Synopsis from Goodreads:
Amanda has had dreams her entire life, dreams that oddly enough became reality. It took her years to realize that her dreams were visions and that her future holds more for her than she could have ever imagined. At her high school graduation, she has a vision of her death. Amanda becomes very cautious and paranoid, until her second year in college when she meets Dominic, a mysterious student who will bring her life more meaning. Little does she know, Dominic is a Devlock, one of the creatures who will eventually kill her. Throughout her and Dominic's on and off again relationship, Amanda not only has to deal with the fact that she will die within the next few years, but that it is Dominic and his kind that inevitably will kill her. Can their love pull them through the brutal battles that lie ahead, or will it be the unavoidable destroyer?
This story had me hooked right from the very beginning. I was always trying to guess what would happen next and how it all would end. There were times where I really wondered if good or evil would triumph. Ochart’s way of telling stories is quite unique and I definitely enjoyed the different routes that the story took. There was nothing stereotypical about this book.
There was not a huge amount of description throughout this book. Each of the scenes was well laid out, but there were very few scenes that I could easily picture. Also, the characters, although well suited to their tasks, had very little back-story to go with them. You didn’t get to know them below the surface. Some of the characters just appeared out of nowhere and then played their roles.
This story does jump between the 1st person and 3rd person quite a few times. It was a bit off-putting and broke the flow of the story. Also, most of the story was building up to the main action, then it just ended. But then it didn’t end, because the last paragraph is a lead in to the sequel. I was quite enjoying the book up until this point.
I absolutely loved the story in this novel. It was very interesting and different. There are so many ways that I wanted to love the novel as a whole, but based on the layout and lack of detail it was difficult. I am intrigued to see what the sequel brings and to see the evolution in the author’s writing.
