!!!

My Review:

In the omnibus for this amazing series Kinrade sets forward some discussion questions that really make you think. They also allow you to relate the novels to the real world, and see the real possibilities behind the premise for these novels. I appreciate the fact that Kinrade stepped it up a notch and didn’t just ask standard discussion questions, but rather included interesting points.

Kinrade goes above and beyond the discussion questions with the rest of the additions to the omnibus. I absolutely love the character bios that Kinrade presents. They really let you get to know the little bits that you may have missed in the story. I also like that the characters give quick write-ups about themselves or participate in interviews. It`s really a neat way to get to know everyone better.

I also love the behind the scenes info that we get through the Q&A with the author. It is so rarely that we get to see what goes on throughout an author`s writing process. I really enjoyed the who, what, where, why, when and how behind this series that I`ve so come to love.

Overall, this omnibus was definitely an awesome way to wrap up your time with the three phenomenal books in this series.

All I Desire by Andrea Goodson

Title:  All I Desire
Author:  Andrea Goodson
Published:  May 31/13
Page Count:  4209 words
Genre:  Historical Romance
Shelf:  Books I Bought
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis:

Adam Parsons thinks he knows exactly what he wants out of life. Working as a farrier in 18th century England does little to satisfy him. A dark ship comes into port and a sudden opportunity arises to change life for himself and his love, Selena. Will Adam find what he truly desires or will he lose all that he already has?

What will it take for Adam to find all that he desires?

My Review:

Goodson definitely doesn`t disappoint with this short story. She definitely keeps her writing at the top with the very well written short story.

I absolutely love Goodson`s descriptions and the flow of her writing. Everything is so well written and pieced together in such a natural way that you can`t help but immerse yourself in the world that she creates. This short story also has such real possibilities in events that have occurred in human history that the realism is unmistakable.

The characters in this novel are such real entities that you can`t help but love (or hate) them. Although character development in short stories is, by definition, minimal, Goodson presents everyone in such a manner that you can see where they are coming from and what sparks their actions. She also presents them in such a light that your imagination easily fills in any blanks that may be left.
As a whole, this is definitely one of the best short singles that I`ve read in a very long while. With it, Goodson remains at the top of my favourite authors pile, outshining many mass produced authors on today`s market.

The group is determined to stop Lisandra, not only to save the lives of strangers, but to help get Mark's brother, Tanner, out of her clutches. But can Mark and Sasha ever forgive Tanner for what he's done to them?

My Review:

This novella picks up right where the first in the series left off. Not only that, but it smoothly transitions into a completely new story. In this story Mona combines the world at its best with the world at its worst to create a captivating novella.

Mona is a very descriptive writer who has mastered the art of subtlety, working her descriptions right into the storyline itself. She does this in a very well written story that captures both your heart and your imagination.

The author has a well-developed cast of characters that she works with to enmesh us in this interesting world. These characters could hold their own in any fantasy story. You really feel for them – both the good and the bad.

As a whole this story was simultaneously comedic and frightening. It was an interesting way to spend an afternoon.

The Sparrow by Kristy McCaffrey

Title:  The Sparrow
Author:  Kristy McCaffrey
Series:  Wings of the West #3
Published:  Dec. 1/11
Page Count:   304
Genre: Historical Romance

Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis:

In 1877 Emma Hart comes to Grand Canyon, a wild, rugged, and until recently undiscovered area. Plagued by visions and gifted with a second sight, she searches for answers—about the tragedy of her past, the betrayal of her present, and an elusive future that echoes through her very soul. Joined by her power animal Sparrow, she ventures into the depths of Hopi folklore, forced to confront an evil that has lived through the ages.

Texas Ranger Nathan Blackmore tracks Emma Hart to the Colorado River, stunned by her determination to ride a wooden dory along its course. But in a place where the ripples of time run deep, he’ll be faced with a choice. He must accept the unseen realm, the world beside this world, that he’d turned away from years ago or risk losing the woman he has come to love more than life itself.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

I absolutely love McCaffrey`s writing. She melds realities with possibilities to create a love story that (literally) transcends time. It is a phenomenal journey on multiple plains of existence that is still hinged in reality, in real historical events and places.

