Synopsis from Goodreads:

Getting pregnant as a teenager and being coerced into giving her baby up for adoption left a festering scar on Jaymee Ballard’s life. Trapped by poverty and without many allies, Jaymee nearly gives up hope of getting her daughter back after her best friend is murdered. Now, four years later, a wealthy woman with legal connections hires her as a housekeeper, and Jaymee gathers the courage to seek her help. But Jaymee’s last chance ends up in a puddle of blood in one of the historic antebellum mansions in Roselea, Mississippi.

I just murdered your wife...again.

An unsigned letter consisting of six horrifying words turns Nick Samuels stagnant life upside down. Stuck in emotional purgatory since his wife’s unsolved murder four years ago, Nick is about to self-destruct. The arrival of the letter claiming credit for his wife’s murder and boasting of a new kill sends Nick to Roselea, where he and Jaymee’s worlds collide.

Jaymee and Nick realize exposing the truth about her daughter’s adoption is the only way to solve the murders. Up against years of deception, they rush to identify the killer before the evidence–and Jaymee’s daughter–are lost.

But the truth doesn’t always set the guilt-ridden free. Sometimes, it destroys them.

My Review:

This novel draws you all the way in right from the get-go. I couldn’t put it down, even for a second.

Green is a master storyteller. She balances just the right mix of mystery, suspense, love, and reality in her stories to make it entertaining for everyone. She also develops a very solid storyline that leaves you reeling and wanting more at every twist and turn. Although you can’t always guess where she’s going with the story, once you get there the journey makes perfect sense. Not only that, but Green’s vivid descriptions and masterful manipulation of scenarios makes for a very fulfilling read.

I love the characters in this novel. They’re so real. They are extremely complex characters and you feel for them on multiple levels. Green develops all of her characters very subtly in order to create extremely realistic characters. You find out things about them that you would about real people that you know and meet every day. You don’t know their entire life history and psych profile, but rather the things that come up in real life.

Oh, and as for the ending… HOLY F&$@ING S#%T. I did not see that coming.

Page Count:  201
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Shelf:  Giveaways
Rating: ★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Even though the emergency room is the place people end up on one of the worst days of their lives., it certainly can be one of the most interesting places. Dr. Mina Caselli has been the chief of emergency medicine at City Hospital for 15 years. She thought she had seen and heard just about everything, until she meets up with an attractive young medical student, who hauntingly reminds her of someone in her past who she is trying to forget. In the sequel to The Choice and Clinical Distance, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? picks up fifteen years into Mina Caselli and Rosemary Rosetti's relationship. Their busy careers as an ER physician and police detective make their lives exciting, but the stress and long hours of their jobs have taken a big toll on their love life. The fact that Rosetti has entered early menopause kicking and screaming isn't helping matters, either. Can their relationship survive? Will Mina and Rosetti succumb to the temptations and pressures of their demanding careers or will love keep them together?

My Review:

This is a very informative novel. It goes from fast paced to slow and steady, but it’s never dull. It’s much like real life. It is also very well written. The author put a great deal of time and effort into the storyline and editing of the novel. The story itself is very solid and intriguing story. She goes into great detail with her descriptions, ensuring that her readers can picture everything and everyone that she puts to paper.

The characters in this novel were very well developed. You get to know them intimately and superficially. I like that the main characters in this novel are a middle aged couple. They are normal, everyday individuals. However, a couple of the characters in this novel really grated on my nerves. I found the novel hard to get deep into since I developed such a strong dislike for one of the main characters.

Life is in the details, and that’s one thing that this book has in abundance, details. The author laid everything out clearly so that as a reader, you were never guessing.

The Perfect Crime by Peter Hindley and Susan Goodsell ~ Release Day Blast ~

Title:  The Perfect Crime
A Story of Truth or Fantasy
Author:  Peter Hindley & Susan Goodsell
Published:  May 30, 2013 by 5 Prince Books
Genre:   Non-Fiction, True Crime, Political

Book Blurb:

Events have accurately been recorded since the time of Alan’s death; they combine to reveal an intriguing story. Did he die naturally or was he helped in some way? Has a crime or two taken place? Some may think so. Maybe there is a conspiracy; if so how far it may extend is unclear. Nothing is quite as it should be.

This unique book evolves from a simple account to a vast scandalous exposé, a true and topical account showing a fascinating view of human nature, society, and the establishment in the United Kingdom. Many questions are posed for the reader and evidence is laid bare as you take a journey of discovery.

The story and writing style changes drastically as the twists and turns in the narrative expose themselves; ultimately it reaches a logical end, but that is not the end of the story. A sequel is already underway.

