“You are all here because we share common ancestors,” Nadia continued. “You are all descendants of the great Huntresses of old, the Daughters of Seraphina, the mortal enemies of the Sons of Arcturus, the Elder leaders of the vampire factions, with whom we share an uneasy peace. You, my future Hunters, will maintain the balance between our Society and the vampire’s Syndicate. That is the duty you are charged with from this day forth. It will be your job to eliminate any vampire threat to both yourselves and to the humans that you live to protect! Serve honorably in our founding mother’s name. For Lady Seraphina!”
“For Lady Seraphina,” Shane and the other children chorused.
“As you begin your training within these walls, remember the cause you serve. Know that the trials you will endure will not be in vain. You are about to undertake a difficult journey, but do not fear what lies ahead. Look around you, children. The faces you see in this room, memorize them. The people you see beside you will be your closest allies. Two or three of them may even be part of your squad. One day, you will have to trust these people with your lives.”
Shane turned his head from side to side, now making an effort to study the other faces in the room. His green eyes locked with a pair of wide-eyed chocolate colored ones, evenly-set in the olive-skinned face of a pretty girl with dark brown hair who could be no older than he was. She looked confused, perhaps even a little scared, as she met his gaze. Hoping to comfort her, he smiled reassuringly, only to have her look away as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
Oh well. I tried, he thought as he redirected his attention to his mother just in time to be dismissed. The others all began to move, heading for the doors on either side of the walls. No doubt they branched off into a maze of corridors and chambers that one could easily find themselves lost in for hours before anyone showed up to help them.
Following their lead, Shane filed out of the room with the other new initiates, vaguely aware of where he was going. His mind was far too busy entertaining other thoughts, like that girl, for instance. Did she only just find out the truth of her own lineage tonight? Had she been living a completely normal life until her parents dropped her off at this strange place, gathered in a room full of twelve-year old kids? Was she afraid of knowing that vampires, the stuff of nightmares, were actually real and it would be her job one day to have to put them down?
He sighed.
Welcome to the Society, indeed.
My Review:
I was so wrapped up in this story I felt like I’d been there right alongside the story. I fell in love with this world and the characters. This is the perfect lead in to the series. I definitely can’t wait for more & to see what comes next!