This novel is extremely well written. McCaffrey is a phenomenal storyteller who is not afraid to think outside the box. Everything is presented in complete clarity with a flow that keeps you immersed in the storyline. I absolutely love and commend McCaffrey for the historical accuracy of her stories. They add an extra element of reality and enjoyability to her work.

This novel has an underlying current of accepting yourself and your gifts, whatever they may be. She brings some Native American tribes and their vast beliefs to the forefront of this story while melding it with Christianity to create a cohesive whole as the interesting backdrop for this phenomenal love story. The characters in this novel need to look outside themselves to find who they really are inside. That said, even without these undercurrents, this is just a plan awesome story.

McCaffrey`s true to life characters follow real belief systems. You can`t help but fall in love with the characters. You hope that they will succeed and reach their end goal, while wanting to help them with the many realistic trials that they face throughout the novel.

This is one of those novels that brought tears to my eyes at times and joy to my heart at others. It was a phenomenal read that I`d recommend to anyone who enjoys historical romance, with a hint of the other.

This is the sequel to The Wren, which was The Romance Studio's CAPA Winner 2003.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Well, the book is over and I feel like I just walked into (and unfortunately, I’m now back out of) the Old West. McCaffrey’s brilliant storytelling makes everything so lifelike that she literally drops you right into an amazingly vivid life straight out of the history books, but with a lot more flourish. She takes real places and real events to set the backdrop for this phenomenal love story.

McCaffrey’s writing has a natural flow that is easy to lose yourself in. As a reader, you are immediately pulled into the world that she creates. The author is a phenomenal storyteller who has the ability to mesh description with narrative with action. Each and every sentence progresses in an amazing way towards a thrilling conclusion. They symbolism in this novel is also phenomenal. It is subtle yet multi-faceted, adding an extra element of depth to the novel. McCaffrey can capture you in a love story that keeps you completely captivated without relying on explicit scenes. This story definitely holds its own without it. Now, don’t get me wrong, she can also write one hell of a sex scene that has you on the edge of your seat. They definitely add to the aura of the story, but are supplemental to the already solid and enthralling storyline.

I absolutely love the characters that McCaffrey creates for this story. Each and every one is uniquely developed to suit their purpose in the story. They are also developed in a manner that suits their time period. Although they may be slightly left of centre in some of their thoughts, overall they are not out of place for the society and culture in which they live. The family and work ethic that the characters in this story embody is also heart-warming and refreshing.

Overall this was a brilliant novel that I couldn’t put down. McCaffrey is quite quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.

Peaches and the Gambler by A.T. Hicks

Title:  Peachs and the Gambler
Author:  A.T. Hicks
Series:  A Peaches Donnelly Mystery #1
Published:  October 31st 2012 by Salty Gurl Books
Page Count:  279
Genre:  Suspense
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

What Does a Strip Club, a Dead Man and a Dove Ice Cream Bar All Have in Common?

Peaches Donnelly

Peaches has a major problem: she's just been fired.

Unaccustomed to filling her days with nothingness, she embroils herself toute suite in the recent murder of a childhood friend.

However, standing between her and the solving of this heinous crime are two pesky daughters, a selfish opera singer sister, the diet from hell and two sexy men she can't resist.

Add to this bubbling pot a hasty decision to go undercover as a stripper and you have a story rife with drama, laughs and a little dash of danger.

Follow Peaches and the always funny cast of characters in this first installment of a rollicking series of cozy mysteries.

My Review:

The author’s writing has a good flow. Unfortunately, at one point I was starting to wonder if the story was going anywhere. The intro got quite long winded. Also, the author tends to meander away from the main storyline quite often. There are just too many sub-stories going on for the page count, so the main storyline gets lost in it all. However, overall the story still maintains a natural flow, even if it resembles more of a meandering brook. Hicks’ descriptions are also very illustrative and well put together. She lays out the world behind her story very well.

The main character in this novel is quite well developed. You get to know a whole lot about her. The supporting characters do, however, remain somewhat superficial. Luckily it doesn’t detract much from the story itself. I also must commend the author on the fact that the dialogue stays true to the dialect that the author has chosen, and is written the way that people talk. It makes for a very unique read.