Excerpt:

We have accurately recorded the events near the time of Alan Hindley’s death, who was a brother to Peter and father of Susan, the two authors of this account, and what followed; they combine to reveal an intriguing story. Did he die naturally or was he helped in some way? Has a crime or two taken place? Some may think so. Maybe there is a conspiracy; my lawyer certainly thought so; how far that conspiracy extends is unclear. We are certain that nothing is quite as it should be. Nevertheless this account shows a fascinating view of human nature, English society and the workings of the establishment in the United Kingdom. The story is so bizarre that it could well be fiction, and that is why I have added "A story of truth or fantasy" to the title. What is frightening is that it is all absolutely true.

The normal formalities that follow a death were not adhered to after Alan’s demise: Why the mandatory procedures were bypassed may not be evident, but during the course of our nine year account they certainly do become evident.

Why did his wife act as she did and who aided her? These and so many other questions will become apparent.

In this case what is certain now is that the will and wishes of the deceased, Alan Edward Hindley of Paignton, Devon, has not been adhered to and the UK law and establishment did nothing to aid its rectification: The laws relating to Wills are fatally flawed and the government is fully aware of that. As named executors we have been denied the right to execute his wishes. You may think this is not possible, but it is, and it has proved to be absolutely legal.

His wife, Wendy, acted as sole executor of her husband’s Last Will and Testament without the other two named executors and we reveal how simple it is to do just that. Why she felt this was necessary will ultimately be disclosed. You will learn how the solemn duty of executing a will can be mal administered in a totally legal way and without fear of retribution.

We have experienced many twists and turns along our path of discovery and these have been reflected in both the different styles and structure of the book. Our journey has taken us to numerous office doors and has led us into the heart of the halls of government, where events have made it very apparent that what we were witnessing was true injustice and unchecked corruption within the United Kingdom. It is for this reason that we felt it necessary to pen our story, to be able to share our account with you and all our other readers, who have been reading an abridged account on the Internet since May 2008; it is very much in the public’s interest to be aware of what can go wrong and does go very wrong daily.

We have been told that Alan died in his home during the evening of 14th March 2002 in more than one place, and all on the same night, the last time anything vaguely like this happened was two thousand years ago (please forgive the last statement, it is not meant to offend); but first a little background information about the family.

Forbidden Fire by Kimberly Kinrade

Title:  Forbidden Fire
Author:  Kimberly Kinrade
Series:  The Forbidden Trilogy #2
Published:  March 27th 2012 by Evolved Publishing
Page Count:  270
Genre:  Young Adult Supernatural
Shelf: Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Book Blurb:

"She escaped, but she'll never be free."

"Time held no meaning as my mind darted in and out of memories. Past and present collided to create a full-sensory collage out of my life: playing hide-n-seek with my best friends Luke--who always cheated by walking through walls when he was about to be caught--and Lucy; Mr. Caldrin critiquing my sketches and offering ideas to make them more realistic; targets changing faces, blending into the same person, their thoughts rippling through my mind like waves. Through it all, a demon stalked me from the shadows of my memories, never quite showing its face, but crouching, waiting.

And then I dreamed...."

Sam and Drake may have escaped, but they aren't free—not with a powerful Seeker after them. As Sam struggles with the ethics of her new powers and embraces a blossoming physical relationship with Drake, Lucy and Luke face challenges of their own.

With forces coalescing inside and outside the Rent-A-Kid dorms, it's only a matter of time before the fire they started forces each of them to make choices they can't undo. But will it be enough to save them?

My Review:

This novel was an emotional roller-coaster that keeps you on edge the entire time. Once Kinrade begins her story she doesn’t let you go until it is over.

At the beginning of this novel Kinrade gives just enough background info to jog your memory as to what happened in the first novel in the series, without boring you with long recaps. She picks up the story right from the get-go and keeps you captivated. If her solid storyline doesn’t draw you in, Kinrade’s inviting yet exciting writing style is sure to do it.

I love the world and the characters that Kinrade creates. It is seamlessly and flawlessly put together. Kinrade leaves nothing to chance in her novels. Each and every aspect is plotted to create a unified whole, leading the readers to the ending, or in this case, the ending of one crisis that leads us towards the next.

Not only does Kinrade continue to develop the main characters from the first novel, making them more and more lifelike but she also has some of the supporting characters step up and take a bigger role in the story. We also get to know some entirely new characters in this novel who, although possibly misunderstood, are following what they believe to be right.

Kinrade also continues to switch perspectives from character to character. It really helps to draw you into the novel. It also helps you understand the characters and their actions. She does it so flawlessly that it really adds to the story rather than causing confusion or detracting from it. I love how Sam is written in the 1st person and Drake in the 3rd; it fits their characters’ personalities perfectly.

As a whole, this was a brilliant novel that picks you up and whips you around. Kinrade fills in many holes left from the first novel while leading you into the 3rd.

He won't stop until he claims her. Torch struggles with his primal need to possess her and his hatred of everything she represents.

Infinity is determined to protect her heart while dealing with the pressure of pulling off another successful tour without spiraling into another mental meltdown.

My Review:

At the beginning of the book, the author’s writing seemed all over the place. I kind of felt like a piece of the puzzle was missing. It was like I knew what was going on but had no idea why it was happening. Within the first couple of chapters, I realised that I was in the same boat as the main character. The same secrets that were being kept from her were being kept from me. It was an awesomely unique reading experience and I loved every moment of it.

Venez’s writing fits her style of storytelling perfectly. This was a fast paced, suspense filled novel that kept you on edge while drawing you completely into the action. Venez paints the scene in such a vividly realistic manner that the supernatural elements become natural. Nothing seems off the wall nor over the top, but yet you know that you aren’t in Kansas anymore. Her vividly written background sets the scene for her well-developed story to take you on a wild ride.

The characters that the author creates are so intricate that you can’t help but admire (or hate) them. The cast is also extremely varied. Not only is there a wide range of supernaturals, but also a very wide range of personality types. Not two characters are the same, or even similar for that matter, but each and every one is fully and uniquely developed to fulfil their role in the novel.

Overall, it did take me a couple of chapters to warm up to the story but after that I couldn’t put it down for a second. And I’ll be damned if I don’t want, no need, to know what happens next in this realistically surreal world.

My Review:

Holy Hannah! What a ride!

Each of the authors writes naturally. Every story has an easy to follow flow. They are also quite well written. They mix the supernatural with the natural to create unique bites that carry you away. There are some extremely unique ideas in many of the stories in this anthology. They made you think, made you feel, made you want, hell, some even make you laugh. You get drawn into each and every mini world. You may not get to know the characters well, and you may not spend days on end immersed in their worlds. Those factors are not relevant to this work. Each author takes you on a quickie that you lose yourself in for the time it takes to read them. Every story is brought to completion in its own way, bringing you there right along with it.

The different stories in the anthology mesh perfectly together, creating an awesome way to spend a couple of hours with a glass of wine. I’ll definitely have to file this one away for a re-read at Halloween!

Or will Tomasz come between them both?

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

If I could tell you just one thing about this story it would be: “Welcome to a world you’ll never forget.” This is a book that will take many out of their comfort zone, but it is so tactfully done that you find yourself immersed in an entirely new world. Nostromo takes a topic that remains taboo in some circles and brings it to the forefront in a mainstream and very accepting manner with this thrillingly erotic tale.

Nostromo employs phenomenally intricate descriptions that paint a picture for the audience. He also relies on these intricate descriptions to set the atmosphere for the story perfectly. Rather than describing in length what someone is feeling or how they are reacting, Nostromo paints a 3D picture using sight, touch, and smell to create an entire atmosphere that the audience feels they are a part of. Overall, you cannot help but immerse yourself in this world. The author pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.

I love the character development in this novel. You get to know the characters, yet you never know everything about any of them. They all remain slightly mysterious to the reader, as they do to each other. Everyone has hidden secrets, including these characters. I also appreciate that the author only develops the main characters, as the supporting cast are all just background players. Nostromo tells us what we need to know to delve into this world with his characters, but doesn’t burry us in irrelevant details. I found myself really coming to like the main characters. I wanted to help them. More than once I found myself cross with these characters for all of the secrecy. Had they only been honest with each other they would have realised that they were all wanting the same thing. That said, it also made them much more real and approachable. They were real people with real life issues.

Overall this was a very unique, very intriguing story. Nostromo develops it in such a way that you can’t help but relate to the characters and want to get to know them better.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Become involved with a sexy younger man. Why would amnesia strike when her whole life has had such a major upgrade?

Carter is living the life he's always dreamed of, a life with Justine, and he refuses to let a bump on the head derail his perfectly laid plans for a Happily Ever After. He'll do whatever it takes to remind her that they are the perfect couple, but how do you make the woman you love remember that she loves you?

Luckily for the both of them, her recollections are tied up with her hormones, and they have all the ingredients they need for a happy life.

No recipe required: Just Add Heat

Baby, It's Cold Outside--Carter's life is chugging right along. Career? Check. Living with the love of his life? Check. Future on track? Not so fast. Suddenly, his perfect life is thrown upside down when Justine's accident wipes her memories. He's got to make sure she remembers their past so that they can have a happily-ever-after in their future.