As a whole this novel was well written, even if the storyline was a little muddy. Overall it was an enjoyable read.

Pie, An Old Brown Horse by Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo

Title:  Pie, An Old Brown Horse
Author:  Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo
Published:  November 8th 2012 by http://www.kandykayscaramuzzo.com
Page Count:   158
Genre:  Reality, from a horse's point of view
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

This is the story of a twenty five year old ranch horse that was injured and pretty much left to die. He was brought to a stable and sold, even though no one really expected him to survive. He was reborn into a merchant of hope. His amazing spirit and calmness have helped many people over the next 13 years as he became the most amazing mentor and therapy horse. This is Pie's story as he tells it about the most amazing second chance at life and his travels through it. You will meet his person, a shy young girl who he helps grow into adulthood. He will introduce you to the other horses and people that helped shape his journey. His influence has known no bounds throughout this last 13 years and he continues to shine his light even at the ripe old age of 38. This is a feel good story about life, love, second chances and giving back.

My Review:

With this novel Scaramuzzo takes a very unique (yet realistic) outlook on the horse-rider dynamic. She also illustrates the diversity and discrepancy in the equine industry. Above all, I commend Scaramuzzo on always using the correct equine and equestrian terminology throughout the novel. It really adds to the mystique of the story.

This is an extremely well written novel. It has a brilliant flow that you find yourself falling into. Everything is presented in light of the fact that she is helping Pie tell his story. Therefore, the story is written in a straightforward and matter of fact fashion that keeps you completely captivated.

The characters in this novel are all phenomenally well developed and easy to relate to. I can so picture my big brown, but not so old yet, ranch bred horse saying these things. The outlook that Pie presents on life is so realistic that you find yourself completely wrapped up in the story. The different equine reactions to things are spot on, and everyone who knows horses can relate. They characters are also quite well developed. You get to know everyone very well. You know where they came from and why they react how they do.

As a whole, this was a phenomenal read. This novel made me laugh so hard that I fell off my chair. Everything is so realistic yet off the wall that you can’t help but laugh at some of the situations that Scaramuzzo presents in this story. It also brought tears to my eyes at times, and made me full out laugh at others.

7 Days With Adam by Jay Speights

Title:  7 Days With Adam
Author:  Jay Speights
Published:  March 21st 2013 by Rosemary Isle
Page Count:  176
Genre:  Christian Fiction
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

7 Days With Adam is a brilliantly crafted work about Adam, the first man, who visits the author and shatters many of his core beliefs about God, creation, the basic nature of humans and this world. He has astonishing revelations about his and Eve's real legacy. After the 7 day visit, he leaves the author enlightened with actual exercises, prayers and meditative techniques that we can all use to access our Divine Inner Power and achieve mastery in our lives. This book is a testament to the value of storytelling in spirituality, and to disciplined spiritual practice and being attuned to the Higher Self and Divine Inner Light that is in all of us.

My Review:

This novella is quite well written and insightful. It really makes you think about spirituality and about the world around you. Speights puts spirituality in a modern day context. The story does get a bit preachy at times, but hey, that`s what the story is about, right?

Speights keeps his writing to the 1st person. This makes the story extra enjoyable and much more personal. It`s written the way that people really think – it`s a bit scatterbrained but with a definite forward flow.

The main characters in this novella remain quite superficial. You don`t get to know them at all outside of their conversation in the story. This made it quite difficult to relate to the story as a whole as I had no connection what so ever to the characters.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It made me think and left me with a sense of self.

My Rating:  ★★★

My Review:

The premise behind this novel is hilarious. I can just picture it. To better illustrate the effects of this pact Taylor switches perspectives between the characters but keeps each one clear. It makes the story even more entertaining because you know what everyone is thinking and how everything comes about.

There is a definite forward flow to the writing in this short novel. Some of the dialogue does become a bit forced and doesn’t flow like the spoken word. Overall, the story needs a little bit more editing to help with the overall flow, thus allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves in this otherwise entertaining story.

The characters in this novel were quite well developed. You really got to know the main characters, and the supporting characters were given enough development to hold their own in the story without overshadowing anyone else.

As a whole this is a very cute story. Taylor takes a topic that is very real to many women and gives it a very comical spin.