Do you ever want to know what the hero of a romance novel is thinking? Where Just Add Heat tells Justine's story, Baby It's Cold Outside gives you Carter's version of the same events. It's true what they say; men and women don't think in the same way. The difference is all in the perspective!

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Fire and Ice combined 2 awesome novels into a phenomenal read. I really like that rather than writing 1 long story and flipping back and for the between the characters, creating a long and potentially confusing story, Jourdin writes two separate stories, one from each POV. Not only are the stories themselves able to stand alone, but they also complement each other to create sheer awesomeness when put together.

Jourdin stays consistent with characters, dialogue, and writing style between the two novels. She also makes certain that there isn’t a lot of redundancy between the two. It was a great deal of fun to read through these two novels. It was also great to see the amount of uniqueness that can be found within Jourdin’s work.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

What a hell of a weekend for this poor guy. I couldn’t picture it. Wondering if you’d lost everything on what should have been one of the best, most exciting days of your life. And the author lays it out so realistically that you can’t help but feel for the characters.

This story being a romance from the male POV is just phenomenal. It’s an awesomely heart wrenching love story, but with a bit more kick. None of the frilly, girlie stuff here. The story draws you in without asking and doesn’t let you go. Although Jourdin’s writing style remains consistent from the first novel in the series, but yet changes to accommodate Carter as the POV character. It’s quite unique.

Character development in this novel is minimal, however, the characters are so well laid out in the first novel in the series that it would be redundant here and would actually break the smooth flow of the story. We do, however, find out more about Carter and his view on the other characters in the novel.

All I have to say right now is that I F-IN LOVE this story. It was the embodiment of awesomeness. Taking this unique storyline, that was already atypical for the genre, and telling it from the male POV just pushed it over the top.

Just Add Heat by Genvieve Jourdin

Title:  Just Add Heat

Published:  November 26th 2012 by Pin-up Press
(first published 2011)

Genre:  Romance

Rating:  ★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Take one part slightly insecure chef and add one part confidently sexy man. Mix well. Pour out the memories of the past two years and what do you have? A recipe for disaster.

Justine is a boyfriend-less chef; at least, that's the last thing she remembers. After a fall wiped the memories of the last two years of her life, she is struggling to absorb her new circumstances. Apparently, she's the racy star of her own web-based cooking show and has become involved with a sexy younger man. Why would amnesia strike when her whole life has had such a major upgrade?

Carter is living the life he's always dreamed of, a life with Justine, and he refuses to let a bump on the head derail his plans for a Happily Ever After. He'll do whatever it takes to remind her that they are the perfect couple, but how do you make the woman you love remember that she loves you?

Luckily for the both of them, her recollections are tied up with her hormones, and they have all the ingredients they need for a happy life.

No recipe required: Just Add Heat

Book 1 of the Fire & Ice Series, the story from a female point of view.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

OMG. I seriously couldn’t picture living through this. It’s completely plausible, and extremely well laid out by the author, but as an individual, OMG. Just OMG. Horrific. But the author has this tragic event laid on top of an awesomely intriguing storyline that takes you on a wild ride, all the way to a happy ending.

Jourdin’s writing meshes perfectly with her well-developed storyline. She writes very smoothly but yet with grace and style. Through her word choice and sentence configuration she adds tension where appropriate. She also becomes more light-hearted when the scene calls for it. Her descriptions also bring everything into a vivid reality.

I also really love the character development in this story. They become more than simply names on a page, but rather your best friends. I came to love the characters themselves. They’re simultaneously very real and very unique. The author uses some of the most ridiculous (yet standard) terms for things, especially lady parts. You can’t help but laugh at some of the things that the main character comes up with. It makes her seem extremely real. She says what she thinks, and talks like a real person. You cannot help but love her for it. She draws you further and further into the story.

This was a very intriguing story that drew me in from the get go. It was simultaneously your typical romance, yet very atypical for the genre. It was a unique break from the norm while giving you exactly what you want.

Interview with Bernadette Marie and Lost & Found Blast

Today I'd like to welcome Bernadette Marie to Pure Jonel.
Lets see what she has to tell us.

Q~What’s something fans would find fascinating about you?
As of October 2012 I will be a 2nd degree black belt momma! I have 5 sons (2 of them are 2nd degree black belts, 2 are conditional black belts and one is a high red.) We kick butt in this house!

Q~What other careers have you had?
I never give up a good career. SO I’m still doing data entry, I still run a salon—only now it is in my basement. I teach anyone anything they want to know from writing to karate.

Q~What genre(s) do you write?
I love to write Contemporary Romance. However, I do have some paranormal in my future.

Q~What genres and authors would we find you?
You’ll find me in contemporary romance and I’ve been blessed to ride the charts with such great authors as Nora Roberts and Bella Andre.

Q~How would you describe yourself if you were “speed dating” your readers?
I promise a happy ending. You won’t walk away from my books with a heavy heart.

Q~Has your life changed significantly since becoming a published writer?
I’ve certainly had to learn to take personal compliments! As a writer you can change people’s lives with your words. It’s powerful. Other than that I’m still doing what I love and in the middle of that I’m driving my kids around, trying to clean the house, and kicking butt in karate. That’s the best part about being an author. The book is out there now doing the work.

Q~What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Not falling asleep at the keyboard. I’m blessed with constant flow in my mind…but my eyes won’t always stay open for me.

Q~Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Total pantser! Nothing is planned when I sit down.

Q~Do you work on one project at a time? Or do you multi-task?
Multi-task to a fault!

Q~What else would you like readers to know about you or your work?
That I put my heart into every story I write. Sure I have been accused of being predictable, but with happily ever after that part is predictable…but the journey is the fun part.

A bit more about the author:

Bernadette Marie has been an avid writer since the early age of 13, when she’d fill notebook after notebook with stories that she’d share with her friends. Her journey into novel writing started the summer before eighth grade when her father gave her an old typewriter. At all times of the day and night you would find her on the back porch penning her first work, which she would continue to write for the next 22 years.

In 2007 – after marriage, filling her chronic entrepreneurial needs, and having five children – Bernadette began to write seriously with the goal of being published. That year she wrote 12 books. In 2009 she was contracted for her first trilogy and the published author was born. In 2011 she (being the entrepreneur that she is) opened her own publishing house, 5 Prince Publishing, and has released contemporary titles and began the process of taking on other authors in other genres.

In 2012 Bernadette Marie found herself on the bestsellers lists of iTunes and Amazon to name a few. Her office wall is lined with colorful PostIt notes with the titles of books she will be releasing in the very near future, with hope that they too will grace the bestsellers lists.

Bernadette spends most of her free time driving her kids to their many events. She is also an accomplished martial artist who will earn her conditional second degree black belt in Tang Soo Do in October 2012. An avid reader, she enjoys most, the works of Nora Roberts, Karen White, Megan Hart, to name a few. She loves to meet readers who enjoy reading contemporary romances and she always promises Happily Ever After.

And now, a bit more about her latest novel:

Title:  Lost & Found
Author:  Bernadette Marie
Series:  The Keller Family Series #5
Published:   May 9/13 by 5 Prince Books

Genre:   Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Darcy McCary came to Nashville with some big expectations--to find her birth parents. She had no plans of making a life in Tennessee. But when her sources lead her to Eduardo Keller, her heart took over, and plans changed.

Eduardo Keller is a man who goes after what he wants and he doesn't have time for playing games. Darcy is exactly the woman he's been looking for to assist him in business and be his partner in life.

Because he loves Darcy, Ed promises to help her find the answers she seeks. What he doesn't know is that if Darcy finds the secret to her past it might mend her curiosity; however, it might also tear apart a branch of the Keller family.

Excerpt:

Ed Keller leaned back in his chair and kicked his feet up on his desk. The view from his office would never cease to amaze him. The view from his uncle’s office was much more spectacular, but he had no reason to complain.

Who would have thought, nearly twenty years ago when he’d asked for an after-school job to afford a limo ride to take a girl to prom, that he’d end up with the title Vice President on his business cards.

He laughed. He couldn’t even think of the girl’s name that had squeezed at his heart. She’d been older. That he remembered. But he’d never done well with older women.

Now he sat atop an empire that his uncle’s grandfather had started and his uncle’s father had carried on. But it was Zach Benson who made it what it was today.

Benson, Benson, and Hart built big—built on time—and built under budget. Nothing had changed.

Ed didn’t have a foreman like Zach had. His other uncle, John Forrester, had been the best foreman any company could have asked for. A loyal employee until Ed’s Aunt Arianna made him retire only two years earlier. But another would come along. Right now he had to focus on a new assistant.
Interviewing people for a position shouldn’t be an issue. He’d been doing it for years. But a personal assistant had to be in your business, and he didn’t like that.

He’d fought it for years. Temps were good. They came, did the work, and left. He figured it was kind of like dating the wrong girl. There weren’t any he wanted to spend his life with.

Perhaps his expectations were too high. After all, his Aunt Regan had been Zach’s assistant. They’d been married nearly twenty-five years, and she still took care of him. It wouldn’t be long before Tyler and Spencer, their sons, would be sitting in Ed’s seat.

Ed dropped his feet to the floor and pushed up from his chair. When the time was right, he’d find the assistant of his dreams. He’d given up on the woman of his dreams, so an assistant would have to do.

He walked to the elevator and pressed the button to go down to the lobby. There was a Starbucks there now, and he’d grown very fond of caramel lattes, thanks to his Aunt Arianna, though he didn’t go for the skinny version. His Uncle John would say it was a bit too frilly a drink for a man in the construction business. His Uncle Zach, on the other hand, would argue that it was a good stress reliever.

Ed laughed at himself. What an eclectic bunch of people he had in his family. And even without them there with him, he still enjoyed them.

The gathering of the masses in the Starbucks also entertained him, almost as much as the thoughts of his family and their differences.

Ed ordered his drink and stood at the counter waiting for it to be handed to him.

As he looked around the store, he mentally spotted and named each kind of person. There was the tourist, the executive, and the assistant. There was a couple, obviously just downtown for the day and…hmmm, one that stumped him.

She was professional, probably interviewing by the way she was dressed, but she wasn’t comfortable with the big building and the mass of people. She was using Starbucks as a common ground, something familiar, to ease her nerves.

He listened as she ordered her drink—decaf and nonfat. What fun was in that, he wondered.

She tucked her change back into her purse, walked to the end of the counter, and stood behind to Ed to wait for her drink.

Flowery perfume filled his nose. She had a sweet side.

The lady behind the counter handed Ed his iced caramel latte. He turned to leave and, he’d say so himself, that was when things got interesting.

The woman who had been standing behind him, searching in her bag for something, looked up just as Ed turned around. She shifted to move out of his way, but instead she moved right into him.

Ed’s hands slipped from the condensation on the cup, and the entire, cold drink poured down the front of the woman.
She let out a stifled scream, and her hands went into the air. “Oh-my-God!”

“I’m very sorry.”
Ed turned toward the counter and grabbed a handful of napkins. He would have helped to mop up her clothes, but he noticed that the white, silk shirt clung to her and decided it just wasn’t a good idea to try.

“Look what you did!” She ripped the napkins from his hand and began to blot away the coffee, which had already stained the shirt.

“Sorry, but I think you ran into me.”

She snapped her head up again. “Oh, men. You’re not always right, you know. Sometimes you do make mistakes.”

Not only was she not as sweet as her flowery perfume, she was jaded. Bad news.

“Again, I’m very sorry. How can I help you?” He turned and reached for more napkins, but when she pulled them from his hand, he noticed she was crying.

“I think you’ve done enough.”

“I still think I can help in some way.”

“Listen. My suit is ruined. This is the only one I have. I was searching for a job, and I can’t do that now. I can’t hand out resumes looking like this.”

Ed watched as the woman continued to wipe off her blouse, but to no avail. It was ruined, but he still wasn’t going to take the blame.

“Are you looking for a job in this building?”

She let out a grunt. “Why else would I be here?”

“I was just asking. I know most of the businesses in the building. Perhaps I can help you out.”

The woman pursed her lips. “I don’t need your charity.”

“It’s not charity. You seem to be in need of a job, and I’m sure I can help you find one.”

“What, do you own this place?” She waved her arms in the air.

“Let me see your resume.”

The woman stared at him as if he’d lost his mind. That wasn’t new. You didn’t run a multi-million dollar company in your mid-thirties without people giving you a shifty eye.

Her coffee was set on the counter. He moved in to grab it, but she moved quicker. “I’ll get this. I can’t afford to waste a sip of this. It’s my breakfast and lunch.”

She picked up the coffee and moved to a table where she set down the cup and pulled a resume from her bag.

She handed it to Ed. “Here it is. I hate to say it, but I’m desperate. If I don’t find a job in three days, I have to go home.”

“Why? Does that suit turn back into a pumpkin and your glass slipper breaks?”

“Have you ever been desperate for anything in your life?”

With both Vie and Carter working to find out what is going on in their respective worlds and defeat Lucian, will they ever be able to find their way back to each other.

My Review:

What an awesome sequel to Descended. Miller picks up this story right where the prequel left off and really filled in some of the holes left from the original while spinning an awesome tale for us to read.

I love how the author works Native American rituals and customs right into the story. It may not be super detailed, but the details present are accurate. It adds a brilliant undercurrent to the main story. Miller also seamlessly ties two belief systems together to create a cohesive whole. It’s very interesting to see the similarities when brought together in this manner.

Miller’s smooth, flowing writing style allows her readers to immerse themselves in the storyline. Her writing style also changes minutely to match the tone of the story, evoking emotions and reactions in the reader. It combines to create a very unique ride for a varied audience.

The characters in this novel are an interesting mix of divine and human. No one is infallible, even if their biggest fault is not accepting anything less than perfect in those around them. The main characters are also quite well developed as individuals. Miller took the characters from the first novel and continued to make them even more well-rounded. You cannot help but love them. They are also such diverse individuals that everyone can relate to at least some of them.

This fast paced and entertaining novel kept me guessing and wondering throughout. I was impressed throughout and can’t wait to catch up with these characters again.

Stranded by J.C. Valentine

Title:  Stranded
Author:  J.C. Valentine
Series:  Night Call #1
Published:  November 2nd 2012
Page Count:  100
Genre:  Romance/Erotica
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Burned, Felix Sinclair has all but vowed never to get seriously involved with another woman as long as he lives. After a long day’s work, Felix is looking forward to getting back to his luxury apartment in the city. When he detours onto a road less traveled in order to shave off some travel time, the last thing he expects is to wind up stranded in a roadside ditch in the middle of a downpour–or to fall into the arms of a beautiful woman.
Recently divorced, jobless, friendless and utterly alone, Poppy Montgomery is struggling to convince herself that single life is what she wants–needs. Then a handsome stranger staggers into her life and sparks fly. Riding out the storm together, their instant connection seems like the perfect opportunity to explore a night of passion, but will one night be enough to satisfy their craving for one another?

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Stranded is the first in an interconnected series of erotic romance. Each book can be read as a stand alone, but you will find that each new character has been previously introduced in some way. As an introduction to the series, Stranded is a novella, but rest assured each new addition will be a full length novel worth sinking your teeth into.

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Valentine presents her story in a manner that you can relate to. This is a situation that you could plausibly find yourself in. And the characters don’t miraculously find themselves married after a whirlwind romance. It’s very refreshing to see a story like this. Not only that, but this story is quite well written. Valentine draws you in with her suspenseful and exciting storytelling. Everything is laid out clearly, plainly, and in an excitingly vivid manner. You can’t help but life this story with the characters. Now, I must say that there is very little character development in this novella, but that is part of its brilliance. The characters don’t know each other either. It’s the spur of the moment, unknown risks, and newness of the meeting that brings forth much of the excitement.

The Secrets of Albion Falls by Sass Cadeaux

Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

It is a lie. Rosalba is not what she appears to be.

Rosalba's sinister intention to devour Sophia's soul becomes the focus of her parents.

Unknown to Sophia, destiny calls for her to become the Princess of the skin-walkers. A way of life shared secretly by all who surround her.

The announcement of Sophia's plan to leave Albion Falls brings the crisis to a head, as Sophia must fight for her life against the evil witch who deceived all for many years.

My Review:

When I first started reading this novel I was definitely thinking WTF, but definitely keep reading and everything will make more sense. By about ¼ way through the book I was fully captivated and couldn’t put the book down.

The writing seems a bit forced and choppy at the beginning, rather than fluid and natural as one would expect from a story being written in the first person. Her writing smooths out after the first couple of chapters. It becomes less choppy, more realistic, and has a much better flow. Cadeaux’s descriptions lay out the scene for you perfectly, allowing you to immerse yourself in the storyline. It is also a well put together story. Cadeaux has a strong plot line that leads you through with suspense, emotion, and excitement.

The characters in this novel are very well developed. You get to know them for who they are and where they came from. You can also understand their actions and reactions based on their upbringing. Cadeaux has these characters nailed for their age range. She portrays teen angst, rebellion, and heartache against a backdrop of family drama in a very realistic manner that is very compatible with her supernatural twist. I also quite enjoy her take on the supernatural. It is definitely far from the norm, yet completely compatible with what we already know about certain species.

This was definitely a very unique read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I cannot wait to continue on this journey with the characters. Could someone hand me a sequel please? Like NOW!!!!!

The Riverbend Trilogy Blog Tour ~*~Guest Post~*~

Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post and see where you can visit Andrea tomorrow!

My Inspiration to Self-Publish

First, let me start with saying that I have discussed with and gained permission from my child to talk about this issue. My novel, Riverbend, which is part one in The Riverbend Trilogy started out as something much different. I began writing it about 2 years ago as a sort of journal entry. The emotions and thoughts that occured during this process quickly turned into fictional characters in my imagination and I had to get it all out onto the paper. The process was so invigorating, so inspiring, I don't quite know how to describe it. Ideas just flowed out of my mind through my hands and onto the paper. Yes, paper. The first 5000+ words of my novel were handwritten in a notebook. I still write in a notebook. Somehow I feel more creative when I do it that way. I like to go outside and sit under the large Tulip Tree in my back yard with my pencil and notebook and just imagine. I almost envision myself as Anne Shirley sitting on the sandy banks of Avonlea with her pen and unbound manuscripts! Riverbend began as a single novel and I thought for a long time it would stay that way. I decided to turn it into a Trilogy after careful thought because I feel it will better impact my readers that way. It was not due to traditional publication rules, as the first book is fairly short. I just felt that at certain places in the novel there needed to be a definitive resolution, and "end" so to speak, so that the reader might better absorb the enormity of the character's realization and plight. Book one was completed in late summer of last year and inquiries were sent out to various literary agents. Needless to say, the rejections started piling in and I began to think that it just was not as good as I thought it was. The book is wonderful, to me, but maybe others didn't see it that way. Although, the majority of the rejections I received were due to not being an established author. Either way, I continued to furiously write, but was losing faith in myself as a writer. During this same year, my 9 year old daughter had been diagnosed with Dyslexia. She had been having an enormous amount of trouble with reading, writing, spelling, and being bullied at school for those difficulties. She ended up transfering schools and receiving the specialized instruction she so desparately needed. She is very smart, testing in the above average range for full scale IQ, so she has experienced much frustration with herself, not understanding why she couldn't achieve what other children were in school. One night, very late for her, about 10:00pm, we were working on homework and studying. This had become a normal rountine for her to be up so late trying to finish homework and staying focused had been so hard that I would allow her large breaks between tasks, to "freshen" her mind. Thankfully, these late nights don't happen anymore! Anyway, on this particular night her frustration was ruling over her, there were many tears and questions like "Why am I so dumb?" "Why can't I remember this?" "Why do I have to have Dyslexia?" Of course, while my heart was breaking for my frustrated child, I comforted her and explained that she absolutely was not "dumb", and that she has gifts that others don't, and that we all have different weaknesses and strengths. My final words to her on the subject were (I can't remember exactly, but something along the lines of...) "You can achieve anything you set your mind to, YOU are in control of your life. It may be hard at times, but you will only fail if you give up." Her response floored me. "Then why don't you publish your book yourself?" Why? Why? I didn't know what to answer! Why don't I? Because I don't believe I can? Because I am lacking the same faith in myself that I am telling you to have? How could I preach to my child to follow her dreams and to always try hard if I was going to give up myself?! And that's what did it. That's when I made the instantaneous decision to self-publish. I no longer cared what any literary agent thought, I even stopped searching in my email hourly for responses! I was going to do this myself and NOBODY could tell me I couldn't, not even me! So, here I am. A brand new, indie, self-published author navigating my way through this whole new world! Everytime I look at my child I feel thankful for her wise advice.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

2012 Book of the Year Award Finalist-Young Adult Fiction, ForeWord Reviews

“Sure to win over YA readers looking for a dangerous, dystopian adventure story” —Kirkus Reviews

“Gripping young adult dystopian novel; compelling conflicts; high stakes; powerful narrative; surprises keep coming; strong writing; page-turner; engaging characters; Readers will be hungry for the sequels.”—BlueInk Review (starred review)

“Thomason’s description of Thera’s totalitarianism will make fans of Brave New World shiver… SCI, her fantasy corporation, has disturbing parallels to actual companies and regimes that claim to do good while harming people… The author deftly appeals to both romance-loving teens as well as those intrigued by young adults fighting the establishment.”—Foreword Clarion Review, 4 stars

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

Full of competing agendas, romantic entanglements, humor, twists and turns, daynight is Megan Thomason’s debut young adult dystopian novel and first in the daynight series.

My Review:

What would you do to save the ones that you love? Would you cross lines that you swore should never be crossed? This is a very, very different and extremely unique concept for a novel. This is the story where conspiracy theory is no longer and theory and right and wrong are so blurred that you no longer know which way is up. This story is simultaneously utterly, disturbingly messed up and completely brilliant.

Thomason has a uniquely welcoming manner of giving background information that remains captivating while filling the reader in. She works lots of allusions into her story, leading the reader to a conclusion, rather than telling them. The author also flips perspective from character to character, showing the same situation from different points of view. It really adds clarity and intensity to the story.

The characters in this novel are unique and varied. They draw you in, making it so that you need to know what happens next. You become completely invested in their lives. You begin to wonder if one of the characters will do what’s expected of him, or the right thing, and which is which. Hell, you fall in love with these characters. One of them Google’s relationships. It’s absolutely priceless. She also works a love triangle (or is it a square? Actually, maybe a pentagon…) into the story. I found myself hoping and rooting against hope for the most unlikely pair.

This is one of those stories where you feel for the characters so strongly that you want to help them out. You want to jump in the story and live it out with them. The characters are backed up by a very solid storyline that leaves you with a feeling of completion yet needing to continue on with the characters on the rest of their journey.
